In this recording Tina Margareta Nilssen presents three piano works, each with a wide spectrum of expression and intensity. Two of them belong to the standard repertoire, but the third, by Signe Lund, is a practically unknown work, a real gem recorded here for the very first time. The Piano Sonata in E minor is one of Edvard Grieg’s most equilibristic and passionate works. Signe Lund’s beautiful music guides the listener through Norwegian nature, turbulent stormy weather and the French salons. And in Beethoven’s famous “Appassionata” sonata one can hear the struggles and suffering that ultimately led to his creation of a whole new era of music.

Timuçin Şahin has been recognized as one of today’s truly unique voices of contemporary jazz. This is the fifth album of the Feininger Trio: members of the Berlin Philharmonic orchestra.
By combining Brahms’s piano trios with works in the same genre by his younger Viennese successors, we aim to open up new perspectives on Brahms’s output. The two works featured on the current release, Brahms’s Trio Op. 8 and Ernst Krenek’s Trio-Fantasia Op. 63, are essentially different in one particular way. In Brahms, the two string instruments often play together, either in octaves or in sixths, and the two are particularly closely intertwined in the B Major Trio (Op. 8). Krenek, however, handles the violin and the cello quite differenty: they respond to one another as in a question-and-answer game, or they take up their musical partner’s material and carry it a step further.

«Last Two Inches of Sky», released by Punkt Editions on 23 September, is an ambitious and engaging mixture of sonic painting and art-pop; a new high point in Eivind Aarset and Jan Bang’s collective output.
Aarset and Bang have collaborated since the early 1990s in constellations with, among others, Nils Petter Molvær, Bugge Wesseltoft, Sly & Robbie and Jon Hassell. «Snow Catches on her Eyelashes» (2020) was their first recording as a duo, an album that was widely praised, inspiring John Eyles of All About Jazz to write: «Aarset, Bang and company go from strength to strength, as does the Norwegian scene. Onward and upward.»
«Last Two Inches of Sky» further expands this sonic universe – onward and upward. Like its predecessor, the new recording is an amalgam of styles, linked together by Jan Bang’s hallmark sampling technique and Eivind Aarset’s continuous exploration of the guitar. Now, the rhythm section of Audun Erlien (bass) and Anders Engen (drums) are prominent on most tracks, and the arrangements are enhanced by guests like Gianluca Petrella (trombone), Adam Rudolph (percussion), Emanuel Birkeland-Bang (drum programming) and Erik Honoré (samples, lyrics on «Legion»).
Both conceptually and sonically, «Last Two Inches of Sky» is a multi-dimensional experience of dreams within dreams, layers upon layers of colours, light and shade. While the seamlessness and warmth of the duo’s earlier work is still present, the new album is thoroughly grounded in a bass/beat foundation owing much to the Jamaican sound systems of the 1970s, but placed within a decidedly 2020s context.

Edith Piaf, performing her greatest songs 60 years after her passing, accompanied in London by a symphonic orchestra of 60 musicians… What could be considered science fiction has become a reality thanks to renowned musicians, arrangers, and sound engineers. They took on the challenge of creating new orchestrations capable of resonating with today’s ears without compromising the nostalgia of their predecessors. By technically isolating her voice, they have allowed the refrains of yesteryears to prove that they remain as immortal as their interpreter. Edith Piaf’s iconic voice was meticulously extracted from the original masters by a team of sound engineers working at the legendary Abbey Road studio in London. The album, on the other hand, was recorded at the prestigious AIR Studios, also located in London. The orchestra comprises carefully selected sixty musicians, forming the distinguished Legendis Orchestra. These musicians hail from some of the most prestigious English symphonic orchestras, including the London Symphonic Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and BBC Orchestra. As a young composer immersed in the new bourgeois scene in Vienna, Schubert was perfectly positioned to write for the many salons that had opened in the city. The fashionable dances he wrote for them also gave him an avenue for their publication and the selling of scores. These charming gems were not intended for the concert stage but offer a surprising and seemingly spontaneous outpouring of melody and harmonic wit – and even imitations of Tyrolean yodelling. The 12 Écossaises, D. 299 are known to be the first work Schubert composed away from Vienna. Didier Castell-Jacomin employs the 1982 Henle edition based on manuscripts and first editions.
