The folk music of the Baltic peoples can be traced back to pagan times whereas the development of their art music did not start until around 100 years ago. Every country has its own founding fathers where music is concerned: the Estonians admire Heino Eller and the Latvians Jazeps Vitols as the founder of their respective national music culture. Arvo Part was one of Eller’s students. The founding figure of Lithuanian art music and art is Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis, who created fugues and sonatas as well as symphonic poems, music for piano, and choral works. This is the ninth and last installment of the SWR Vokalensemble series dedicated to musical portraits of different countries and the last release with its chief conductor Marcus Creed. The SWR Vokalensemble is internationally renowned as one of the best choirs for modern a cappella repertoire, its performances are characterized by exquisite mastership.

As the last completed symphony that Mahler wrote, the Ninth has often been heard by audiences as the composer’s swan song: a nostalgic, moving farewell from a composer conscious of his own mortality. This interpretation is of course easily justifiable, as etched into the musical fabric of the symphony are references to the tragedies that befell the composer in the years before his death. Furthermore, it is wholly plausible that for a man as melodramatic as Mahler, the idea of a symphony that centres around themes of loss and finality would surely have been an appealing prospect.

The Swedish Chamber Choir makes its debut on Chandos with this fascinating programme of works for choir, choir and solo voice, and for choir and violin. The founder and conductor, Simon Phipps, leads the choir in unaccompanied works by Swedish and British composers. Maria Forsström joins them in one of Mahler’s Rückert Lieder, ‘Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen’, in a sixteen-part arrangement by Clytus Gottwald, and in Judith Bingham’s The Drowned Lovers, a stark companion piece to Stanford’s The Blue Bird. The material of the Epic of Gilgamesh is ancient. The first texts in Sumerian date from the early 2nd millennium BC. The text handed down in cuneiform on clay tablets was reconstructed from many tablet fragments and is still not completely known. At the center of the epic’s plot is Gilgamesh, the king of Uruk, who roams the world in search of eternal life. He meets Uta-napischti, who tells him the story of the deluge. Uta-napishti is the Babylonian equivalent of the biblical Noah. The Heidelberg Assyriologist Prof. Dr. Stefan M. Maul translated the mighty epic into German. The phonetically originally sung text and this translation form the basis of Enjott Schneider’s 15-movement oratorio ABUBU.

Sunsleeper is an emo rock band hailing from Salt Lake City, Utah. The band formed in 2015 and spent the first year creating their sound. In March 2016, they teamed up with producer Nathan Hussey (All Get Out) and Andrew Goldring to record their debut EP ‘Stay the Same’. They self-released the EP in July 2016 and spent the next year touring the West / Midwest and growing their following. Sunsleeper spent the fall of 2017 at home writing for their first full length. They teamed up with Producer Nathan Hussey again and spent three weeks in Port Jefferson, New York recording with Mike Watts at Vudu Studios. In 2018, Sunsleeper focused on live shows and touring – ending the year with a tour spanning the Midwest / East Coast supporting All Get Out, Homesafe and Household. After signing a Worldwide record deal with Rude Records, 2019 is set to be an even busier year with the release of their long-awaited full length, a West Coast tour with awakebutstillinbed and Sundressed and more to come!
