Early-music ensembles TENET Vocal Artists and ACRONYM have joined forces to make the first commercial recording of a sumptuous work by composer Johann Heinrich Schmelzer (1623-1680), a sepolcro set in the tomb of Christ.
The grieving Virgin encounters two angels, three Apostles (Saints John, James, and Peter), three Marys (Magdalene, Cleopas, and Salome), Nicodemus, and Joseph of Arimathea. Each character tells her a story about Jesus, “dolorous memories” which only add to her torment.

The “symphonic” term in this album’s title is to be taken with a grain of salt: Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms (1930) relies on a vast wind section, with only a few cellos and double basses, harp and piano, and no violins nor violas; Schoenberg’sFriede auf Erden (Peace on Earth, 1907) is here given in hits original version for choir a cappella; Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms (1965) only require three trumpets and three trombones in addition to the strings and a rather Broadwayian percussions arsenal. Only the (rare and magnificent) Psalm 23 by Zemlinsky, composed in 1910, uses an almost “normal” orchestra for its time. The album’s symphonic honour is safe! It’s worth noting that Schoenberg’s specular and emotional Friede auf Erden is his last great reasonably tonal work, a masterpiece with a tendency for atonality – although a reasoned atonality, never sought for its own sake – that possesses a considerable expressionistic hue. The BBC Symphony Orchestra accompanies with great delight the phenomenal Tenebrae Choir under the lead of conductor Nigel Short.

Tenebrae and Nigel Short are joined by Aurora Orchestra together with mezzo-soprano Dame Sarah Connolly and narrator Simon Callow for A Walk with Ivor Gurney, an album celebrating the music of Ivor Gurney whose promising career as a composer was interrupted by World War I. Alongside four pieces of Gurney’s own music are works by his contemporaries, Ralph Vaughan Williams and Herbert Howells. The recording features a new piece by Judith Bingham commissioned by Tenebrae in 2013 for the choir with Dame Sarah Connolly.

As I look back over the last 25 years of performances and recordings (our debut concert was in London on 13 July 1991) I hope and trust that we still offer our audiences the same enthusiasm and excitement for baroque and classical music that we had in the early days. Concert performances have taken us all over Europe, to the Far East and Australia and throughout North and South America. In recent years our work in the Mission Churches of the Chiquitos and Moxos Indians in Bolivia has had a much wider impact than we could have imagined, promoting a rich cultural heritage that was until 10 years ago almost entirely unknown outside of Bolivia. Our recordings for Channel Classics during this period have not only embraced mainstream baroque music but also given rise to some unique projects, which have demonstrated the mutual trust and respect we have for each other. The opportunity to propose and then record some of these seemingly crazy ideas I have had over the years has further strengthened our relationship with Channel Classics, a record company who trust its artists integrity and take a keen interest in their development and promotion. Over the years the membership of the ensemble has naturally evolved and instead of seeing change as a weakness, I feel strongly that each new member has brought something unique to the ensemble and offered us a refreshing insight into repertoire we have known and loved for years, reinvigorating the ensemble. So to the next 25 years!

On his first solo album, violinist Fabio Biondi presents Telemann’s 12 Fantasias for Solo Violin, works that reflect both the composer’s full maturity and his proficiency as a violinist himself. The dozen fantasias on the programme were written for an unaccompanied instrument and manage to embrace both the long established style for polyphony in German violin music, with fugues and multipart writing for the soloist, as well as more modern trends. For this recording Biondi played an 18th century Ferdinando Gagliano violin.

Of his Symphony No. 6, Pyotr Illyich Tchaikovsky wrote, But I absolutely consider it to be the best, and in particular, the most sincere of all my creations. I love it as I have never loved any of my other musical offspring. Tchaikovskys Symphony No. 6 was the composers final completed symphony. He led the premiere performance in October of 1893, only nine days before his death. This release also includes the world premiere recording of the Rusalka Fantasy. This orchestral suite is taken from Dvoraks opera by Manfred Honeck and Tomas Ille. Performing these works is the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, which has a long and rich history of touting the worlds finest musicians and conductors. The Karajan Official Remastered Edition comprises 13 box sets containing official remasterings of the finest recordings the Austrian conductor made for EMI between 1946 and 1984, and which are now a jewel of the Warner Classics catalogue.
For many, Herbert von Karajan (1908-1989) – hailed early in his career as ‘Das Wunder Karajan’ (The Karajan Miracle) and known in the early 1960s as ‘the music director of Europe’ – remains the ultimate embodiment of the maestro. The release of the Karajan Official Remastered Edition over the first half of 2014 marks the 25th anniversary of the conductor’s death in July 1989 at the age of 81.
He was closely associated with EMI for the majority of his recording career (specifically from 1946 to 1960 and then again from 1969 to 1984). EMI’s legendary producer Walter Legge sought him out in Vienna just after World War II and the long relationship that ensued embraced recordings with the Vienna Philharmonic, the Philharmonia (the orchestra founded by Legge), the Berlin Philharmonic (of which Karajan became ‘conductor for life’ in 1955), the forces of La Scala, Milan, and the Orchestre de Paris.
The Karajan Official Remastered Edition will feature primarily symphonic and choral music. The entire edition will comprise recordings remastered from the original sources in 24-bit/96kHz at Abbey Road Studios, the world’s most renowned recording studio.
