Eugene Ormandy, (born Nov. 18, 1899, Budapest—died March 12, 1985, Philadelphia), Hungarian-born American conductor who was identified with the Late Romantic and early 20th-century repertoire.
Ormandy graduated from the Budapest Royal Academy, where he studied violin with Jenö Hubay, at age 14. By age 17 he was a professor of violin, undertaking concert tours throughout Central Europe. Lured to New York City by the prospect of a U.S. tour, he instead ended up playing the violin in the orchestra of the Capitol Theatre, accompanying silent films.

The discography of Eugene Ormandy lists the entirety of the discographic recordings in the studio of the conductor Eugene Ormandy.
Born in Hungary in 1899, Ormandy emigrated to the United States in the early 1920s. He made his first discographic recordings as a violinist. Called to conduct orchestras in New York and then in Minneapolis, it is at the head of the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra that Ormandy recorded his first records as conductor in 1934 for the RCA Victor label. Taking over from Leopold Stokowski as musical director of the Philadelphia Orchestra from 1936-1938, in 1943 he signed an exclusive contract with the CBS company. Between 1951 and 1961, following the reciprocal distribution agreement between CBS and Philips, many of Eugene Ormandy’s records were released in Europe under the Philips label. He returned to RCA in 1968 and made his last recordings in the late 1970s at EMI. He retired in 1980 and died in 1985.

Among the 23 German documents included in UNESCO’s “Memory of the World” list, there are but two musical manuscripts: Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 and Johann Sebastian Bach’s Mass in B minor. The second one – an immense work of sacred music – is both exceptional and paradoxical among all those composed by the cantor of Leipzig. Written in the hope of securing the post of the court composer for the king of Poland and Lithuania, Elector of Saxony Augustus III, seems to crown Bach’s body of work, being a summa of his artistic mastery – paradoxically, as it is a Catholic mass, while Bach is one of the greatest composers of Lutheran sacred music.

At the beginning of 2020, one of the last remaining veterans of “classic rock” announced his official departure from the music business: Chris Thompson, who achieved world fame with his distinctive voice and the hits of Manfred Mann’s Earth Band, is retiring from live events. The Brit, who grew up in New Zealand, has set himself the goal of performing again in all the halls, clubs and festivals that have accompanied him over the last few years by his 75th birthday in March 2022.
“Nowadays hardly anyone believes that it is really a band’s last tour. Unfortunately, the term ‘final tour’ has become a marketing tool. In my case that is certainly not the case. The ‘to do list’ that needs to be completed after touring is still too big,” the 73-year-old recently assured at one of his concerts. And his list is long!

Claude Debussy completed his String Quartet in G minor, Op. 10 (L.91), in 1893 when he was 31 years old. It is Debussy’s only string quartet.
Dances for Harp and String Orchestra, in full in the original, Danses pour harpe chromatique avec accompagnement d’orchestre d’instruments à cordes (Dances for chromatic harp with string orchestra accompaniment), is a 1904 work by Claude Debussy. There are two sections: Danse sacrée and Danse profane, and the work is sometimes billed accordingly. It is a two-movement work, of about ten minutes’ duration.

Maurice Ravel completed his String Quartet in F major in early April 1903 at the age of 28. It was premiered in Paris in March the following year. The work follows a four-movement classical structure: the opening movement, in sonata form, presents two themes that occur again later in the work; a playful scherzo second movement is followed by a lyrical slow movement. The finale reintroduces themes from the earlier movements and ends the work vigorously.

Bodacious DF is a 1973 rock album, the only release by the short-lived band of the same name. After leaving Jefferson Airplane in 1971, founder Marty Balin produced an album by the band Grootna in 1972. He then formed the band Bodacious DF with Grootna members Vic Smith and Greg Dewey (also from Country Joe & the Fish), as well as Mark Ryan (from Quicksilver Messenger Service) and Charlie Hickox.
The band broke up shortly after the album was released; Balin joined Jefferson Starship in 1975, and frequently performed the Bodacious songs “The Witcher” and “Driving Me Crazy”. Hickox and Smith collaborated with him on songs for Jefferson Starship’s album Spitfire (1976), and Greg Dewey’s brother Nicholas Dewey wrote a song for Earth (1978).
