It is not uncommon in improvisational music to see the melody primarily as a point of departure for musicians’ solos. But obviously, melodies have a power of their own. Playing a melody, letting it shine in its own right, takes skills. These skills are featured on this album. The quartet, Elisabeth Lid Trøen (saxophone and flute), Dag Arnesen (piano), Ole Marius Sandberg (bass), and Sigurd Steinkopf (drums), consistently demonstrates a number of melodic strategies to highly different results. The compositions establish melodic material, often lyrical, but even more important is how the musicians seamlessly moves from melodies to improvisation and back again, insisting on the melodies to carry the output.

I was twenty years old. I will not let anyone say it’s the best time of life “: this was the first sentence of Aden Arabia, the first book of Paul Nizan, then just graduated from Normal ‘Sup’. Truth at the time, experienced differently by the memory decades later and it surprised me that the musicians of BARTER contradict me today. André Ceccarelli, Alex Ligertwood, Jannick Top, Henri Jacky Giordano and Giraudo were not to have more than twenty when they recorded their first album in 1972 for CY Records in a good period for music that fused rock, blues, R & B with jazz. It was the time of Van Morrison, Jack Bruce of Cream bassist and singer (his voice still shakes me), Stevie Wonder but it was also that of Herbie Hancock and Weather Report bound to what was cataloged as jazz fusion, a time when fairy electricity required his presence. BARTER will never get the notoriety of Magma (had quickly joined Jannick Top) but will have left such good memories to its founding members, and to a certain audience, in 2011 they decided to put the ball in play . Universal will launch a disc with a renovated training, Amaury Filliard (electric guitar) and Julian Olivier Mazzariello (electric piano) joining the three founders that are André Ceccarelli (drums), Jannick Top (electric bass) and Alex Ligertwood (vocal).

First performed in its entirety by Tristan Pfaff in July 2014 as part of the “Festival des Forêts”, the whole of these twelve etudes, composed between 2000 to 2011, constitutes the bulk of Karol Beffa’s works for solo piano. Polyphony, sense of colour, virtuosity, rhythmic swaying: these etudes truly test the performer. This is where Tristan Pfaff excels…

The Simon Below Quartet’s debut album Wailing Wind’s Story, released five years ago, already attracted attention. For example, Thomas Mau praised in WDR3 “the enormous level of their interactions.” In September 2020, Traumton Records released the second work of the award-winning band, which, among other things, received the Grand Prix at the Avignon Jazz Festival. Elements Of Space was recorded at the famous La Buissonne Studio in Pernes les Fontaines in the south of France, where many ECM productions have also been created. The program Tonart of Deutschlandfunk Kultur described it as “an exciting journey that always conveys something uncertain” and concluded: “a brave and successful album.” As part of the quartet’s most recent tour, the FAZ noted in June 2023: “In addition to cunning grooves, catchy motifs and harsh abstractions, the variations of […] breathtaking aggravations and relaxing moments always inspire.“

An Auditory Survey of the Last Days of the Holocene is a fearless work. It focuses on the environment from an auditory perspective, presenting a catalogue of our created world’s sounds by tallying the noises, echoes, reverberations and refrains associated with environmental degradation that leads to climate change. The sequential recordings of traffic, machinery, drilling, fracking and more serve as a backdrop for musical responses and reflections from the piano and percussion instruments, that simultaneously respond, reflect and develop the soundscape journey from one of hostile discord to one of reconciliation and peace. The audience is faced with the sounds of our man-made environment, stripped bare of visual distractions, and taken on a journey of action and possibility. We see this as a way to reach people on a whole new, visceral level. As humans, we get to decide what sounds we take forward with us into a new era and which ones we resolve to leave behind.

In the 1930s, profoundly homesick, Prokofiev was wooed back to Russia—by now the USSR ruled by Stalin—with official promises that he would enjoy not only such privileges as being allowed to tour regularly in the West, but would also play a leading role in rebuilding Soviet music after the ravages of the cultural revolution of the late 1920s. Thus, in 1936, he finally settled in Moscow with his wife and two young sons.

“Koschki” is the fourth and undoubtedly the most complex album by Triozean. One that proves to be demanding at first hearing, but at the same time very accessible. But above all, from the first note to the last bar, it does with brilliance and lightness what the band’s music has always been good at: it creates moods and emotions while listening, creating images and scenes that turn each song into a little acoustic one Make cosmos. Genre boundaries skipped Triozean light-footed. In addition, Olga Nowikova’s singing creates a sensitive touch of Russian poetry and makes “Koschki” something very special. Of course, the beloved Tango blunders are again blurring through the eleven songs, as well as cheeky quotes from the classic flare up, but this time everything sounds a bit easier and at the same time brilliant.

The ensemble Aedes began it’s musical journey with Poulenc, under the impetus of conductor Mathieu Romano. Here, at the head of Les Siècles, Romano returns to the unclassifiable composer to record two of his major works. In the pious contemplation of the Litanies, here performed in the manuscript version, and the orchestral luxuriance of the Stabat Mater, spirituality is expressed through music that is lively, sensitive and even, at times, sensuous. Sculpting out every phrase and note, always at the service of the text, the ensemble and Mathieu Romano confirm their affinity with the composer’s language. As an interlude Mathieu Romano has included a secular piece, O doulx regard, o parler gratieux, by the Renaissance composer Clément Janequin. The boundaries between earthly love and mystical love are thus abolished in favor of pure emotion.

Musettes, hurdy-gurdies, and flutes formed the dream countryside of Rococo-style salons, that of Watteau’s painting Concert Champêtre (1727), when Naudot’s Fantaisies were enjoying their hour of glory. The fashion for “pastoralism” was in full swing, and professional musicians as well as great amateurs vied with each other in “pastoral” concertos where musettes and hurdy-gurdies featured heavily. These instruments were popular originally, garnering great skill to rise to the heights of virtuoso: enough to enchant Louis XV’s courtesans and those close to La Pompadour! Alexis Kossenko reveals these wonderfully outdated gems to us as a bold shepherd.
