Stefano Di Battista – Morricone Stories (2021)

The new album by saxophonist Stefano Di Battista is an authentic tribute to Ennio Morricone’s film music.Di Battista plays with the master’s themes as if they were magical matter, substance of that special and mysterious area of music that almost inexplicably fills our soul. The choice in some cases falls on marginal themes, or rather less famous or forgotten films, such as Veruschka or what you did to Solange, to dig better into a repertoire still to be discovered (Morricone has worked on the music of more than five hundred films). Then of course there is the enjoyment of pure and listen to the themes that we know very well that they become perfect jazz standards, such as Metti una sera a cena, swinging and ironic, or The good the bad and the ugly, who reveals himself as a duel of improvisations, with the sax, who takes the part of that brief hint of notes that at the beginning he was inspired by the verse of the coyote, before splitting up in the emotion of the purest of the Theme of Deborah There was a time in America, which is one of the most beautiful inventions of Morricone. Not to mention the delicate reinterpretation of the mission, with an elegant passage from the original oboe to the soprano sax, until the surprise of an unpublished, a piece entitled Flora, which the Maestro gave to Di Battista.

This recording contains Francesco Pennisi’s (Acireale, 11 February 1934 – Rome, 8 October 2000) complete works for solo piano, according to the latest catalogue. The piano compositions have rarely been performed and studied even less frequently, for many reasons. They are concise and liberated at first sight from a serious commitment to composition and open to ‘other’ dimensions compared to his main production, since they unfold playfully, almost with nostalgia. This recording not only has the merit of restoring Pennisi’s piano repertoire to its full entirety for the first time, but it illustrates its due importance in the composer’s active pursuit of an underlying texture of echoes, sounds, and resonances.

Although the idea came much earlier, it must have been somewhere around 2015 when I decided to finally commit to making an album completely focused on bass guitar. No more competing for frequencies with the other instruments, just bass guitars sounding as natural as possible. Using simple but effective compositions and various playing styles. Freedom!

One of the least explored areas of Beethoven’s compositions is the miscellaneous sequence of canons, early exercises in counterpoint, mature jokes and jeux d’esprit that he wrote over many years. He composed a two-part canon for the composer Hummel in 1816 and in 1823 one for four voices (written in a tavern) for Count Lichnowsky. He also wrote birthday and Christmas greetings for colleagues and friends, and songs that punned on recipients’ names or poked fun at them.

One might hardly believe it, but Corinna Schreiter and Stefan Grasse are only now, after years of cooperation, presenting their first CD together.
Thematically, they have completely immersed themselves in the German-language romantic song and compiled familiar, but also wonderful new discoveries knowledgeably. The title “Leise flehen meine Lieder”, taken from the song “Ständchen”, describes very aptly the intimate mood of this album.
