For Volker Bertelmann, aka Hauschka, music is not solely about its sound, but also a means to facilitate the exchange of ideas and foster meaningful interactions between individuals, revealing his fascination with human connection and engagement. Despite being known for his distinctive prepared piano sound, the Academy Award-winning composer intentionally named his 15th solo studio album Philamthropy to express his compassion and openness. The album’s song titles, such as “Diversity,” “Nature,” “Loved Ones,” and “Altruism,” perfectly align with their respective musical compositions. Hauschka’s albums often serve as a platform to provoke dialogue on specific themes, and Philamthropy follows this pattern, aiming to offer optimism and energy in response to the challenges of recent years. The album combines upbeat and pensive pieces, featuring moments of joy, introspection, and peaceful interludes. Overall, Philamthropy showcases Hauschka’s compositional prowess and serves as a gift that sparks reflection and celebration.

Those who have followed Glen Hansard’s career since his Academy Award winning turn in the film Once will have witnessed one artistic arc: the journey of a Dublin busker who cut his teeth on the greats – Dylan, Van Morrison, Leonard Cohen – and followed the path of the troubadour to great effect. But there is another thread running through Hansard’s musicianship; in his decades as lead singer of Irish stalwarts The Frames, rock and folk ambitions coexisted with moments of strangeness, intimacy, and stillness.

Working as an in-demand composer and sound designer – writing music for ballet, film and video games – Bolted was recorded over the last twelve months in Barnes’ home city of Liverpool. His ad hoc studio in a former vehicle and munitions factory (with connections to shadowy guerilla artists The KLF) became a gateway for him to explore, using a combination of hardware, software and tape machines to mould and sculpt a sound world for the album. Across its 11 tracks he dives deeper into his unique sonic vocabulary (including personal samples of Neneh Cherry and the late Lee Scratch Perry) to weave together a set of tracks that sounds equally muscular and bleak, haunting and euphoric. While his previous album – the acclaimed Compassion released in 2017 – saw Barnes toy with widescreen technicolour, the world of Bolted is tightly wound, taught, with a sense of aching urgency like never before. Recommended if you like… Aphex Twin, Björk, Oneohtrix Point Never, Andy Stott, Boards of Canada, Burial, Massive Attack.

Florian Krumpöck, the Austrian pianist, conductor and festival director, has chosen Frédéric Chopin’s famous Piano Ballads Nos. 1-4 as well as his 2nd Piano Sonata for his first recording. And as a result, Krumpöck creates a very unique sound world that shows how strongly Chopin’s melodies are influenced by Italian opera, and especially by bel canto. Nevertheless, the accompanying voices are never neglected: they comment on, counteract, and support the “vocal lines.” Two different pianos were deliberately used: a full, overtone-rich Bösendorfer Imperial for the Prélude and the Ballades, a clearer, more “modern” Bösendorfer 280 for the 2nd Piano Sonata.

The double-album project is the result of a multi-year collaboration between Greek Canadian composer Constantine Caravassilis (Toronto) and American classicist, author, and poet Jeffrey Duban (New York City).

The project’s focus is the poetry of and inspired by the ancient Greek poetess Sappho of Lesbos (7th and 6th centuries BC), in the words of famed British poet Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837-1909), “simply nothing less—as she is certainly nothing more—than the greatest poet who ever was at all.”

For her 10th anniversary with Berlin Classics, the US pianist Claire Huangci presents herself and her label with a weighty recording project, Schubert’s late sonatas D 894, D 958, D 959 and D 960, as well as the Three Piano Pieces D 946 and a selection of songs from Schwanengesang. She accompanies the baritone Thomas E. Bauer in four of the songs, and plays two in an arrangement by Franz Liszt. To be heard in a box with 3 albums under the title META. META stands for the importance of Schubert’s music in Claire Huangci’s personal and musical life. It is Schubert’s compositions, which she has played since her earliest youth, “that show my development, that reflect unconscious emotions”, as she writes in the booklet. Schubert’s music is “the music I would like to take with me to a desert island. Schubert has accompanied me through all times”, especially the late sonatas, which are at the centre of the META box.

Ravel composed his Piano Trio M67 j ust before enlisting voluntarily in the First World War. Inspired by the Basque country and its zortziko dance, the Trio ends with a sombre, almost anguished fourth movement. A mood inspired by the impending war? In his Piano Trio No.2 , op.67 , Shostakovich too is affected by the horrors of war and the death of a close friend. For the first time in the Russian composer’s output, we hear a Jewish theme, a danse macabre echoing the terrible events of the time. Another point in common between the two works is that both include a passacaglia. For the Busch Trio, it was self-evident that these two heart-rending works should be brought together on the same album.

As an instrument from Italy, one that was exotic and evocative of Mediterranean atmospheres, the mandolin was very much in fashion in France until the end of the Century of Enlightenment: a fact also confirmed by many iconographic and musical sources. Pizzicar Galante, an ensemble that stands today as a benchmark for the interpretation of the galant literature for mandolin and continuo, has been acclaimed for the “finesse, creativity and spirit” (Olivier Fourés, Diapason) and “communicative energy” of its performances (Sébastien Llinares, France Musique). For its second recording with Arcana, it offers a compilation of the finest music played during the veritable “golden age” enjoyed by the mandolin in Paris from the 1760s to the Revolution. It is a rare and unexplored repertoire in which the dazzling virtuosity of Anna Schivazappa, a specialist in historical mandolins, dialogues with the beguiling and charismatic voice of Marc Mauillon.

American trombonist Turk Murphy counts as one of the prime movers in the West Coast resurgence of Dixieland jazz in the late 1930’s; Murphy’s brand of traditional jazz remained popular until his death in 1987. Hs band played concerts and festivals throughout the world, was featured along with Dizzy Gillespie, Earl Hines and Ella Fitzgerald at the inauguration of New York’s Louis Armstrong Stadium, and played Carnegie Hall. Recorded live at the ‘73 Heidelberg Jazz Festival, the band’s free-flowing, relaxed two-beat feel combines the best of the New Orleans and Chicago styles. The use of tuba instead of bass leans towards Dixie, as does the intricate ensemble play, yet there are also brilliant solo passages, reminiscent of Chicago jazz of the 1920’s. An infectious rendition of King Oliver’s Dr. Jazz, a vintage version of Jelly Roll Morton’s The Pearls, the swinging, down-home feel on St. James Infirmary, and a rambunctious Panama are among the album’s classic gems. Leon Oakley’s cornet and Pete Clute’s piano stand out throughout. Music geared for traditional jazz lovers and those yearning for some ‘good-time’ music – as the audience’s joyous response to band’s play attests…

Mostly recorded without Brian Jones — who died several months before its release (although he does play on two tracks) and was replaced by Mick Taylor (who also plays on just two songs) — this extends the rock and blues feel of Beggars Banquet into slightly harder-rocking, more demonically sexual territory. The Stones were never as consistent on album as their main rivals, the Beatles, and Let It Bleed suffers from some rather perfunctory tracks, like “Monkey Man” and a countrified remake of the classic “Honky Tonk Woman” (here titled “Country Honk”). Yet some of the songs are among their very best, especially “Gimme Shelter,” with its shimmering guitar lines and apocalyptic lyrics; the harmonica-driven “Midnight Rambler”; the druggy party ambience of the title track; and the stunning “You Can’t Always Get What You Want,” which was The Stones’ “Hey Jude” of sorts, with its epic structure, horns, philosophical lyrics, and swelling choral vocals. “You Got the Silver” (Keith Richards’ first lead vocal) and Robert Johnson’s “Love in Vain,” by contrast, were as close to the roots of acoustic down-home blues as The Stones ever got.
