One of the most original albums of the ’80s, the Innocents’ debut remains a long-lost gem of an album that deserved a wider audience, but was met with hardly any interest at all. Perhaps it was due to the fact that the band were highly original, or maybe vocalist Michael Hurt’s quivering wail was too much for the Top 40. Whatever the reason, The Innocents is a fantastic album filled with quirky musical left turns, wonderful melodic hooks, and inventive songs. “Directly From the Heart” and “Twisted Kiss” are classics that should turn up on just about any new wave compilation that is released (but never will), while “Hold My Hand” was a great ’80s high school makeout song. “Backseat of My Car” is a fun new wave romp. The album as a whole should entice any fan of “new wave” and turn them onto some of the best music created during that period.

Friedrich Lux (1820–95) was one of those musicians who formed the fabric of musical life in nineteenth-century Germany: though he worked away from the major cities, as conductor, teacher, organist, organiser and composer, he was an indispensable element of the communities in which he worked. His large body of organ music, as good as unknown before now, brings together elements of the musical language of Bach, Mendelssohn and Schumann, in works that range from the intimate to the grandiose. This second volume brings some of his many transcriptions to the fore.

Cal Tjader’s Brazilian explorations continue and actually deepen with this release, as he joins forces with a host of progressive young Brazilian musicians, all overseen by producer Airto Moreira. By now, Tjader had figured out how to fit into the blend, doing so by losing himself in the complex mix of Afro-Brazilian rhythms, American funk and ’70s-era electronics, integrating his own identity for the sake of the ensemble. Indeed, Tjader actually appears on marimba on tracks like Joao Donato’s “Amazonas” and his collaboration with Hermeto Pascoal, “Mindoro,” his playing taking on a more brittle edge as a result. Tjader’s Southern Hemisphere cohorts include such emerging luminaries as keyboardist Egberto Gismonti, percussionist Robertinho Silva, the sometimes wild flutist Hermeto Pascoal and on one track, the superb trombonist Raul de Souza. The intricate arrangements are in the hands of George Duke, and so are the funky, occasionally spaced-out keyboard sounds (albeit under the contractually dictated pseudonym “Dawilli Gonga”). – Richard S. Ginell

Blondshell’s self-titled era isn’t over yet. Come October 6th, Sabrina Teitelbaum will issue a digital deluxe edition of her debut full length, which she’s previewed with the new song “Street Rat.”
Originally released in April, Blondshell channeled the indie rock of the 1990s with modern flourishes courtesy of producer Yves Rothman (Yves Tumor, Girlpool). The promising LP featured “Salad,” the best song of 2023 (so far), and earned Teitelbaum the chance to open up for Liz Phair on her upcoming tour.
The deluxe edition expands Blondshell from nine tracks to 14, featuring the new songs “Street Rat,” “Tarmac 2,” and “It Wasn’t Love,” as well as a demo version of “Kiss City” and the previously released standalone single “Cartoon Earthquake.” Today’s melancholy offering features über fuzzed out guitar as the artist realizes she probably has a problem with a substance. “Wouldn’t feed that to a street rat, but it’s around,” she sings bleakly.

Blonde Redhead return with Sit Down for Dinner, their first album in seven years and debut for section1. Its title a nod to the often-sacred communal ritual of sharing a meal with those you love, this immersive, meticulously crafted album appropriately serves an expression of persistent togetherness, a testament to the unique internal logic Blonde Redhead have refined over their three-decade existence.
Understated yet visceral melodies charge each song, creating a foil to lyrics about the inescapable struggles of adulthood: communication breakdown in enduring relationships, wondering which way to turn, holding onto your dreams. Ultimately, Sit Down for Dinner lands as perhaps the strongest record in a catalog that’s already as illustrious as it is varied.

Thus, ‘Goodbye Big Idea’ becomes a musical trip that leaves you slightly off balance.

He is considered one of the outstanding drummers of his generation and is also an absolute exception as a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter: Gregory Hutchinson. In recent decades, he has regularly collaborated with the big names in jazz music, but the New York musician has never released his own solo album. There is already a foretaste in the form of the first single “Straight From The Heart feat. Leona Berlin & Karriem Riggins“ – an atmospherically dense, emotionally charged track in which Hutchinson makes common cause with the highly acclaimed German neo soul singer/producer Leona Berlin and the award-winning hip-hop producer and drummer Karriem Riggins (J Dilla, Common, Robert Glasper) from Detroit, who also drums together with Hutchinson and directed the recordings of the entire album.
