This album explores rarely recorded music by John Jenkins (1592-1678) and Matthew Locke (1621/2-1677). These composers are typically associated with consort music, but Lidewij van der Voort and Fred Jacobs delve into their compositions for two instruments on their debut CD as a duo.

Written during England’s tumultuous Commonwealth era, the music featured on this album was intended for private society, providing solace and entertainment amidst the challenges of the time. Locke’s music stands out for its adventurous style compared to Jenkins’ more conventional harmonies, creating delightful contrasts within this album.

They were timeless and they were all stars. Bobby Hutcherson, Harold Land, Curtis Fuller, Cedar Walton, Buster Williams and Billy Higgins got together in the early 1980s to play post-hard-bop jazz in the studio and on the US and European performance circuits. The band recorded three fine albums between 1982 and 1986. At Onkel Po’s Carnegie Hall makes that four. Recorded live at the famously louche Hamburg club, it was taped for broadcast by German radio station NDR. The release kicks off a series of previously unissued albums celebrating Onkel Po’s glory years.

Eva Knardahl Freiwald (10 May 1927 – 3 September 2006) was a Norwegian pianist, with a noted career both as a child prodigy and adult performer.

Her debut with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of 12, in which she played three concertos (those by Johann Sebastian Bach in F minor, Joseph Haydn in D major and Carl Maria von Weber in C major), was received with rave reviews. Knardahl was a student of Mary Barrat Due, who was educated in Italy. Idar Karevold, a music professor in Oslo, said that Knardahl’s Italian style was unique in Norway.

Tim Ray with Terri Lyne Carrington & John Patitucci – Excursions and Adventures (2020) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

For a lot of jazz fans, the interest in this album will lie more with the side players than the leader, and fair enough. Tim Ray is a talented and accomplished pianist, but because much of his career has been spent playing behind pop artists—Lyle Lovett, most notably, but also Aretha Franklin, Bonnie Raitt and Jane Siberry—his name is less likely to ring bells than the names of drummer Teri Lynne Carrington or bassist John Patitucci. And to be honest, listening to Carrington and Patitucci mix it up on tracks like the angular, funky “Messiaen’s Gumbo” is one of this album’s greater pleasures.

Bincombe is “a tiny place, comprising a few cottages, fields, farms and an ancient church nestled against a verdant hillside in sight of the sea. The lush meadows provide an inviting backdrop whilst, on the sightline, the English channel sparkles in the summer sunshine and shimmers mysteriously at night.” (Duncan Honeybourne). Part of the church dates from the twelfth century, with most of the remainder having been constructed in the fifteenth. The single manual organ was built by the London firm of Bevington and Sons in 1873 and supplied at a cost of £105 to the neighbouring parish of Broadwey. It was moved to Bincombe in 1903. (Bincombe is famous for its “bumps”, a cluster of round barrows which are visible from the Weymouth Relief Road.)

In a year where much critical attention focused on rough-edged, dark electronic excursions from the underground, Tim Hecker’s “Virgins” proved a startling and beautifully persuasive anomaly. The album showed the influence of collaborative work with Daniel Lopatin on 2012’s “Instrumental Tourist” in its lucidity of sound quality, with Hecker allowing a previously degraded acoustic presence to take the fore in an album dominated by plaintive pianos, sharp brass, and warm harmoniums.

This is the most important Tim Buckley release since Dream Letter, featuring a singular performance with a jazz-rock lineup that calls to mind Van Morrison’s Astral Weeks. Buckley, father of Jeff Buckley, made his mark with his Southern California folk-rock sound and four-octave vocal range. But this rich weave of accessible, warm, improvisational music reveals Buckley in a light never before captured on tape, including two newly discovered songs (“Blues, Love” and “The Lonely Life”), early drafts of Buckley classics, and a stunning cover of Fred Neil’s “Merry-Go-Round.” Recorded by the Grateful Dead’s legendary soundman Owsley “Bear” Stanley, the infamous LSD chemist, this is one of the treasures of his Sonic Journal archive. Buckley’s performance is incredible and Bear’s thumbprint on the sonics is part of the magic!

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 01:20:02 minutes | 1,70 GB | Genre: Classical
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © TYXart

This is a stupendously good recording of a notoriously troublesome instrument to realistically and authentically capture and project. It positions the listener’s perspective in front of the keyboard, with the higher treble strings emanating from the right speaker, the lower bass strings from the left, and the mid range right down the middle. And if you play it loud enough, you can feel the vibrations from the lowest bass strings rumble through the floorboards. The instrument used in this recording is a 1981 two-manual harpsichord based on 18th century French models, built by Tilman Skowroneck’s father, Martin Skowroneck. If it’s anything like his other instruments, it’s built using bird quill and beryllium copper strings instead of brass. It’s blessed with a full-bodied and resonant sound, far removed from the sonic characteristics of “plinky” and metallic sounding harpsichords.
