For Molly Burch, the age 13 was a seminal moment in life that has shaped the path that she is on now. Burch’s fourth album, Daydreamer, explores the feelings and insecurities of this critical stage. Burch has recently relocated to her hometown of Los Angeles, but while she was still residing in Austin, she visited home and did that thing our parents love to have us do: rummage through old boxes to see what shit we can throw away. Upon finding her old diaries from age 13 and younger, Burch was brought to tears. Realizing how cruel she was to herself then, and how she still harbors many of those same self-critiques. It was this visit that forced her to take responsibility for where she was currently at in life, anxiety and body issues and all, and to try to let go of old habits.

Although largely overlooked even in his native France, an avid cult has been building around Jef Gilson’s music. The eclectic Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth fame collects pressings, and journalist Gilles Peterson has praised his recordings. Composer, pianist, sound engineer, producer, label owner, Gilson played bop, modal, free, world music. Jean-Luc Ponty and Michel Portal first found their footing working with Gilson. Nathan Davis, Woody Shaw, Philly Joe Jones, David Murray, hung out, recorded and toured with Gilson. Archie Shepp, Randy Weston, Martial Solal, Steve Lacy made albums in Gilson’s studio. This album’s first four pieces comprise the Suite Pour San Remo. The first section, Ouverture, a jazz waltz, with a sophisticated arrangement, moves to Amadeo and a cutting Dolphyesque alto solo. Adriano is a modal piece with masterful soprano and tenor solos. Arrigo is a relaxed blues with a blistering sax riding free on top. I A.M. is and up-tempo blues in 6/8 with impressive horn solos, 120 À La Noire, a comfortable medium tempo piece with a Mingus feel. Free Call opens with a Latin flavor, while Chromatisme harmonically half-steps up and down the scale; tempo changes and free play dominate. Adventurous and eclectic, the album combines bop, model, free, and a bit of Latin jazz in Gelson’s inimitable orchestral style. Up until now most of his albums have been rare collectors’ items. Good to see his music available to a wider public.

Unico Wilhelm van Wassenaer (1692-1766) is one of the most remarkable personalities in Dutch music history. Until 1980, his music – the six ‘Concerti armonici’ – was well known to every lover of early music, but not his name. These works were universally understood to be by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi or by Carlo Ricciotti, who published them in 1740 but did not compose them. Unico Wilhelm van Wassenaer was well known to Dutch historians as a descendant of the renowned noble Van Wassenaer family, but nobody knew that he was also a composer. Thanks to a lucky find by the Dutch musicologist Albert Dunning in 1980, man and music could be connected with one another. In 1740, a collection of six concertos for strings and basso continuo, was published in The Hague under the title VI Concerti armonici. The Concerti armonici can be associated with musical performances that took place in the 1720s in The Hague.

In growing beyond roots rock and the alt country world, onetime cowpunk Lydia Loveless has found themself. Hard-earned knowledge can make for fertile songwriting material and here, emotional restlessness, self-sabotage and a passionate struggle to get through daily life are inspirations. Loveless has had troubles and desperate as things have been, they want you to know they’re learning. That explosive mix is couched in a more mainstream rock sound, not the twang which the singer/songwriter/guitarist came up in (but largely left behind on their last album, 2020’s Daughter). Flavored with punk overtones, Loveless’s vocals burn with a Springsteenian straight-from-the-heart immediacy. Despite the musical migration, Loveless has retained a country songwriter’s sense of storytelling. They admit, “I wanna get in his head,” in full tilt rocker “Poor Boy” but a wiser course is chosen instead: “I need to clean up my mess and leave the poor boy alone.” “Sex and Money” may be the finest guitar pop tune Loveless has ever written, and the choruses are not played for humor—”All I think about is sex and money/ I don’t care how I get there I just want to be somebody/ All I think about is sex and money/ I don’t care how you get here I just want to be with you honey.” Elsewhere, the volume is dialed down and the rhythms are slowed, particularly in the closing ballad “Summerlong.” Set to piano and violins, Loveless explores a quieter, more considered side of this new maturity: “I’ve already decided that I’ll be alright/ I’m gonna fight with all my might to be kind tonight/ But it’s been so long since I felt alive/ That it feels wrong/ I thought about you all summerlong.” Musically, there’s sturdy backing from the core band of guitarist Todd May, bassist Mark Connor and drummer George Hondroulis throughout. Nothing’s Gonna Stand in My Way Again was recorded outside Nashville by co-producer Sean Sullivan, who accurately captures the rising and falling dynamics of Loveless’s moody songwriting. This pointedly titled collection simultaneously values emotional honesty while embracing a more inclusive portrait of Loveless’s goals and growth as a songwriter.

What better introduction to a new Chopin programme than the Barcarolle op. 60? A pure masterpiece! Debussy recommended its study to his pupil Catherine de Romilly: “You will work on it until you play it well, and for years if necessary!” Written in the summer of 1846, in parallel with the Polonaise-Fantasy op. 61, the work brings together all the subtleties and the most refined colours of Chopin’s universe. After a short, questioning introduction on the dominant, the left hand begins a calm, swinging accompaniment that introduces the shimmering theme in thirds and sixths, which is most bewitching! The utmost flexibility is obviously required here, and it is not until the bridge in A major that the tempo slowly comes to life. But suddenly, a trill on the dominant suspends the flow and, after a succession of breathless, melancholy chords, lands for two bars on an extraordinary iridescence in C# major, like a miracle! Then, after a brief modulation, the theme returns with even more joy, leading to a fiery, shimmering coda that concludes this astonishing piece with radiant luminosity.
