“We sound possessed on these songs,” says guitarist/vocalist Carrie Brownstein about Sleater-Kinney’s eighth studio album, No Cities to Love. “Willing it all–the entire weight of the band and what it means to us–back into existence.”

The new record is the first in 10 years from the acclaimed trio–Brownstein, vocalist/guitarist Corin Tucker, and drummer Janet Weiss–who came crashing out of the ’90s Pacific Northwest riot grrrl scene, setting a new bar for punk’s political insight and emotional impact. Formed in Olympia, WA in 1994, Sleater-Kinney were hailed as “America’s best rock band” by Greil Marcus in Time Magazine, and put out seven searing albums in 10 years before going on indefinite hiatus in 2006.

But the new album isn’t about reminiscing, it’s about reinvention–the ignition of an unparalleled chemistry to create new sounds and tell new stories. “I always considered Corin and Carrie to be musical soulmates in the tradition of the greats,” says Weiss, whose drums fuel the fire of Tucker and Brownstein’s vocal and guitar interplay. “Something about taking a break brought them closer, desperate to reach together again for their true expression.” The result is a record that grapples with love, power and redemption without restraint. “The three of us want the same thing,” says Weiss. “We want the songs to be daunting.”

When it comes to death metal, no band is more convincing than Slayer. For other bands, focusing on death, Satanism, the supernatural, and the occult became a cliché; but Slayer’s controversial reflections on evil always came across as honest and heartfelt. The group’s sincerity is the thing that makes South of Heaven so disturbing and powerful — when the influential thrashers rip into such morbid fare as “Spill the Blood,” “Mandatory Suicide,” and “Ghosts of War,” they are frighteningly convincing. With their fourth album, Slayer began to slow their tempos without sacrificing an iota of heaviness or incorporating any pop elements. South of Heaven would be Slayer’s last album for Def Jam. When Rick Rubin and Russell Simmons (brother of Joseph “Run” Simmons of Run-D.M.C.) parted company, Slayer went to Rubin’s new company Def American, while LL Cool J, Slick Rick, and other rappers recorded for Simmons at Def Jam. –AllMusic Review by Alex Henderson

Slayer built a rabid following with faster-than-light thrash metal, eerie, disturbing lyrics, and bassist/singer Tom Araya’s screamed vocals. 1986’s „Reign In Blood“, a blinding metal classic that clocked in at below a half hour in length and was produced by Rick Rubin, put the band on the metal map. Although Slayer was a bunch of longhairs, it wasn’t uncommon to see hardcore skinheads slamming away at the band’s shows. But 1988’s „South Of Heaven“ alienated many of Slayer’s punk fans, as the group slowed their speed metal to a Black Sabbath-like crawl.

Slayer’s 1998 release, produced as always by Rick Rubin, has been called the band’s most experimental album, embracing elements of the nu metal scene that was emerging and gaining in popularity at the time. Among the standout tracks is the song Stain of Mind, which became a staple of the group’s live shows.

The atmospheric venue, steeped in rock history, gave fans a brilliant opportunity to see the band up close as they delivered a set packed with more recent solo tracks, including several from the new album, and classics from Slash’s earlier career with Guns ‘n’ Roses and Velvet Revolver. The intimate setting inspired the band to deliver a scintillating, dynamic performance that is brilliantly captured on this DVD.

Slash hasn’t always been a workaholic, but since the end of Velvet Revolver in 2008, he has been working on projects and tours at a steady pace, both solo and with Guns N’ Roses. Even if he would like to present it as a band’s album (The Conspirators), it’d be hard to miss his name written in bold on the album cover. He is still the main focus of this fourth solo album (the third with the Conspirators), despite the merits of singer-guitarist Myles Kennedy and the less experienced Todd Kerns (bass) and Brent Fitz (drums, piano). After the delightful double live album, Live at the Roxy 25.09.14, we could have expected him to move on to something else (if not to reconnect with the ambition, and the many guests, of the Slash album), but the guitarist preferred to remain strictly in the grain of a classic rock band that doesn’t integrate styles outside its comfort zone.

After releasing EP after EP, dubstep and EDM superstar Skrillex finally got around to releasing his debut album, but before making any assumptions about this debut’s weight or sense of purpose, know that Recess was leaked via a video game app, a Skrillex-approved Asteroids clone called Alien Ride. Flashy fun with kinetic stuff happening all about, this good-time ride of an album is certainly suited for being leaked by a video game, coming on strong and silly with “All Is Fair in Love and Brostep,” a bass-drop bonanza with Jamaican dancehall duo Ragga Twins taking the tune into Major Lazer territory. The Twins return for the like-minded “Ragga Bomb,” a dubstep stunner although a redundant one, pointing out perhaps why the supernova Skrillex prefers the EP format at this stage. The album’s diverse guest list goes a long way when it comes to LP-required levels of variety, plus when an indie crooner from Passion Pit (Michael Angelakos) rubs shoulders with a barking pop-rapper (Fatman Scoop) and it works, the album’s title track deserves praise of Diplo proportions. Speaking of the Mad Decent/Major Lazer boss, Diplo’s here on the bumping highlight “Dirty Vibe,” while other EDM favorites like Kill the Noise stop by to pump up the volume in earnest. Still, this already busy album becomes even busier with so many cooks in the kitchen, and shoots off nonstop fireworks as if this was Skrillex’s audio variety special, sponsored by the wing of the stereo industry that sells, re-cones, or fixes subwoofers. This is an official debut on size alone and comes from a man who already staked his claim, so grab one of his earlier EPs for a quick fix that’s more thrilling and streamlined, then take Recess’ title as an indication of its mindset. Reckless fun, frivolous thrills, and fast, loud friends fill this one. – David Jeffries
