You may not realize it, but at some point, during any day, week, or month, you’ve listened to the music of Trevor Rabin. It might have been on the radio when one of the biggest rock hits of all time, Yes’ “Owner of a Lonely Heart “, was played, or on one of his more than 100 movie or TV soundtracks, or even the theme for NBA basketball on TNT. Now he returns with ’Rio’, his first vocal-led solo album since 1989’s ‘Can’t Look Away’. It is a masterclass of idea exploration combined with unbound musical ability and Rabin’s skills as a storyteller through music are present throughout. It is a record full of surprises, gorgeous melodies, dramatic changes, and incredible musicianship.

Remastered and newly mixed by band members Dan Lacksman and Michel Moers, Telex releases Neurovision. Released in 1980, the album was the follow up to their debut Looking For Saint-Tropez, and includes the track ‘Euro-vision’ which was famously entered into the Eurovision Song Contest, representing Belgium. Moers says he regarded their entry as “very Situationist International, the worm in the apple” and they resolved either to come first or last. They didn’t achieve that goal, but became part of the Eurovision saga.

The Belgian synthpop trio – Marc Moulin (1942- 2008), Lacksman and Michel Moers – launched in Brussels in 1978 and, as one of only a handful of synthpop pioneers at the time, helped bring electronic pop to the mainstream. Telex announced their retirement in 2008, following Moulin’s death, and in 2021 began a new partnership with Mute beginning with the release of This Is Telex.

If ever there was a dream of a girl country singer Susan Raye is it. She’s romantically pretty graciously charming impressively intelligent teriffically talented… and there’s a special way she has about her that draws compliments from everyone…

And right now her fans couldn’t be happier for her. “Willy Jones” (written especially for her by Buck Owens) quickly climbed into the top echelons of the country music charts… “L.A. International Airport” is following close behind… and everybody says it couldn’t have happened to a nicer girl.

But besides the big single record hits and a good sprinkling of evergreen Buck Owens songs (“In The Arms Of Love,” “Happy Times Are Here Again,” “Heartbreak Mountain”… ) this album offers something really special. It marks the debut of Susan Raye songwriter! As the story goes Susan thought she’d like to try her hand at writing a song. Everyone around her in the Buck Owens All-American Show was writing songs as regularly as most of us brush our teeth. So Susan announced that she too was on the verge of being a composer. The announcement got a few laughs… even from Susan herself because she had no idea of how to begin or if the end-product would be worth the effort.

Lee Taylor doesn’t have a big discography or countless videos on YouTube, but what she lacks in online media is reinforced by boisterous vocal chops and spot-on charisma. And yes, she’s got more musical game than most “influencers” out on their showy platforms. Her live album Wild Woman, due out Friday, March 12th exemplifies this vocal force who rings comparisons from Dionne Warwick, Lily Allen, and Joss Stone.

Susan Raye – Wheel of Fortune (1972) [Official Digital Download 24bit/192kHz]

Susan Raye’s country version of “Wheel of Fortune,” a number one hit for Kay Starr in 1952, dispensed with the original’s roulette wheel sound effects and reached the country Top 20 in 1972. That song forms the foundation of the album Wheel of Fortune, which contains mostly new material rather than the raft of covers heard on typical country albums of the period (although, to be fair, that practice was on the wane in the ’70s). Raye was an artist with Buck Owens Enterprises and recorded several hit duets with Owens, and while none are included on the album, he features heavily on it. The recordings were made at Owens’ Bakersfield studio, he wrote (or, in one case, co-wrote) half of the material, and his son, Buddy Alan, contributed the lovely ballad “I’ve Never Had a Dream Come True Before.” In fact, Owens – not Capitol – has retained ownership of Raye’s master tapes through the years. Raye’s roots in rock & roll seemingly made her a strong candidate to become a crossover country singer but, perhaps due to Owens’ influence, she cleaved to an identifiably country sound that is heard most pronouncedly on the banjo accompaniment of “Hide and Watch Me Go.”

Susan Raye is hard to talk about… just like it’s hard to talk about the smell of fall or the sound of love or any other private, intangible, unutterable feelings.

Still there are a few things we’d like to say: that Susan is a beautiful lady: that she is warm, kind, talented, honest, feeling: that there are ten Susan Raye performances here: that each one is a fitting successor to “L.A. International Airport”: that they were written by the likes of Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, and Freddie Hart: and that for the true Susan Raye fan (and there are lots of you) there is nothing quite like hearing Susan sing a song for the first time.

Just listen to the unrestrained joyousness of “Pitty, Pitty, Patter,” Susan’s latest hit. And the meltingly lovely sensuality of “Within My Loving Arms.” And the heartaching loss and loneliness of “(I’m Goin’) Home.” No wonder she’s become such a phenomenal success on TV and with Buck Owens’ All-American Show.

More than likely, Susan Raye is hard to talk about because she’s so much nicer just to listen to.
