The 40th Anniversary Edition of Fairytales is the final of many incarnations of singer Radka Toneff and pianist Steve Dobrogosz’s jewel of a duo album. In the course of the 40 years that have passed since its release – on LP in 1982, CD in 1986 – Fairytales has sold well over 100,000 units, making it the top-selling Norwegian jazz record ever, and was also voted Norway’s best album of all time in a poll of Norwegian musicians in 2011.

The Baroque dream team of Rachel Podger and Kristian Bezuidenhout interpret the astonishing music of C.P.E. Bach’s Violin Sonatas in C Minor, B Minor, D Major and G Minor. The two early sonatas here from the 1730s resemble the older style of his father. Listening to these works, you can imagine J.S. Bach glancing over Emanuel’s shoulders while he wrote them as a teenager at home in Leipzig. The later sonatas, written 30 to 50 years later, reveal an emancipated composer whose developed musical language embodies the ‘Empfindsamer Stil’, the directly emotional and rhetorical style characteristic of northern-german music of the time.

After the multi-million selling “A Whiter Shade of Pale,” Procol Harum coalesced around a new lineup and cut a debut album in two days, the sales of which were only fair (because the hit song wasn’t on it originally). Then they did Shine on Brightly, which initially drew on recordings going back to late 1967 – in the course of preparing their first proper LP, the band junked an entire side of blues-based numbers in favor of the 18-minute suite “In Held ‘Twas I,” which rivaled anything yet heard from such established progressive rock outfits as the Nice or the Moody Blues in length and surpassed them in audacity, with an extensive spoken part surrounded by virtuoso classical and psychedelic passages (and even a featured spot for Dave Knights’ bass). It all proved that they were more than a one-hit wonder and, released in late 1968, the album extended the definition of progressive rock, even as it kept much of the music rooted in established rock genres. “Skip Softly,” for all of its grand piano pyrotechnics, was also a showcase for Robin Trower’s bluesy, high-energy guitar attack, and “Wish Me Well” was an even better vehicle for his instrument, while “Magdalene (My Regal Zonophone)” was an interesting exercise in nostalgia highlighted by Matthew Fisher’s organ.

Raphaël Sévère releases a new album dedicated to Mozart’s concerto and quintet, in collaboration with the Modigliani Quartet and the Orchestre de Chambre de Paris conducted by Lars Vogt.

“In the terrible period when we were all deprived of culture, Mozart’s music has really been life-saving for me, it has truly filled my life. To make up for these months of solitary confinement, I have worked on several recording and composition projects. But for want of partners, audiences, encounters, I was overwhelmed with a great feeling of emptiness. Music only makes sense if it is shared.”

The present album features a return to the artist’s life. A rebirth. With Mozart.

own independent record label, Idaho Records, Fires was met with much critical acclaim but did not gain commercial recognition.

After working as a support act for artists such as Sheryl Crow and Suzanne Vega, Pallot was signed up to 14th Floor Records, who were impressed with the audience response and after-show sales of her album. Thus, Fires was reissued in late April 2006 with revamped artwork and some slight remixes on some of Pallot’s songs. The album entered at UK #41 and later, on the strength of the popular single “Everybody’s Gone to War”, made it as far as #21.

To date, the album has been certified gold in the UK for sales of over 100,000, and has earned Pallot a nomination at the 2007 BRIT Awards for Best British Female. As of 4 October 2009, the album has sold 138,563 copies in the UK.

The album has been remastered and being re-issued on the 12th April 2024, and on vinyl for the first time.

With time, we come to understand the way the joy of connection is mirrored by the void of loss, how the constancy of love is matched only by the impermanence of life, the simple idea that we could not create light if we did not risk the dark—we’d never need to.

So it is with METZ, a band once known for blowing out eardrums with songs of joyous rage who have, over their past few records, begun exploring ways to turn abrasiveness into atmospherics, the evolution of their sound not only a reflection of the maturing of the band themselves but also of a changed world that demands nuance and compassion to comprehend and to survive.

It was a journey already underway on 2020’s Atlas Vending, but one that reaches new heights on Up On Gravity Hill, where the Canadian trio creates a kaleidoscopic sonic world as tender as it is dark, aided once again by engineer Seth Manchester (Mdou Moctar, Lingua Ignota, Battles, The Body). Deep, detailed, and unyieldingly personal, it is not only METZ’s most powerful record to date but also their most beautiful.

Jean-Pierre Sasson – Portrait of an Unsung Jazz Guitarist, Vol.2 (2024 Remastered) (2024) [Official Digital Download 24bit/44,1kHz]

Jean-Pierre Sasson – Portrait of an Unsung Jazz Guitarist, Vol.2 (2024 Remastered) (2024)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 01:11:25 minutes | 651 MB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Fresh Sound Records

Jean-Pierre Sasson (1918-1999) was a magnificent yet often overlooked figure in the history of French jazz guitar. Despite his remarkable contributions during the golden era of French jazz in the 1950s, Sasson’s legacy has sadly faded from memory.

In 1939, he took his first steps into the professional music scene, initially drawn to the strong personality of Django Reinhardt, but ultimately developing his style based on the schools of Teddy Bunn and Al Casey. Listening to them, Sasson learned to interpret the blues with an authentically black spirit.

Amid the upheavals of World War II, Sasson moved to London in 1940, where he continued to interact with the English jazz scene until he joined the R.A.F., serving as captain-pilot until the end of World War II. Upon returning to France in 1946, Sasson was captivated by Charlie Christian’s electrically amplified guitar and his single-string solo technique, marking a crucial moment in Sasson’s musical evolution. Later, in the early 1950s, Sasson did not evade the significant influence, both in terms of rhythm and harmony, that Jimmy Raney and Tal Farlow exerted on many French guitarists and modern jazz in general. Nevertheless, Sasson gradually distanced himself from these influences to forge his own versatile path.

As a jazzman, Sasson’s significant quality lay in an attack that is both flexible and incisive, generating swing with great ease of execution. His delightful sound evolved somewhat over the years, parallel to his evolving style. His entire approach was dedicated to one objective: producing swing.

The guitarist with the most recorded jazz sessions in France, Jean-Pierre Sasson, is featured in this CD set, presenting tasteful standards and casual originals that offer a variety of tempos and moods. Listeners can trace the evolution of his playing across the different ensembles featured on these recordings. This collection provides an inspiring experience and serves as a deserved tribute dedicated to showcasing the musicianship of Jean-Pierre Sasson. ―Jordi Pujol

These Danes are not to be trusted: Freddy And The Phantoms is the name of the band – sounds like Schmalztolle, petticoat and old rock’n’roll from the name. On the promo photos, however, the quartet does one on country: stetson, beards, fringed jackets. And then they also title their – already sixth – album HEATHEN GOSPELS. Pagan church chants, freely translated. But the confusion only really gets around, you can hear it in the record: because there is nothing to be found out about the good, old rock’n’roll, rather little about country and certainly nothing about gospel. Instead, the mischievous Danes bite serves up plenty of bluesy rock, mixed according to the old recipe. Because an organ is the most striking instrument in the arrangement next to the guitar, Freddy And The Phantoms are always reminiscent of deep purple – right in the opener “Heart Is A Highway” and even more so in the bone-dry “Blues Trap”. If it’s like with “Blood” on a country course, you quickly feel reminded of Jon Bon Jovi’s 90s hit “Blaze Of Glory”. Not bad, but very old-fashioned – and a bit too good.

The blues is full of the mystical and the hidden. Bluesmen hid magical objects like rattlesnake rattlers in their guitars, which would augment the supernatural sounds of their strings with the sympathetic resonance of the snake. The devil appeared as a snake to Eve, and to Robert Johnson. In Fire Lapping at the Creek we hear these resonances from a distant time and place, from this deepest wellspring of American music making.
