The follow-up to 2015’s White Light, which saw the Irish siblings returning to the recording studio after a ten-year absence, Jupiter Calling dials back on the polished folk-pop of its predecessor in favor of a more stripped-down and organic approach, courtesy of producer T-Bone Burnett. Recorded to two-inch tape mostly live, and with minimal overdubs at RAK Studios in London, the 13-track set was described by Caroline Corr as “the most freeing experience we’ve ever had in the studio.” It’s definitely the warmest-sounding Corrs outing to date, and the austere studio setup lends itself to the band’s penchant for pairing pop acumen with Irish balladry, which they do with great aplomb on heartfelt cuts like “Son of Solomon,” “Dear Life,” and “Live Before I Die.” The more architecturally intricate tracks — like the breezy “Bulletproof Love,” ambrosial “Season of Our Love,” and politically charged “SOS” (Song of Syria) — impress as well, with their rich sonic patina and compelling vocal performances that, more often than not, notch the groove between stoic and vulnerable.

The Cookers – Time and Time Again (2014) [Official Digital Download 24bit/44,1kHz]

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 01:01:52 minutes | 720 MB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Motema

For their fourth release, a true Jazz supergroup, The Cookers, have swapped out saxophonist Craig Handy for Donald Harrison, raising the median age of the septet to just under 70. All of that longevity doesn’t mean complacency, however: The 69-year-old pianist George Cables, septuagenarians Eddie Henderson (trumpet), Billy Harper (tenor saxophone), Cecil McBee (bass) and Billy Hart (drums) and the Cookers’ two youngsters, Harrison (54) and trumpeter David Weiss (49) may bring well-defined personal styles to this ongoing project, but there’s nothing retro about them. The Cookers cook, all right, and if anything they’ve become even more assured, skillful and single-minded with each new offering.

Following their critically acclaimed album BELIEVE, The Cookers’ “Time and Time Again” once again reveals this jazz super-group’s consistently profound compositional and improvisational mastery. The sheer power of their mid 60s post-bop spirit, placed in a contemporary setting, continues to thrive and grow in their 7th year as an international act, embarking on their busiest tour season to date.

The Cookers are a young group of oldsters, seven esteemed jazz veterans of some 60s and 70s years of age whose experience and ongoing creativity now offer their latest development. Often a gathering of jazz greats produces nice, somewhat nostalgic but not distinctive recordings; this one is different. These artists are true colleagues who worked with each in other ensembles, and while leaders of their own bands, they can mesh into the composition. Two trumpets, Eddie Henderson and David Weiss, are joined with two saxophones, Donald Harrison on alto and Billy Harper on tenor. Bass, piano, and drums are the forte respectively of George Cables, Cecil McGee, and Billy Hart. All of the tracks are originals, three by Harper, two each by Hart and Cables, and one by McBee. The happy result is pleasurable listening to a great collaboration of postbop, with David Weiss serving as arranger-diplomat-organizer and Billy Harper arranger on three tracks. The extended tracks cover 74 minutes of melody, beat, and horn harmony.

The Connection have found solid footing on “Let It Rock” compared to their earlier 7 inch releases. This outing finds them with a much fuller sound and less amateurish production. “Let It Rock” sounds like it was thought up and recorded in the 60’s. That’s a good thing because this is the kind of record you wanna play from beginning to end, cuddling next to a fire place. There’s plenty of warm, analog goodness for any audiophile out there to appreciate.
Speaking of ‘beginning to end” that’s another unique quality of “Let It Rock”, it’s solid from start to finish. Quite honestly, that’s a really hard thing for any album to accomplish nowadays.
This four-piece have been voted in having the “Coolest Song in the World” a whopping four times in one year by Bruce Springsteen guitarist and Sopranos fan favorite – Steve Van Zandt. I can pretty much end this review because when E-Street legend Zandt says your band- “Gets it”, there’s just very little for me to say.

Family Worship Center is a Portland, Oregon-based Southern rock ‘n’ soul collective*, founded in 2017 by singer/songwriter/keyboardist Andy Krissberg. Following their 2020 Sunday A.M. EP, they just released their debut full-length Kicked Out of the Garden, and it’s everything you hope it would be. You get eight 70s-styled, more-ish sweat-drenched floor fillers, which never sound outdated but always authentic. A delicious treat: a big sound, sumptuous piano melodies, raving horns, celestial harmonies, sometimes with guitars being let loose but at other moments with a gospel feel, everything. Epic.

The Brothers Johnson first earned national recognition as recording artists by singing the sensuously funky mid-tempo number “Is It Love That We’re Missin’,” featured on Quincy Jones’ album Mellow Madness. The dynamic duo maintains that same groove on this, its debut release for A&M Records. The first single was the moderate number “I’ll Be Good to You,” which is soothing like a ballad but inducing like a liquid funk cut. The guitar tandem landed on top of the R&B charts with this gold-selling single. They returned to the Top Five with the bona fide funk jam “Get the Funk out of My Face,” which peaked at number four. Their remake of the Beatles’ classic “Come Together” comes with a soulful twist. Aside from this remake, the Brothers co-wrote every other song on this album, including the untarnished instrumental “Tomorrow,” which later became a number one single for Quincy Jones’ Back on the Block. This album is consistent throughout. – Craig Lytle
