Fresh Cream represents so many different firsts, it’s difficult to keep count. Cream, of course, was the first supergroup, but their first album not only gave birth to the power trio, it also was instrumental in the birth of heavy metal and the birth of jam rock. That’s a lot of weight for one record and, like a lot of pioneering records, Fresh Cream doesn’t seem quite as mighty as what would come later, both from the group and its acolytes. In retrospect, the moments on the LP that are a bit unformed — in particular, the halting waltz of “Dreaming” never achieves the sweet ethereal atmosphere it aspires to — stand out more than the innovations, which have been so thoroughly assimilated into the vocabulary of rock & roll, but Fresh Cream was a remarkable shift forward in rock upon its 1966 release and it remains quite potent. Certainly at this early stage the trio was still grounded heavily in blues, only fitting given guitarist Eric Clapton’s stint in John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, which is where he first played with bassist Jack Bruce, but Cream never had the purist bent of Mayall, and not just because they dabbled heavily in psychedelia. The rhythm section of Bruce and Ginger Baker had a distinct jazzy bent to their beat; this isn’t hard and pure, it’s spongy and elastic, giving the musicians plenty of room to roam. This fluidity is most apparent on the blues covers that take up nearly half the record, especially on “Spoonful,” where the swirling instrumental interplay, echo, fuzz tones, and overwhelming volume constitute true psychedelic music, and also points strongly toward the guitar worship of heavy metal. Almost all the second side of Fresh Cream is devoted to this, closing with Baker’s showcase “Toad,” but for as hard and restless as this half of the album is, there is some lightness on the first portion of the record where Bruce reveals himself as an inventive psychedelic pop songwriter with the tense, colorful “N.S.U.” and the hook- and harmony-laden “I Feel Free.” Cream shows as much force and mastery on these tighter, poppier tunes as they do on the free-flowing jams, yet they show a clear bias toward the long-form blues numbers, which makes sense: they formed to be able to pursue this freedom, which they do so without restraint. If at times that does make the album indulgent or lopsided, this is nevertheless where Cream was feeling their way forward, creating their heavy psychedelic jazz-blues and, in the process, opening the door to all kinds of serious rock music that may have happened without Fresh Cream, but it just would not have happened in the same fashion as it did with this record as precedent. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

…But Seriously is Phil Collins’ fourth studio full-length album and was released in November 1989. The album featured more organic production, with much more live instrumentation as opposed to the use of drum machines. Four hit singles came from …But Seriously, and the album topped charts worldwide.

Spawning four hit singles, But Seriously topped the charts on both sides of the Atlantic. While pursuing much of the same formula as on No Jacket Required, there was also a move toward more organic production as Collins abandoned some of the drum machines and prominent keyboards in the up-tempo numbers in favor of live instrumentation. The decision was a good one as there’s no doubt that tracks such as “Find a Way to My Heart” and “Hang in Long Enough” have enough bite to outlast his more dated sounding mid-80s material. As usual, there are a bit too many generic ballads here, but when Collins moves out of his formula as on the dramatic gospel-influenced “I Wish it Would Rain Down,” featuring Eric Clapton, the results are staggering.

Pete Townshend, Ronnie Lane – Rough Mix (1977/2016) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 41:33 minutes | 934 MB | Genre: Rock

„Rough Mix“ is one of the most relaxed albums of Pete Townshend’s solo career. With this release, the Who leader leaves the thundering avalanche of his band to create a rustic pub band atmosphere. It’s a damned notable pub band to be sure (with guest performances from Charlie Watts, Eric Clapton, and Ian Stewart, to name a few) and one can only surmise how much the late (and former Small Faces member) Ronnie Lane is responsible for the offhand charm.
On „Rough Mix“, ukelele, dobro, and accordion outweigh the Les Pauls and Marshall stacks that usually attend Townshend’s music. The album’s best tunes (some of which were written and are sung by Lane himself) rely on warm, homespun invitations rather than riffs played at eardrum-shattering volume. With tunes that are by turn bucolically wistful (‘Annie’), sweeping and majestic (‘Street in the City’), and playfully grandiose (‘Misunderstood’), „Rough Mix“ is delightfully out of place in Townshend’s catalogue.

Roadside Preaching sees Pete Alderton collaborating with musicians he met while touring Germany’s blues bars – true originals, to whom the blues is not just a musical style, but a way of life. It has made Roadside Preaching, mastered by Hans-Jörg Mauksch at Pauler Acoustics, his most authentic and intense album so far. An essential part of its appeal stems from the tightness of his backing band, which has cut its teeth through an endless string of gigs, performing both at renowned jazz spaces and small pubs. Eric Clapton once said: “From time to time, you need to revisit the blues to recharge”. Pete Alderton has never left its side.

Fans – including showbiz pals – have been paying tribute to Sheffield music legend Frank White.

Fellow Sheffield star Jon McClure, frontman of Reverend and The Makers, described him as ‘Sheffield music royalty’, while famed city music producer Alan Smyth, who worked with Frank and other local greats, including Arctic Monkeys, said he was ‘a legend and a massive inspiration for many’.

In the 1960s, Frank toured Europe with another local hero, The Crying Game pop star Dave Berry and the Cruisers. He played with Carl Perkins, Albert Lee and The Crickets.

It was widely reported that the talented guitarist and singer was headhunted by The Rolling Stones after the departure of Mick Taylor, while his Sheffield mate Joe Cocker also wanted him for The Grease Band.

Frank, uncle of city recording star Richard Hawley, is regarded as a musician who could have matched the careers of Eric Clapton and Keith Richards, if he had wished, but he put aside the chance of global fame and fortune in favour of family and faith.

He treated fans to his talent every Friday for 20 years at Pheasant Inn, at Sheffield Lane Top, but stopped performing publicly about five years ago after suffering a broken left shoulder.

Another claim to fame was owning the first white twin-neck Gibson guitar to be shipped from the United States in 1964.

GRAMMY Award-winning MCA Nashville country star Vince Gill revealed via NPR his new album Down To My Last Bad Habit is set for release on February 12. Gill wrote/co-wrote, co-produced and is a featured musician on all 12 songs on Down To My Last Bad Habit. The album also includes guest vocals from Little Big Town and Cam.

‘Forty years into this, it’s still as much fun as it s ever been to play music,’ notes Gill. ‘At the end of the day, what I get excited about is doing something I haven’t done before. When I record a song, I feel successful if I’ve accomplished something new.’

Down to My Last Bad Habit marks Gill s first solo album since 2011 s Guitar Slinger. In 2013, The Oklahoma native partnered with famed steel guitarist Paul Franklin on Bakersfield as a tribute to the Bakersfield sound of Buck Owens and Merle Haggard. With 20 GRAMMY Awards to his credit, Gill has emerged as country music s most eloquent and impassioned champion. He is both a world-class guitar picker and a wide-ranging songwriter whose compositions earned him entry into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2005 and the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2007. Gill has produced albums for LeAnn Rimes, Amy Grant as well as Ashley Monroe and has made guest appearances on over 500+ albums including Barbra Streisand, Eric Clapton, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, George Jones and more.

Gill returns this holiday season for a set of shows at Nashville s famed Ryman Auditorium with his wife, Christian contemporary artist, Amy Grant. In February, Gill is set to reunite with Lyle Lovett for a 13-city tour of acoustic shows.

For over 20 years, The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus, a multi-media event staged in late 1968 under a circus tent in a north London TV studio, and meant to be shown on the BBC, lay unedited and unseen reportedly because the band was unhappy with its performance. In 1992 director Michael Lindsay-Hogg began editing it, a process that was finally finished in 1996 before the film and soundtrack were released on both CD and DVD. It has now been re-released with a new 4K Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos DVD/Blu-Ray of the film and a soundtrack expanded to 28 tracks, with a new mix in a 192k/24 bit HD restoration. Often dismissed as a goofy, DayGlo relic that reflected the mushy peace and love currents of the moment, this high resolution reissue shows that a serious reassessment of this oddity is long overdue.

One of a few big names to come to Santiago for Rock in Chile (Bryan Adams, Eric Clapton, and Mick Taylor being the others), most of David Bowie’s setlist from the first evening was broadcast on national television – although with a slightly dodgy mix, and a VHS tape that hadn’t been stored in the best conditions for seventeen years after the show. Good setlist, and you get to see plenty of Bowie being a theatrical and magnetising performer.
