Trio Stadtlmann is a Japanese trio formed and active in Switzerland, featuring the world’s rarest stringed instrument, the baritone. Celebrating their 10th anniversary, the Trio Stadtlmann released their first recorded work with the cooperation of Tokyo Zoshigaya Haiobun-tei, which has been conducting a project to perform Haydn’s complete baritone trio works. It also includes the only quintet in existence that includes two horns! Ryuji Sakamoto, baritone Sonoko Asabuki, viola Shuko Sugama Formed in the fall of 2010 by Ryuji Sakamoto, Sonoko Asabuki, and Shuko Sugama, who had studied ancient instruments at the Musikhochschule Basel, the Vienna style double bass. The name of the ensemble comes from the fact that each member of the ensemble was lent an instrument or a copy of an instrument by the Stadlmann family, which was deeply connected with the Esterházy Palace where Haydn served, by the conservatory when the ensemble was formed. Since then, the group has been performing mainly in Basel, and in January 2015, as part of the 150th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Switzerland, they will tour Japan in cooperation with the Basel Conservatory, performing at 6 venues throughout the country.Since 2016, he has been a resident artist at “Hai-bun-tei” (Hidemi Suzuki, music director) in Honjo-ji Temple, Zoshigaya, Tokyo. As an artist-in-residence, he has been performing the complete baritone trios of J. Haydn’s compositions in the baritone trio performance project “The House of Nikolaus,” which is held twice a year.

The three gamba sonatas were written in the early 1740s. It remains unclear whether Johann Sebastian Bach intended to create a complete cycle (usually made up of six similar works), or whether the individual sonatas simply survived by happenstance and do not in fact form a unit. The assumption that Bach was indeed the composer rests on the fact that the Sonata in G minor (BWV 1029) has survived in Bach’s autograph. The two remaining sonatas, however, exist only as posthumous copies made in the circle of Bach’s sons of a manuscript that must have resembled the sonata penned by Bach himself. Bach’s manuscript can be dated to the beginning of the last decade of the composer’s life based on certain traits particular to his handwriting at that time.

Only few testimonies provide us any details about this now little known but once esteemed composer. Born in Coburg, 1735, Anton Schweitzer died 1787 in Gotha, where he had settled following the Weimar palace fire in 1774. Regrettably, only relatively few manuscripts have survived. Some of the works recorded here (which comprise almost the entire existing church music) have been preserved in several copies, which were recently found in different archives in Thuringia. This recording shows us a colorful virtuoso music of an unjustly forgotten composer.

The album was composed as a soundtrack to accompany the illustrated short story and is an expanded step in the multidisciplinary aspect of the Lovecraft Sextet project. A Swiss rockabilly combo, the Hillbilly Moon Explosion exists in a middle ground between the traditionalism of many rockabilly revival bands and the rougher, spookier sound of psychobilly. Founded by vocalist and rhythm guitarist Emanuela Hutter and bassist and vocalist Oliver Baroni, their music has more than its share of retro twang with Hutter’s polished, enigmatic singing blending with the sometimes raucous, sometimes moody guitar lines, and they add dashes of punk, lounge pop, country, and even ska to season the evocative mix. The band staked out their trademark sound on 2002’s Introducing the Hillbilly Moon Explosion, they fully hit their creative stride on 2011’s Buy Beg or Steal, and they collaborated with psychobilly veteran Mark “Sparky” Phillips for 2019’s The Sparky Sessions. The Hillbilly Moon Explosion was formed in 1998 in Zurich, Switzerland. The group was formed by two musicians in the Zurich rockabilly community; Oliver Baroni had recently left his band the Hillbilly Headhunters, while Emanuela Hutter previously sang with MD Moon. With the addition of Pat Matteo on guitar and Aad Hollander on drums, the first edition of the Hillbilly Moon Explosion was complete. By the time the group cut their debut album, 2002’s Introducing the Hillbilly Moon Explosion, Pat Matteo was out of the group and Patrick Geser had become their guitarist. With 2004’s Bourgeois Baby, Aad Hollander had left the lineup and Luke Weyermann signed on as their drummer. American rockabilly picker Eddie Angel (best known for his work with Los Straitjackets) handled lead guitar chores on 2009’s All Grown Up, but on 2011’s Buy Beg or Steal, the band introduced a long-term guitarist in Duncan James, formerly of the British pop group Blue. One of the tracks on Buy Beg or Steal, “My Love For Evermore,” saw Emanuela Hutter dueting with Mark “Sparky” Phillips, lead singer with British psychobilly mainstays Demented Are Go, and he would go on to collaborate with the group again in the future. Phillips popped up on the song “Northern Crown” on 2013’s Damn Right Honey! (Songs of Love & Loss, Life & Death), and in 2015, they did an album length collaboration with French actress and vocalist Arielle Dombasle titled French Kiss. 2016 saw the release of With Monsters and Gods (featuring another guest spot from Phillips, on a cover of the Johnny Cash/June Carter Cash duet “Jackson”), and by this point, Luke Weyermann was no longer part of the band, and Sylvain Petite was behind the drums. 2019’s The Sparky Sessions paired Mark “Sparky” Phillips with the Hillbilly Moon Explosion for a full album. – Mark Deming
