Jack Johnson doesn’t do anything forcefully. Gentle, mellow vibes have been his stock in trade since his 2011 debut, Brushfire Fairytales, and that doesn’t change on Meet the Moonlight, his eighth studio album, delivered some 21 years after his first. That’s a long stretch of time to mine the same vein, but the relaxed vibes of Meet the Moonlight are somewhat deceptive; underneath the placid surface, Johnson is taking a few risks. Much of the shift can be attributed to his collaboration with Blake Mills, a guitarist who usually works with such indie rock and Americana acts as Fiona Apple and Alabama Shakes. Mills doesn’t bring the noise or explicitly arty attacks to the laid-back environs of Jack Johnson. Rather, Mills coaxes out the atmosphere, allowing “One Step Ahead” to pulsate to a vibrant, colorful, and relaxed beat, and letting “Costume Party” unfurl with an appealingly languid gait. Other parts of Meet the Moonlight also have readily apparent textures — “3AM Radio” gurgles softly, “Don’t Look Now” almost has an urgency to its chorus — but the Mills approach lets such spare numbers as the closing “Any Wonder” feel full and realized, and not like sketches. These subtle shifts and shadings help make Meet the Moonlight a quietly adventurous album as well as one of Jack Johnson’s best. – Stephen Thomas Erlewine

The idea that you can interpret any sound audible in the environment around you as music isn’t a foreign concept to me. Yet, hearing Joyful Joyful vocalist Cormac Culkeen recall singing along to the drone of their microwave early on in their life during a recent interview gave me pause. What I instinctively understood at that moment, after immersing myself in Joyful Joyful’s exultant debut eponymous album, is that Culkeen is one of those rare artists that have to make music as part of their nature. It’s not a hobby or interest for them; it’s as fundamental to their survival as breathing, eating, and drinking. Culkeen has a kindred spirit in their Joyful Joyful collaborator Dave Grenon. The two attract each other like magnets as if they each somehow complete the other.

Mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato describes EDEN as “an invitation to return to our roots…an overture to contemplate the sheer perfection of the world around us, and to explore whether or not we are connecting as profoundly as we can to the pure essence of our being.” Most of the song texts refer to nature, giving the album a vaguely environmentalist tinge. As a basis for musical exploration, it all seems so general that it would be of little use. Yet this is DiDonato’s genius. She has a real gift for bringing together musical materials in the most unexpected ways, and she does so with special intensity here. The program gets underway with Ives’ The Unanswered Question (DiDonato indicates that the pandemic has filled her above all with questions), and its solo part is sung, not played by a trumpet. How does DiDonato get from there to Biagio Marini and Josef Mysliveček (she gleefully moves from very familiar pieces to ones that are all but unknown)? Listen and learn. There is new music and music from the early 17th century, the Baroque, the Classical period, Wagner, Mahler, and it all seems a single gesture. Part of her method is to set the motor rhythms of the music of earlier eras against the greater flexibility of the later pieces. DiDonato poses great challenges with all this to the small chamber orchestra Il Pomo d’Oro under conductor Maxim Emelyanychev, and they step up to those challenges admirably. The sound from the Teatro Comunale di Lonigo opera house in Italy is ideal. It may be that, after all, DiDonato achieves her lofty goals here; at the very least, this is a vocal-orchestral recital with greater variety than anything else one is likely to hear these days in the genre, and it is good to see that her adventurousness has been rewarded with commercial success.

Whether you love them or hate them, the members of Journey continue to make music that is right in the groove of AOR and mass-appeal playlists. With each album, the San Francisco group gains more momentum and Escape continues that trend. The initial single, “Who’s Crying Now,” is arguably the best thing they’ve done both artistically and commercially. Not only is it one of the classiest love songs in some time, it shows there is more to the band than recycled guitar and keyboard riffs. The overall tone of the album is one of creamy layered textures, poignant writing and well-constructed songs, both rockers and ballads. Steve Perry’s vocals are at their best while Jonathan Cain on keyboards, Ross Valory on bass, Steve Smith on drums and Neal Schon on guitar supply the sock. Best cuts: “Who’s Crying Now,” “Still They Ride,” “Escape,” “Don’t Stop Believin’,” “Stone In Love.”

History has been kind to Escape. As far back as 1988 the readers of Kerrang! voted it AOR’s greatest album, and there it remains, probably in perpetuity. But beyond the confines of genre it has enjoyed an afterlife bathed in nostalgia for the version of American youth that it captured, a time long gone except in the memory.

For many years the Busoni student Selim Palmgren was the most frequently performed Finnish composer after Sibelius. With a portfolio of nearly 400 piano works, his contribution to the prestige of the Nordic repertoire was significant both in scope and creative artistry. This fifth volume of Palmgren’s complete solo piano music explores oriental moods in Exotic March, Op. 46, and includes two of his best-known and most beautiful pieces, Aftonröster, Op. 47 No. 1 (“Evening Whispers”) and the winter magic of Snöflingor, Op. 57 No. 2 (“Snowflakes”). The Sonatine in F major, Op. 93 marked Palmgren’s return to composition after the death of his wife five years earlier and enshrines nostalgia whilst hinting at neo-Classicism.

Josh Rouse wrote the songs for Going Places, while hunkered down in Spain with his family in 2020 and 2021. The inspiration was to have a set of new songs to play in a small club run by a couple of his Spanish bandmates. Josh recorded and produced the songs in his home studio. The result is a collection of songs that feel a bit looser, lean into the guitar a bit more and will sound great in the live setting. It’s also another sonic shift for Josh, who is not afraid of changing things up. What remains consistent is Josh’s ability to write hooks and find grooves that create a sound that is at once familiar, but wholly new. Fans will likely gravitate toward, “Hollow Moon,” which in a just world, would be a massive hit single. It is classic Josh Rouse. But songs like, “Apple of My Eye,” and “She’s In L.A.” definitely show the Spanish influence, which Rouse calls, “A Pan-American sound.”
