The 3 Sounds – Introducing The 3 Sounds (1958) [Analogue Productions 2011] SACD ISO + Hi-Res FLAC

The 3 Sounds – Introducing The 3 Sounds (1958) [Analogue Productions 2011]
PS3 Rip | SACD ISO | DSD64 2.0 > 1-bit/2.8224 MHz | 67:22 minutes | No Art | 2,71 GB
or FLAC(converted with foobar2000 to tracks) 24bit/88,2 kHz | No Art included | 1,31 GB

What’s remarkable about Introducing the Three Sounds is how the trio’s lightly swinging sound arrived fully intact. From the basis of this album, it sounds as if pianist Gene Harris, bassist Andrew Simpkins, and drummer William Dowdy have been playing together for years. There’s empathetic, nearly intuitive interplay between the three musicians, and Harris’s deft style already sounds mature and entirely distinctive. There’s no question that this music is easy to listen to, but dismissing it because of that would be wrong — there’s genuine style in their light touch and in Harris’ bluesy compositions. The Three Sounds never really deviated from the sound they established on Introducing, but that’s one of the things that is so remarkable — they were fully formed on their very first album. Even if it was a peak, it wasn’t the only peak in their career. They would often match the heights of this album, but this debut remains a shining jewel in their catalog, and the way to become acquainted with their sound.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 55:07 minutes | 663 MB | Genre: Hard Rock
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Frontiers Records s.r.l.

THE END MACHINE are back with their sophomore album, “Phase2,” which follows on the heels of their well-received and successful self-titled debut album released in 2018. The End Machine features former classic lineup Dokken members George Lynch and Jeff Pilson with the awesome singer Robert Mason (Warrant, Lynch Mob) on lead vocals. Classic Dokken drummer Mick Brown handled drums on the first album, but is now retired, so in his place behind the drum kit is none other than his brother Steve Brown.

The new record builds on the great bluesy hard rock music of the debut, but sees the band move more towards the classic Dokken sound and the result is a 2.0 reboot of a killer music machine!

Oscar Peterson Trio – We Get Requests (1965) [Japanese Limited SHM-SACD 2010] SACD ISO + Hi-Res FLAC

Oscar Peterson Trio – We Get Requests (1965) [Japanese Limited SHM-SACD 2010]

Pianist Oscar Peterson has long been such a consistent performer that none of his records are throwaways, but this particular set is weaker than most. Since several of the songs are the type that in the mid-’60s would get requested (such as “People,” “The Girl from Ipanema,” and “The Days of Wine and Roses”), the program would not seem to have much potential, but Peterson mostly uplifts the material (although not much could be done with “People”) and adds a few songs (such as his own “Goodbye, J.D.” and John Lewis’ “D & E”). Overall, this is a reasonably enjoyable Oscar Peterson session, featuring bassist Ray Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen.

During the middle of the 70’s disco era, The O’Jay’s could apparently do no wrong. The soulful Cleveland based trio recorded one hit after another under Gamble & Huff’s direction for Philadelphia International Records. Moving away from the angry bite of their 1972 release “Back Stabbers”, the band followed-up that fantastic album with their 1973 album “Ship Ahoy” heading onward into 1975 with two more LP’s, “Survival” and “Family Reunion”. These two albums were released in quadrophonic back then and now decades later Michael J. Dutton has remastered both albums from the original analogue tapes for his Vocalion label.

The “other” O’Jays album masterpiece, Ship Ahoy combined shattering message tracks and stunning love songs in a fashion matched only by Curtis Mayfield’s finest material. From the album cover showing a slave ship to the memorable title song and incredible “For the Love of Money,” Gamble and Huff addressed every social ill from envy to racism and greed. Eddie Levert’s leads were consistently magnificent, as were the harmonies, production and arrangements. “Put Your Hands Together” and “You Got Your Hooks In Me” would be good album cuts, but on Ship Ahoy they were merely icing on the cake.

When I Have Fears is the debut album from Dublin, Ireland’s The Murder Capital. Produced by Flood (PJ Harvey, New Order, Foals) the album features both singles from the band so far, Feeling Fades and Green and Blue, as well as the first studio recording of breakthrough track More Is Less. An exercise in both darkness and light, When I Have Fears only serves to highlight the early ambition in the band’s sound. From the post-rock build and breakdowns of the two-part Slowdance, to the tender, bruised confessional of On Twisted Ground and industrial pulse of closer Love, Love, Love, there’s a consistent intensity throughout that marks out The Murder Capital as a band arriving fully formed on their debut album.

It’s not often that an artist gets to do a Bowie by consciously carving their personal epitaph into the grooves of their final LP. The Highest in the Land is that rarity of an album, and it could not have been made by a more brilliantly poetic and fearlessly sarcastic writer than Pat Fish, also known as The Jazz Butcher.

‘My hair’s all wrong / My time ain’t long / Fishy go to Heaven, get along, get along,’ he sings, to a ticking-clock beat in ‘Time’, rhyming its title with ‘a one-way ticket to a pit of Council lime’ in just one of many existentially charged moments on a record whose songs were written throughout the last seven years of Fish’s life before his untimely passing in October 2021, aged only 63. ‘Self-knowledge, urgency,’ he wrote as a comment to this song in his private notes to the album’s producer Lee Russell, ‘He’d been around the block. and knew he was on the last lap.”We had closure,” Russell remembers, “We had worked together for three months, and then on the last day I drove him home. And for the first time we hugged and said goodbye, and that was it.’

Recent years have seen a long overdue re-appreciation of The Jazz Butcher catalogue, all the way back to that astonishing 11-album run of the first 13 years of their career, now celebrated and handily compiled in a series of box-sets after decades of shameful neglect.
