The title of this album evokes not only the life-long journey of all these musicians, but also a lasting friendship between soprano Barbara Hannigan and the Emerson String Quartet. One of the greatest string quartets of the last four decades, the Emersons will disband in October 2023. Barbara and the Emersons were determined to record Schoenberg’s Quartet No. 2 since they started performing the work together in 2015. “The sheer sonic scope of this work takes us on a voyage into previously uncharted territory” say the Emerson musicians. “It’s like a tall, gnarly tree to climb (all the way to another planet, it seems), yet one with deep and emotional roots”, continues Barbara Hannigan. “The soprano’s fin-de- siècle primal scream at the end of the 3rd movement, begging to be relieved of love, is a heavy hitter”. Melancholie is a rare and intimate work by the young Hindemith, “a gem of a piece” that the Canadian soprano has wanted to explore for many years. The fascinating Quartet Op. 3, composed by Berg in 1909 as he was finishing his apprenticeship with Schoenberg, features the quartet on its own. And to round out the album, pianist Bertrand Chamayou joins Barbara and the Emersons for another deeply moving encounter by way of Chausson’s heartbreaking Chanson perpétuelle.

The last two years of Schubert’s life were among his most prolific, giving rise, amongst other works, to his last piano sonata, in B flat major, and his second set of Impromptus, both of which are performed here by Dasol Kim. In the mid 1960’s, there was a Greenwich Village, NYC pop band called The Blues Project which was primarily informed by folk, rhythm & blues, jazz and pop music of the day. One of their early success was entitled “Flute Thing,” a tune from the group’s 1966 album Projections (Verve / Folkways). Keyboardist / vocalist Al Kooper, a founding member of The Blues Project, wrote “Flute Thing.” He went on, in 1967, to found the pop-rock band Blood, Sweat & Tears.

Waterslide’ is the difficult second album by Damata. As a sequel to their 2021 debut album ‘What’s Damata’,’ waterslide ‘takes the band’s already established qualities and explores the outer edges of these. The compositions are more produced, the genre jumps are more frequent, the dreamlike stretches are more soaring and the ugly parts are, well, uglier. ‘Waterslide’ can be said to have a consistently 90s nostalgia about it, like a childish version of the band members raving around in an absurdist fantasy water park in musical form.

In celebration of Gwyn Pritchard’s 75th birthday, Métier releases Features and Formations: a fascinating insight into Pritchard’s process. This is contemporary, seemingly mercurial, work, rich in structure. Starting from pre-compositional planning and techniques, the composer subtly evolves rhythm and pitch to create a sound-world that manifests great atmosphere and intensity.
Features and Formations includes five of Gwyn Pritchard’s ensemble works (a quintet, two quartets and a trio) and three pieces for solo piano, all performed by the distinguished Swiss contemporary music group Ensemble ö! conducted by Francesc Prat, and the piano solos by their pianist Asia Ahmetjanova.
