Manuel Cardoso (1566–1650) was one of the most important composers of the golden age of Portuguese polyphony around the turn of the seventeenth century. But history has not been kind to him: the 1755 Lisbon earthquake that ruined the Convento do Carmo, where he spent most of his working life, also resulted in the loss of the only attested image of the composer and a good deal of his music – and much of that which survived has been neglected, his Masses included. This series will shed long-overdue light on these forgotten masterpieces, beginning with two ‘parody’ Masses, so called because they are based on existing music, in this instance two Palestrina motets.

The history of rock has emblazoned so many iconic images into public memory. Much like the image of Jimi Hendrix burning his Stratocaster on stage, and the Beatles’ concert on the roof of Apple Corps HQ in London on January 30th, 1969, is essentially a cult classic. It was a momentous occasion, not only because the Fab Four were all together, but also because it was the last time John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr made a public appearance together. Filmed for Michael Lindsay-Hogg’s documentary Let It Be, which would be released the following year, this concert sees Billy Preston accompany the Beatle’s on the electric piano. Even if disagreements within the band were rife (Harrison had actually left the band just before this concert), this short performance—which was interrupted by the police 40 minutes in—is still an essential (final) chapter of their ten-year saga which was cut too short. There are various pirate copies of this concert on the roof, but the 2022 version is mixed in stereo by Giles Martin, son of the one-and-only George Martin, the producer of the Fab Four. There are three takes of Get Back, two of Don’t Let Me Down and I’ve Got A Feeling, and one of One After 909, Dig a Pony and God Save the Queen. The first take of I’ve Got a Feeling, One After 909 and Dig a Pony would end up on the 1970 album Let It Be. The release of this Rooftop Performance follows the Disney+ broadcast of The Beatles: Get Back, a documentary by Peter Jackson totalling a whopping 7 hours and 45 minutes of run-time. – Marc Zisman

Black Is Beautiful is an album by singer Della Reese, released in 1970 by Avco Embassy Records. Containing soul-inspired pop songs supported by orchestral arrangements, the album rose to number 44 on Billboard’s R&B album chart, staying on the chart for two weeks in April 1970. Recorded in Los Angeles and New York City, the orchestra sessions were conducted by Peter Myers, and the song arrangements were by Myers (six songs) and Bobby Bryant (four songs.) The Brothers Four bear a distinction as one of the longest surviving groups of the late-’50s/early-’60s folk revival and perhaps the longest running “accidental” music act in history 43 years and counting as of 2001, without any break and with two original members still in the fold. If few recognize that distinction, then it’s because the Brothers Four were also part of a largely forgotten chapter in the history of folk music in America. The last Brothers Four album recorded with Mike Kirkland in the group. From that standpoint alone, it was great to finally find this LP in digital format. Beautiful harmonies and arrangements as would be expected.

Jonathon Linaberry keeps things ragged and direct on Ones to Keep Close, his third album as The Bones of J.R. Jones. Formed after graduating from Glasgow University in the early 1980’s by guitarist Paul Buchanan, bassist Robert Bell and keyboard player Paul Joseph Moore, The Blue Nile have released four albums — A Walk Across The Rooftops (1984), Hats (1989), Peace At Last (1996) and High (2004). Peace At Last has been digitally remastered by Paul Buchanan and Robert Bell working alongside the original The Blue Nile engineer Calum Malcolm.

The Blackwood Brothers sang gospel for over 60 years, and from the 1950s to the ’70s, they were one of the most popular gospel groups in the U.S. One of their biggest fans was a young Elvis Presley, who auditioned — and was turned down — for the group in 1953. The quartet was formed in 1934 by brothers Roy (b. December 24, 1900, Fentress, MS; d. March 21, 1971), Doyle (b. August 22, 1911, Ackerman, MS), and James Blackwood (b. August 4, 1919, Ackerman, MS; d. February 3, 2002, Memphis, TN), along with Roy’s 13-year-old son R.W. Blackwood (b. October 23, 1921, Ackerman, MS; d. June 30, 1954, Clanton, AL). The Blackwoods sang at churches around their base of Ackerman, MS, during the mid-’30s. By 1937, however, they began working a radio show in Kosciusko, MS. The quartet moved to WJDX in Jackson later that year, singing pop and country in addition to gospel. After two years in Jackson, they were popular enough to move to KWKH in Shreveport, LA, a regional superstation that broadcast over much of the South.
