Since that last John Klein share featured the orchestra and chorus of Leo Addeo, I figured I’d throw up another record from Mr. Addeo. This one isn’t nearly so peppy as that one, but it does have a nice cover.

Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Igloo

After “Looking Forward” (2019), pianist Eve Beuvens and Swedish saxophonist Mikael Godée sign a new opus with their Swedish team. “Ingen Fara” evokes a flight of migratory birds that fly free yet united, like the music of this Nordic quartet: airy, poetic and delicate.

After “MEQ” (Spookhuis, 2013) and “Looking Forward”, their second album released in 2019 (Igloo), the quartet toured extensively on the European scene. In the interim, the pianist also released a solo album (Inner Geography, Igloo, 2021) and is currently developing a trio project with singer Lynn Cassiers and bassist Lennart Heyndels.

Faithful to the Igloo label since 2009 (first album as a trio, “Noordzee”), she and her Swedish acolytes Mikael Godée, Magnus Bergström and Johan Birgenius completed this third opus entitled “Ingen Fara”.

Think again if you thought The Temptations in a Mellow Mood (an album of standards) pioneered this concept by a ’60s soul group; this smooth set preceded the Temptations’ album by a couple of years and probably inspired the Motown classic. The dancing, exciting Vibrations shocked their fans with this early-’60s release of standards sung in modern but soulful harmony. It was before its time and wasn’t really appreciated until years later when it was out of print. “Misty” charted, but the California natives also serve up excellent renditions of “The Days of Wine and Roses,” “I Wish You Love,” “What Kind of Fool Am I,” and “Gina.” The Vibrations’ Okeh albums are excellent but rare, each deserves reissuing on CD, and why this hasn’t happened is a mystery.

Winner of the ARD International Competition in 2013, Trio Karenine has been highly praised for their musical integrity and technical prowess. For this recording, they perform Schumann’s Piano Trios Nos.1 & 2. Written in a two-week period in 1847, Piano Trio No.1 is justly famous and possibly inspired by Mendelssohn’s piano trio in the same key. Composed only a few months later, Piano Trio No.2 has an immense spirit and a beautiful lucidity. Both works are given dazzling performances by this young trio.

In 1961, the Ventures included Bob Bogle (lead guitar), Nokie Edwards (bass guitar), Don Wilson (rhythm guitar), and Howie Johnson (drums). Their fourth album, “The Colorful Ventures,” was released in October of 1961. It was their first album with a theme, with every song having a color in the title. Although it didn’t generate a hit single, it’s a solid album from start to finish. Highlights include their versions of “Blue Moon,” “Blue Skies,” “Greenfields,” and the rocking “Red Top.” Original instrumentals include “Yellow Jacket” (written by Bob Bogle, Nokie Edwards, and Don Wilson), and “Orange Fire” (written by Nokie Edwards). The closing song, “Silver City,” features brass, and could have been used as the theme song for a Western. What makes this album even more impressive is the fact that it was their fourth album released in less than 12 months, after “Walk, Don’t Run” (1960), “The Ventures” (1961), and “Another Smash!!!” (1961).

This refreshing live performance by the Trio Heinz Herbert on the main stage at the Willisau Jazz Festival was recorded in September 2016 and finds the band confronting the audience with a kind of contemporary music that might not seem like jazz at first, but is infused with the same freedom and spirit of adventure. Many of the more traditional festival attendees were very excited about the young trio’s sound, which incorporates synthesizers, samples and effects. The three instrumentalists set out to create wholly individual music with precision and determined playfulness; this concert album provides ample evidence that they realized their goal.

‘Echolocation’ is the astonishing debut album from Mendoza Hoff Revels, a formidable new unit led by Ava Mendoza & Devin Hoff and featuring James Brandon Lewis & Ches Smith.

While Mendoza and Hoff have floated around each other’s musical orbits for decades, and have been friends for some time, this is their first work together on record. It is an electric & holy harmonic fusion of highly estimable musical forces; wholly rendered. The original impetus of this group was Mendoza’s, based on the love she and Hoff shared for aggressive and polyglot electric avant-garde ensembles – artists like mid-80’s Black Flag (w/ Roessler & Stevenson) and Ornette Coleman’s Prime Time bands revolutionized the way they heard music. As stated in their liner notes, “we shared the writing of these pieces, though without the sizable stamps of both James and Ches, they would sound nothing like they do here.”

Now is the third album released by The Tubes. It was produced by John Anthony. Fed up with constant meddling from Bud Scoppa and Don Wood under the direction of Bill Spooner including surreptitiously remixing a track when Anthony was not at the studio, Anthony was advised to leave the project by Jerry Moss. The head of A&M A&R Kip Cohen said that they took advantage of Anthony and believed that they overran the budget to increase their union fees. Bill Spooner took over and completed the project with the help of the engineer Wood and Scoppa.

“Tubby Hayes is undoubtedly one of the most important, influential and ground-breaking UK jazz musicians of all time. During the ‘50s and early ‘60s, Hayes had stood apart from many of his UK-based contemporaries, displaying a self-confidence and virtuoso musical delivery that placed him neck-and-neck with many of the leading American jazzmen of the day. He worked with the likes of Quincy Jones, Ella Fitzgerald, Charles Mingus and Duke Ellington and his many fans included Miles Davis, Cannonball Adderley and Sonny Rollins. He had his own primetime TV show and was the face of UK jazz.

The third proper album from Anthony Child (Surgeon) and Daniel Bean’s acclaimed drone project, ‘All Skies Have Sounded’ is another voyage into esoteric synth-led ambience. Think cosmic new age business, but with teeth – the creeping dread of Cluster and early Tangerine Dream but tangled with Black To Comm’s surrealist oddness.

The Trammps had a few modest hits on Buddah: “Zing Went the Strings of My Heart,” which featured Earl Young’s seasoned bass voice on lead; “Penquin at the Big Apple”; and a disco version of the Dominoes’ erotic “Sixty Minute Man.”When their contract ended, Young, Ron Baker, and Norman Harris left to form Golden Fleece Records, the Trammps’ new home. After a few singles on Golden Fleece, which were not as good as the stuff here, Buddah brought in hired gun, disco mix master Tom Moulton to redo the Trammps’ singles and unreleased songs that resulted in The Legendary Zing Album. The best of the rest include “Hold Back the Night,” “Scrub Board” (an instrumental), and “Pray All You Sinners.” ~ Andrew Hamilton

Jazz King Records presents a retrospective collection of the great Tommy Dorsey And His Orchestra with Last Moments of Greatness. Dorsey formed his orchestra in 1935 and disbanded a first time in 1946. By late 1946, the band business was indeed having problems. In December 1946, some members of the band (including Tommy Dorsey) were calling it quits. However, less than two years later, he formed an orchestra with exactly the same name (Tommy Dorsey and his orchestra), but with different members.

Dorsey’s orchestra was known primarily for its renderings of ballads at dance tempos, frequently with singers such as Jack Leonard and Frank Sinatra.
