Directed by Lasse Hoile (Steven Wilson/Opeth), Distant Satellites A Sort Of Home Coming is a stunning concert film of Anathema s homecoming show on March 7th 2015 in the spectacular setting of the Liverpool Anglican Cathedral. Anathema have spent the vast majority of their career making music that defies description. Formed in the mid 90s, they have risen to become one of the UK s most cherished and critically acclaimed rock bands.

With their star rising ever higher, Anathema returned in 2014 with Distant Satellites. The new studio album showcased another imperious forward step into the realm of miraculous songwriting. It has proved to be the band s most widely acclaimed & celebrated record with the likes of The Guardian (UK), Metal Hammer (UK/DE), Kerrang (UK), Classic Rock (UK/DE), Prog Magazine (UK), Aardschok (NL), Rock Hard (DE), Rolling Stone (Aus) heaping great praise on the album.

During 2014 & 15 the band toured the world extensively to promote Distant Satellites both as a full band and also with a stripped down acoustic show. It was the band’s performance at a one off show at Gloucester Cathedral in 2014 that opened up a new chapter for the band, giving them an opportunity to set the music in an ornate, beautiful environment. In March 2015 the band played an acoustic tour of Cathedrals in the UK that culminated in a sold out show in their hometown of Liverpool in the city s impressive Liverpool Anglican Cathedral.

The show described by Prog Magazine as a once in a lifetime experience that words can barely do justice.

Having previously worked with Anathema on their acclaimed Universal concert film, Lasse Hoile captured the 100 minute acoustic set in high definition against the sensational backdrop of Liverpool Cathedral.
Featuring 15 songs selected from the albums Distant Satellites, We re Here Because We re Here, Hindsight and Weather Systems, Daniel Cavanagh, Vincent Cavanagh, Jamie Cavanagh and Lee Douglas were accompanied throughout by David Wesling on cello alongside special guest, the renowned violinist, Anna Phoebe on a haunting rendition of Anathema .

The audio has been produced and mixed by Christer André Cederberg who worked on their Distant Satellites album, with the cover and booklet artwork featuring the stunning photography of from the show and behind the scenes by long time collaborator Caroline Traitler.

Kscope are set to release Distant Satellites A Sort Of Home Coming as a Blu ray disc presented in an amaray case with a 12 page colour booklet.
The Blu ray features the full 100 minute concert plus a band documentary with 5.1 audio mixed by Bruce Soord.

Anathema have spent the vast majority of their career making music that defies description. Formed in the mid 90s, they have risen to become one of the UK’s most cherished and critically acclaimed rock bands.

After premiering new music on a dedicated UK & NL tour in November 2016, culminating in a stage performance at London’s Wembley Arena with Opeth, the band have been teasing the release of their first full-length since 2014’s spellbinding ‘Distant Satellites’. Winning multiple awards for their recent output, including Album of the Year, Live Event of the Year & Multimedia Package of the Year for 2010’s ‘We’re Here Because We’re Here’, 2012’s ‘Weather Systems’ and 2013’s ‘Universal’ respectively at the Prog awards, Anathema are bringing their darkest, most challenging and unexpected material to new album ‘The Optimist’.

Led by brothers Daniel and Vincent Cavanagh, Anathema recorded ‘The Optimist’ in winter 2016 at Attica Studio in Donegal and Castle of Doom Studios in Glasgow with producer Tony Doogan (Mogwai, Belle & Sebastian, Super Furry Animals) at the helm. Doogan’s influence is instantly tangible; for the first time in years Anathema recorded as a live band for an album, capturing an energy normally only present on stage. A technique that will whet the appetites of Anathema’s global army of ardent disciples, who are well aware of the band’s supreme live power – previously captured on the celebrated and in demand concert film, ‘Universal’.

Anathema – 6 albums (1998-2015) [Vinyl Rip 24Bit/96Khz]

Anathema are a British rock band from Liverpool. The line-up consists of singers and guitarists Vincent and Daniel Cavanagh, their brother Jamie Cavanagh on bass, siblings John and Lee Douglas, respectively drummer and singer, and keyboardist Daniel Cardoso since November 2012.

The band was founded as Pagan Angel in 1990 by the three Cavanagh siblings, John, and singer Darren White, as a death/doom band. At the time White was the only singer of the band. The following year, Jamie left and was replaced by Duncan Patterson. Under this line-up, Anathema released their first EP, The Crestfallen (1992), and their first album, Serenades (1993). However, White left in 1995; Vincent decided to act as Anathema’s vocalist in addition to his guitarist function in the albums The Silent Enigma (1995) and Eternity (1996), which were going into a more gothic metal direction.

In 1997, John left the band, and was replaced by Shaun Steels for the album Alternative 4 (1998). Both Patterson and Steels left the same year, replaced by Dave Pybus and a returning John Douglas, while former My Dying Bride keyboardist and violinist Martin Powell also joined the band (Daniel Cavanagh was also acting as the band’s only keyboardist, and shared this position since). The only album released with this line-up was Judgement (1999): the same year Powell switched positions with Cradle of Filth’s keyboardist Les Smith who joined Anathema, and Lee Douglas, John’s sister, was added to the line-up as a backing and occasional lead vocalist.

The band released their sixth album A Fine Day to Exit in 2001, turning to an alternative sound. Shortly after the release, Pybus announced his departure and was replaced by the band’s original bassist, Jamie Cavanagh, reuniting the three brothers in the band for the first time since 1991. There were no new members for the next ten years, with the albums A Natural Disaster (2003) and We’re Here Because We’re Here (2010) all being recorded and released by the same line-up, with the sound turning even more towards progressive rock; however, Daniel Cavanagh left Anathema in 2002 to join Antimatter, returning in 2003. Smith left Anathema in 2011, and Vincent and Daniel both assumed the function of keyboardist for the band’s ninth album, Weather Systems, in 2012. The same year, Cardoso, the band’s live keyboardist since 2011, joined as a full-time member.

The band’s tenth studio album, Distant Satellites, was released on 9 June 2014 via Kscope.

After Falling Deeper, Anathema’s orchestral detour into greatest hitsville, the Liverpool band return with a true follow-up to We’re Here Because We’re Here. What Falling Deeper accomplished was to make the band comfortable with the string arrangements of Dave Stewart; they’re used abundantly — and to great benefit — on Weather Systems (produced by Christer-Andre Cederberg with Daniel and Vincent Cavanagh). Guitarist Daniel has written a set of songs that are more daring, harmonically ambitious, and poetically sophisticated than anything he’s previously attempted. Vocalist and occasional keyboardist Vincent arranges them for drummer John Douglas, vocalist Lee Helen Douglas, and help from Cederberg on bass. Piano, acoustic, and electric guitars continue to dominate Anathema’s latter-day sound, but strings are now an immense part of their textural architecture. Anathema’s brand of 21st century prog embraces pop’s grandest scales and accessibility without mindless kitsch, shallowness, or phony detachment. This material, which is lyrically on the heavy end of the emotional scale, is offset by the sheer beauty of the compositions and orchestrations. The album explores the range of human emotions regarding death — the acceptance of its inevitability and the transcendence of the fear it engenders — which illuminates these nine songs. According to Daniel’s lyrics, it’s the ferocity of love that both bridges the mortal divide and renders fear impotent. While on the surface the piano and acoustic guitar intros on most of these songs may seem to be repetitive, they are merely feints, serving as guideposts to vast interiors, musically, sonically, and lyrically. It’s a gorgeous whole, but there are standouts. The two parts of “Untouchable” feature Vincent and Douglas on alternate, contrasting leads. The first part is mostly driven by guitars and drums with strings added for depth; the second is drenched in strings and becomes the first part’s mirror image. “Lightning Song” features Douglas. Her crystalline vocal helms the track as it gradually gathers intensity until explosive electric guitars transform it into an anthem, yet she rises above to carry it home. “Sunlight” begins quietly, but its drums and electric guitars gather into a storm force, yet the hook remains transparent. Closer “Internal Landscapes” — introduced with ambient electronics and a field recording of a near-death experience — breaks free from its initial weightiness with its sheer musicality and honest emotional expression from Vincent and Douglas. Weather Systems stands with Anathema’s finest work. They’ve not only escaped the limitation of expectations, they’ve exceeded them. (more…)

Anathema – We’re Here Because We’re Here (2010) [DVD-AUDIO ISO]

Anathema – We’re Here Because We’re Here
Artist: Anathema | Album: We’re Here Because We’re Here | Style: Alternative Rock | Year: 2010 | Quality: DVD-Audio (MLP 5.1 48kHz/24Bit, MLP 2.0 48kHz/24Bit, DTS 5.1, LPCM 2.0 48kHz/24Bit) | Bitrate: lossless | Tracks: 10 | Size: 5.61 Gb |Covers: in archive | Release: KScope | Peaceville, 2010 | Note: Not Watermarked

Anathema are one of the select few bands that actually progress with each album, honing their songwriting skills to provide a better means for their musical message — but a six-year gap in the recording schedule that preceded We’re Here Because We’re Here still left many fans wondering, where do they go from here? Turns out, it was in the right direction. The most easily recognized change is the increased emphasis on piano, which is the leading instrument on most songs, but if this description brings the likes of Coldplay and Fray to mind, the music does not, for the simple reason that Chris Martin, let alone the horde of his mainstream rock imitators, can never rival the immense emotional charge of Anathema’s music. The cathartic effect is further amplified by the music’s elaborate but clear arrangements, with pianos, strings, shivering vocals, and quietly wailing guitars blending together into elegant and dramatic songs with a rich sound of mini-symphonies — and clever hooks hidden in the textures. Vibe-wise, it is prime Anathema, with the mood tethering on the brink of despair, but always resolving into optimism or at least dreamy, elegiac resignation (to speak of maturity again), the way no one seems to be able to do since Sunny Day Real Estate threw in the towel a decade previously (though the two bands have little in common stylistically). We’re Here Because We’re Here is not perfect — the polished production smoothes out the hooks, making it easy to glide on the surface instead of immersing oneself into the music on the first listen. But still, this is Anathema’s most mature and complex effort to date — exactly as could be expected of the band’s new album. (more…)
