Caught live with just her piano trio at Chicago’s famous now-defunct nightclub, Anita O’Day is in an ebullient mood as she tosses off a series of standards and novelties. Whether this is an accurate snapshot of her live act is open to question; the stage business in between numbers seems rather formal and one doesn’t really feel the excitement of a live performance. Yet O’Day is clearly in a creative mood, whether allowing her vulnerability to show in the torchy ballads or reveling in the boppish up-tempo workouts. Her vocal on “Tea for Two” is a virtuoso deconstruction, full of satiric quotes and rhythmic shifts at a warp-speed tempo. Fleet-fingered Joe Masters decorates the fills with standard bop runs on the slightly-out-of-tune house piano.

Waiter, Make Mine Blues is a vocal jazz album by Anita O’Day released in April 1961 on Verve Records. Anita O’Day had many fine groups to back her ever since she began lining out jazz, and this collection, recorded at the peak of her career, is a fine example of this statement, considering she’s accompanied by orchestras arranged and conducted by such talented bandleaders as Bill Holman, and Russ Garcia. In every setting, she sings with superb phrasing, and unique inflections. She exhibits her characteristic comprehension of the lyrics, as well as the melody, without becoming a slave to either. She has an uncanny ability to bend and mold a syllable or word into a meaningful musical experience, capriciously individualizing each tune by altering introduction, tempo, or mood.

This album has had a twisting and turning genesis. The first eight tracks were recorded in 1952 and released under the title ‘Anita O’Day Collates’ by Norgran Records in 1953. Norgran was Norman Granz’ original label. Norgran then reissued the album in 1955 under the title ‘Anita O’Day Sings Jazz.’ It was finally released in 1957 under the present title by Verve (which Granz established in 1956 and absorbed the Norgran catalog.) In addition to the original eight tracks, the final release contained four more.

Two of the best jazz vocal LPs of 1956 from one of the great female stylists, both of which were five-star rated by Downbeat magazine.

Oscar Peterson was one of Anita O’Day’s favourite musicians. After his death at the end of 2007 this is a timely reminder of his superb accompanying work from an earlier period while the singer proves herself one of the few genuine jazz vocalists with original interpretations of a set of standards including ‘Old Devil Moon’, ‘Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered’.

The bonus album, “Pick Yourself Up” was recorded with the star-studded Buddy Bregman Orchestra. Members included the Candoli brothers, Stan Getz, Jimmy Giuffre, Bud Shank, Barney Kessel, Frank Rosolino and Shelly Manne among others..

In keeping with the Jazz ‘Round Midnight theme, this Anita O’Day sampler errs on the mellow side of things with 16 after-hours gems from the lady of bop vocal rhythm. For fans more interested in sampling all of O’Day’s talents, though, there’s such well-balanced Verve collection as Jazz Masters and Compact Jazz to check out. But, if your optimal inroad to jazz vocals is a smooth one, this disc – with ballad highlights like “Man With a Horn,” “I’m Not Lonely,” and “Early Autumn” – will make for ideal listening. And while O’Day is not the first word in jazz ballads (think June Christy or Ella Fitzgerald), her beguiling delivery – along with the disc’s wealth of top-notch charts and amazing cast of sidemen – makes up for any lack of rarefied mood moments. Packed with gems from the singer’s ’50s and early-’60s prime, Jazz ‘Round Midnight: Anita O’Day will make the familiarizing process as easy as sipping a glass of French red.

„Anita O’Day recorded many rewarding albums in the 1950s when her voice was at its strongest, and this collaboration with the Oscar Peterson Quartet (comprised of pianist Peterson, guitarist Herb Ellis, bassist Ray Brown, and drummer John Poole) may very well be her best. Not only is the backup swinging, giving a Jazz at the Philharmonic feel to some of the songs, but O’Day proves that she could keep up with Peterson. “Them There Eyes” is taken successfully at a ridiculously fast tempo, yet the singer displays a great deal of warmth on such ballads as “We’ll Be Together Again” and “Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered.” While Peterson and Ellis have some solos, O’Day is never overshadowed (which is saying a lot) and is clearly inspired by their presence. The very brief playing time (just 33 minutes) is unfortunate on this set, but the high quality definitely makes up for the lack of quantity. A gem.“ (Scott Yanow, AMG)

Anita O’Day is heard in prime form on this early Verve date. Accompanied by an orchestra conducted and arranged by Buddy Bregman, O’Day is at the peak of her powers on such songs as “You’re the Top,” “Honeysuckle Rose,” an emotional rendition of “A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square,” and “As Long As I Live.” One of her better recordings, this date is recommended. ~ Scott Yanow

The album was awarded 4½ stars by Allmusic with Bruce Eder’s review stating “This strange (and strangely compelling) album is the most controversial of all O’Day’s Verve Records releases, popular among O’Day’s hardcore fans for the showcase that the Three Sounds’ near-minimalist accompaniment affords her singing. .. while O’Day sings five songs. She is amazingly restrained and low-key throughout most of her work here … she seems uninspired in terms of any inventiveness, with long stretches of silence where one would have expected her to improvise. What is here is fine … but there’s amazingly little life to the procedings
