Bach’s Sei Sonate a Cembalo certato e Violino solo seem to stand in isolation. In fact, however, they took up numerous suggestions from contemporaries and acted as models for Bach’s sons and pupils. Johannes Pramsohler and Philippe Grisvard expand this ground-breaking cycle with works from Bach’s circle. The result is three profound and virtuosic recitals that offer for the first time an overview of the impact of Bach’s revolutionary sonata model on his immediate successors.

Vagabond Souls brings together a group of friends in a fascinating constellation. Rocking groove context, outstanding melodic (songwriting) quality, at the core a jazz band with all improvisational freedoms – Johannes Ludwig has gathered a dream line-up around him and makes his most mature musical statement yet. Relaxed, to the point with the utmost naturalness, at the same time overflowing with energy and curiosity, everything played with huge ears for the overall organism, not a single note too much. Not only once the initial idea shines through: actually it’s simply a pretty wacky blues album.

Stuck, like all musicians, in the tedium of recent lockdowns, pianist Joe Webb found relief in the cheerful music and uncomplicated teenage movies of the 1950s and 60s. As a kind of memento, before moving on, he recorded these 10 numbers with his quintet, arranging them as the soundtrack to an imaginary 60s pool party film. Mel Tormé, LaVern Baker, Erroll Garner, even Cannonball Adderley – I’m no expert in the genre, and I’m certainly not complaining, but that seems a bit on the classy side to me.

The French instrument maker Sébastien Érard was significantly involved in the modern harp’s development. In 1810, he patented the fully chromatic double-action harp. Thanks to the instrument’s seven pedals and a sophisticated mechanism, it was now possible to change the string lengths and raise each note up to two semitones. This enabled the harpist to play in all keys without retuning the instrument. Composers such as Richard Wagner, Gustav Mahler and Claude Debussy took advantage of these new possibilities and established the harp as an orchestra instrument. In his “Treatise upon Modern Instrumentation and Orchestration” (published in 1844), Hector Berlioz claimed that the harp should never be placed behind the orchestra.

Each member of Trio Tapestry—saxophonist Joe Lovano, pianist Marilyn Crispell, and drummer Carmen Castaldi—has an utterly distinctive voice. Lovano, who has integrated the influence of John Coltrane into his own highly developed sound, is one of the best tenor players in jazz. Crispell, known for her impressive discography and her work with Anthony Braxton among many others, brings a lucid touch and a great sense of space to her instrument. Castaldi is a very unusual drummer—low-volume, spare, free; at times he can recall the late Paul Motian, with whom Lovano also collaborated. (Castaldi and Lovano, both Cleveland natives, have collaborated off and on for decades.)

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/48 kHz | Time – 01:18:51 minutes | 838 MB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Red records
Henderson has been described as «one of the great chord change players of jazz history», and this aspect of his playing, that had its roots in bebop and Sonny Rollins’ approach to improvisation, is very apparent in the repertoire of songs he chose to play that night, each piece with interesting chord changes beginning with Thelonious Monk’s Ask Me Now.
Although Henderson’s style grew out of Rollins’ sense of phrasing, rhythmically Henderson was a lot looser and built on Rollins’s style to create his own approach to improvisation.

Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764) left two very different versions of his tragédie en musique Zoroastre: the first, in 1749, suffered from cabals and the work was withdrawn from the repertory. Rameau gave it a thoroughgoing revision in 1756. At this time, he was at the height of his powers. Melody, harmony, orchestration and choral writing no longer held any secrets for him. Zoroastre brought still further innovation. For the first time, he dispensed with a prologue, and turned the overture into a philosophical ‘program’, the struggle between day and night, between good and evil. The 1749 version is entirely governed by avant-garde ideas; Zoroastre resembles Tamino in Die Zauberflöte, but two generations earlier. This disconcerted some of the audience: Zoroastre was a moral, social and philosophical opera. The 1749 version has never been revived in modern times. Alexis Kossenko takes up the challenge with zest, accompanied by an outstanding cast including Véronique Gens, Jodie Devos, Reinoud Van Mechelen, Mathias Vidal and Tassis Christoyannis.
