“We wanted to play around and improvise”, says Thom Hell, “capture spontaneity and whims, share them via Dropbox to see what inputs and reactions came back from the other two”. Together with Vidar Ersfjord and Jørn Raknes, the three of them collectively known as the group Mr. Mibbler, he has come up with a kind of music that digs for gold in bits and pieces of musical driftwood, elusive thoughts and ideas, and immediate reactions to each other’s ideas. Weeks of sending pieces of music back and forth saw new melodies and harmonies coming together and forming a whole, an album. This is the Long Journey.

What an enormous room is not only the title of the album by TORRES, it is an incantation, a phrase she has had in her head now for several years. In the video for What an enormous room’s debut single “Collect,” Scott finds herself alone in rooms that stretch beyond the frame of the camera. You can observe details of the rooms-the rubble and support beams in one, the lighting in the other-but they neither define their purpose nor explain her presence in them; these are large spaces whose lack of definition invites anxiety and even fear. What does Scott do when cast against that kind of uncertainty? She dances. She throws herself against it. When she sings “look at all the dancing I can do,” it’s an invitation to awe, and there is much here to be awed by. What an enormous room contains wry, Laurie Anderson-esque art rock, Nirvana’s rage, and ABBA’s strut. Rather than fear the unknown, Scott has chosen to fill it with as much of herself as possible, an artist unwilling to be stifled.

This newly formed quintet traces its roots to the center of the Danish jazz scene. Each member has been prominent internationally and now they have joined forces and recorded two albums which will be released soon. Influences are a mix of hard bop and modern jazz driven by the quintet’s powerful rhythm section. The name of the band originates in the fact that most of the Scandinavian nationalities can be found within the quintet. In addition to Riley, RILEY’S L.A. GUNS’ most recent lineup featured Orlando, Florida-based guitarist/vocalist Kurt Frohlich, bassist Kelly Nickels (a member of L.A. GUNS’ “classic” incarnation) and guitarist Scott Griffin, who played bass for L.A. GUNS from 2007 until 2009, and then again from 2011 to 2014.

Hudson is the name of the quartet; it is inspired by the beauty and history of the Hudson River from which Woodstock is a few miles away. Bassist Larry Grenadier is himself a resident of the Hudson Valley. What is more, DeJohnette appeared on 1996 Michael Brecker’s album Tales from the Hudson, which had similar instrumentation—except for Brecker’s saxophone.
