When this album was recorded in February of 1961, it had been more than year since the Portrait in Jazz was issued, the disc that won the critics over. By the time of this issue, Evans had released four albums in six years, a pace unheard of during that time. Most musicians were issuing two, three, and even four records a year during the same era. Many speculate on Evans’ personal problems at the time, but the truth of the matter lies in the recordings themselves, and Explorations proves that the artist was worth waiting for no matter what else was going on out there. Evans, with Paul Motian and Scott LaFaro, was onto something as a trio, exploring the undersides of melodic and rhythmic constructions that had never been considered by most. For one thing, Evans resurrects a number of tunes that had been considered hopelessly played out, and literally reinvents them — “How Deep Is the Ocean” and “Sweet and Lovely.” His harmonic richness that extends the melodic and color palette of these numbers literally revived them from obscurity and brought them back into the canon. He also introduced “Haunted Heart” into the jazz repertoire, with a wonderfully impressionistic melodic structure, offered space, and depth by the understatement of Motian and extension by LaFaro’s canny use of intervals. Also noteworthy is Miles Davis’ “Nardis,” which Evans first played on a Cannonball Adderley set a couple of years before. The rhythmic workout by the Motian and LaFaro places Evans’ own playing in a new context, with shorter lines, chopping up the meter, and a series of arpeggios that open the ground for revelatory solo in counterpoint by LaFaro. Explorations is an extraordinary example of the reach and breadth of this trio at its peak.

Considered a pivotal album in jazz, this 1960 release from pianist Bill Evans marked the debut of his classic but short-lived trio, bassist Scott LaFaro and drummer Paul Motian. Tragically, LaFaro would die in a car accident less than two years after Portrait In Jazz was recorded, plunging Evans into a deep depression that kept him away from music entirely for many months.

Bill Evans refused producer Orrin Keepnews’ invitation to record a follow up album to his 1956 debut “New Jazz Conceptions” for over two years, stating that he had nothing new to say. He joined the Miles Davis quintet, participating in “Kind Of Blue”, and took his time to plan his re-emergence as a leader in his own right. “Everyone Digs Bill Evans” marked that return in 1958 but it was “Portrait In Jazz”, released a year later, that claimed his place at the forefront of jazz.

It is the first recording made by the now legendary trio of Bill Evans (piano), Scott LaFaro (bass) and Paul Motian (drums). The disc features two versions of “Blue In Green” developed for “Kind Of Blue” and it is revealing to note how the trio makes its own statement of the modal masterpiece crafted spontaneously by Miles Davis and Bill Evans in the original session. As Miles Davis noted: “Bill had this quiet fire that I loved on piano. The way he approached it, the sound he got was like crystal notes or sparkling water cascading down some clear waterfall.” And this is true again in the versions of “Blue In Green” here; time stands suspended, a profound, harmonic peace has settled, now the more remarkable in the paired down shape of the trio.

Bill Evans’ chord voicings, adapted from Debussy and the impressionist composers, leave space that Scott LaFaro expertly and expressively fills. Bill Evans’ own “Peri’s Scope”and the Cole Porter standard “What Is This Thing Called Love” are stand out tracks from this point of view. Paul Motian’s drumming is nicely in balance throughout. Overall, this is an almost perfect jazz trio album.

The trio had just two years together, peaking at the Village Vanguard sessions in 1961.

Weeks later, Scott LaFaro had been killed in a car crash, setting back Bill Evans’ career and his music as much as his developing narcotic addiction.

The second album by the original Bill Evans group was recorded after the pianist, bassist Scott LaFaro, and drummer Paul Motian had spent a year working together and honing the telepathy that established a new standard for trio interaction. Featuring intimate readings of several standards, plus three compositions from the jazz world that became synonymous with the trio’s sounds, and with ample space for LaFaro’s virtuosity to shine, the album was cited by Evans years later as among his own favorite recordings. With an excellent performance of “The Boy Next Door” (omitted from the original release for lack of space) and an alternate take of “Beautiful Love,” this edition of Explorations contains all of the music preserved by one of jazz’s seminal bands on its final visit to a recording studio, plus two previously released alternate takes.

Undercurrent is a 1962 album by jazz pianist Bill Evans and jazz guitarist Jim Hall. The two men collaborated again in 1966 on the album Intermodulation.

The front cover image for Undercurrent is Toni Frissell’s photograph “Weeki Wachee Spring, Florida”. The album was originally released on United Artists, then reissued by Solid State in 1968. Later, the album was reissued on the Blue Note label; both Blue Note and United Artists Records have been part of the same catalog for many decades. The original LP and the first CD reissue featured a cropped, blue-tinted version, overlaid with the title and the Blue Note logo in white; but for the most recent (24-bit remastered) CD reissue, the image has been restored to its original black-and-white coloration and size, without lettering.

The Cologne Stadtgarten venue was crammed that mid-February eve in 2011. A very special concert was scheduled for the night – the American saxophonist Bill Evans was in town to perform with the WDR Big Band.

The crowd’s anticipation of a sublime live concert made the air crackle with excitement. The temperature was rising quickly and the vibe was getting better and better. Evans has always loved that sort of setting. The atmosphere created by the audience combined with the musicians being incredibly focused on what is about to unfold, it creates the perfect atmosphere that enables him to deliver a top performance on stage, performing on both tenor and soprano saxophone.

Bill Evans’ enormous discography is so big that some of his albums fall too quickly into the oblivion. Published in 1974 by the German label MPS, Symbiosis is one of his overlooked albums for you to rediscover without delay! Recorded in the CBS studio on the 30th road of New York on the 11th, 12th and 14th of February 1974, he is reminiscent of the pianists interest for classical and Third Stream music, this current that oozed out the brain of Gunther Schuller synthesizing classical western music and jazz. Composed by Claus Ogerman who Evans had hired in 1965 for his album Bill Evans Trio With Symphony Orchestra, this concert work for the jazz trio and symphony orchestra mixes both written and improvised passages. We find both tonal and serial writing throughout this recording, giving a result that would make Glenn Gould go on to say, in one of his radio emissions, that Symbiosis is a “remarkable and marvelous” work. Gould would later add that Ogerman has an “astonishing harmonic inventiveness” but concerning Bill Evans, there are “too many contradictions between the improvised parts, or supposedly improvised, from someone as gifted as Bill Evans and the very sophisticated well-structured scaffolding implemented by Ogerman”. Surrounded by his disciples Eddie Gomez on the double bass and Marty Morell on the drums, Bill Evans is far from being as uninspired as his fellow Canadian. His singular approach, out of this world even, surely baffled more than a few people in the past. But, with the help of time, we are still amazed by the beauty and the intelligence of the changes of rhythms and colours. And by the work itself.
