The Romero brothers are classically trained sons of a master guitarist who build an “electrical crescendo” with their music that sometimes transforms the decorum of classical concerts into the explosiveness of a rock concert. Standing ovations are the norm.
Celedonio Romero and his family belong to a generation that, in the years following the Spanish Civil War, fled the cultural desert of the Franco regime, especially in regards to music. Along with the many other expatriates among whom I found myself, we had to open roads distant from Spain, but thanks also to this exile we could carry our art to the world and collaborate in creating an image of Spain that did not consist solely of bullfights and flamenco.

“Hamp’s Boogie Woogie” is a 1944 instrumental written by Milt Buckner and Lionel Hampton and performed by Lionel Hampton and His Orchestra. The song, featuring Earl Bostic on alto sax, hit number one on the Harlem Hit Parade and peaked at number eighteen. The song was number seven on Billboard’s Annual High School Student Survey in 1945.

A narrative unfolds in seven stages which reflects Walter Benjamin’s flight in suggestive images in which dream sequences and reality interweave. Benjamin’s encounters with Hannah Arendt, Bertolt Brecht, Gershom Scholem and Asya Lacis – the woman who tried to persuade him for many years to embrace historical materialism – became the cornerstones of this rhetorical arc. “These stages”, says Ruzicka, “may represent a unique life story in the 20th century, whereby in view of the devastation of that century, it is inevitable that the wounds that are thought to have healed are made to bleed again”.

Kurt Wagner found himself in Minneapolis in the sweltering summer of 2021, in a decommissioned paint factory turned practice space, when everybody was still kind of looking at everybody else as a potential source of disease. He entrusted himself to this piano player, Andrew Broder, and his mad genius of a production partner, Ryan Olson. “Ryan and Andrew, they’re like two sides of my personality,” Wagner says. “And if you put them together as a team, they represent me.” This would be the first time Wagner let somebody else – not to mention somebody else without any sort of a connection to holy, old Nashville – produce a Lambchop record.

Johann Sebastian Bach was certainly familiar with the Pantaleon – a large hammered dulcimer with a wide range and full chromatic scale. Bach’s contemporary Pantaleon Hebenstreit had developed the instrument, through which he gained international renown and became one of the best-paid Dresden court musicians. The instrument enjoyed great popularity in the 18th century and was an important precursor of the fortepiano, its younger brother. Bach may have heard Hebenstreit with his Pantaleon himself, as he knew several court musicians of the Dresden orchestra personally and also performed with some of them. Whilst we cannot know if they had met in reality, our imagination has nonetheless been much exercised. What would Bach have put on his famous colleague’s music stand? Very little music written for the Pantaleon has survived, although the instrument’s use in the court orchestras of Vienna and Dresden suggests that works for the harpsichord and for the violin in particular could have served for arrangements and improvisations. It is hard to imagine that Bach would have objected to a virtuoso like Hebenstreit adapting his violin sonatas for the Pantaleon.

Lingua Ignota is classically trained vocalist Kristin Hayter. This music is sorrowful and almost religiously lamenting past regrets and abhors pleasure it seems. Songs, such as REPENT NOW CONFESS NOW can leave one in a depressed state of mind. Frequently drawing comparisons to Diamanda Galás, Hayter’s vocals range from a delicate soprano to harsh shrieking, and her recordings, including 2019’s Caligula and 2021’s Sinner Get Ready, are ambitious, bracing blends of opera, power electronics, avant-metal, and folk influences. It’s a record born out of a period of turbulence for Hayter, as she stared down the barrel of a burgeoning pandemic, further compounded by the reverberations of a serious spinal injury sustained at a live performance, and its resulting surgery and recuperation. The unsettled foundations echo Hayter’s own Catholic upbringing and subsequent adoption of atheism, and across these nine tracks she creates a metaphorical ecosystem that ruminates on the impact of piety, rebirth, forgiveness, and catharsis. (If I’d scared you enough to lead you away from listening to the Covid-19 Pandemic Variant lament, I am sorry as that was not the intention). I want you to experience that epiphany I do believe she is trying to portray! SINNER GET READY is an uncompromising and often unsettling assessment of religion, but not outright damnation. Instead, an allegorical mirror is assembled using impressive songcraft and informed themes to display the conflict, duality, and divergence often present in the sacrosanct. Despite its theological bearings, this is no self-indulgent enlightenment project. It’s no less urgent, or immediate than previous works, and alongside flexing her multi-hyphenate musical capabilities and assertion as a visual and artistic auteur, Lingua Ignota once again exceeds expectations. This is a terrifyingly real LP that will surely blow your mind. (Not for the feint of mind PG-17 to be sure!) Pax and chillax with this album, thoughts? Luv, Murf
