James Price Johnson (February 1, 1894 – November 17, 1955) was an American pianist and composer. A pioneer of stride piano, he was one of the most important pianists in the early era of recording, and like Jelly Roll Morton, one of the key figures in the evolution of ragtime into what was eventually called jazz. Johnson was a major influence on Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Art Tatum, Thelonious Monk, and Fats Waller, who was his student.
Johnson composed many hit songs, including the unofficial anthem of the Roaring Twenties, “The Charleston”, and he remained the acknowledged king of New York jazz pianists through most of the 1930s. Johnson’s artistry, influence on early popular music, and contributions to musical theatre are often overlooked, and as such, he has been referred to by musicologist David Schiff as “The Invisible Pianist.”

On this album, we have juxtaposed the work of two musicians who, at a first glance, don’t have anything in common. One is Jean Cras, captain of a french ship and a dilettante musician born at the turn of the twentieth century, the other is Ludwig van Beethoven, who needs no introduction. And yet, if we decided to use a looking glass and examine the threads that bind all human destiny together, we would realize that Cras read the works of Beethoven religiously before going on watch, and maybe this man who was subject to the whims of Mother Nature had found in the great composer a master who himself was used to great internal tempests.

„I wanted to create an instrument that, by the character of it’s voice, was similar to string instruments, but with a great deal more force and intensity.”
The essence of this first recording by Quatuor Morphing, transcriptions of works for string quartet, is contained in this short text proposed by Adolphe Sax in the patent documents for the saxophone.
It is the polymorphic aspect of the instrument’s timbre, between that of the strings, woodwinds and the brass, which makes possible infinite expressivities and aesthetics, and which makes possible and legitimate a whole world of transcriptions.
From the Paris Conservatoire where the group gained a wealth of experience in numerous international competitions and concerts, the Quatuor Morphing has progressively constructed an artistic identity around the idea of transcription as an opportunity for a saxophonistic challenge. This recording shows the group meeting this challenge with aplomb.

Freedom’s first album after drummer/singer Bobby Harrison totally revamped the lineup was typical lumpy British hard rock circa 1969, with nothing in the way of interesting songwriting or instrumental innovation to grab one’s attention. In a way, they made for an ideal support act for an emerging and insecure headliner; they weren’t going to upstage anyone. Sometimes they would leave off the generic blues-flavored hard rock for poppier or folkier material with harmonies, but melody and originality were not present in abundance. And it’s playing a losing game to record covers of the Beatles’ “Cry Baby Cry” and the Zombies’ “Time of the Season,” both of which had just been released, in much better and more popular versions of course, by the original artists; the Howlin’ Wolf covers don’t do the master much credit, either. The record has been reissued as half of a double CD that also includes their 1971 album Through the Years.

Ensemble Gilles Binchois record the three Lamentations de Jérémie pour le samedi saint by Claudin de Sermisy, who was music director of the French Royal Chapel under François I. They were probably taken from the court repertoire: Sermisy’s settings of the vocalises on the Hebrew letters and the final invocations to Jerusalem (the latter sung by the lower voices alone) are concise, but rich in harmonic colour. A beautiful recording of this masterpiece.

The Mélodia brass ensemble is a Swiss orchestra founded in the 1960s1 on the Vaud Coast in Switzerland. These are two young musicians aged 17 and 16, Jean-Paul Herbez and Christian Monney from Rolle, members of the Rolloise Fanfare, who wanted to create a small group. Thus, accompanied by some comrades of the Brass Band, they performed two pieces at the annual evening of their society, at the Rolle Casino, in December 1959. It was a surprise for the audience and a success. The following year, our two friends decided to recruit friends from the surrounding localities. Melodia was born. It is to Christian Monney that we owe the choice of this name2.
In 1975, the orchestra decides to change its name to “Ensemble of copper instruments of the Coast “Melodia”. And it is probably in 1985, following the transfer of the rehearsal space to Lausanne, the center of gravity of the musicians’ homes, that the mention “from the Coast” will finally be removed3.
Since 20084 composed of two brass band ensembles which compete respectively at the Excellence and second category levels of the Swiss Brass Band championship5.
