Folk-soul chanteuse Ayo emerged as one of Europe’s biggest new pop stars of 2006 with her breakthrough debut LP Joyful. Born to a Nigerian father and gypsy mother in Cologne West Germany on September 14 1980 as a child Ayo absorbed the musical traditions of her parentage as well as influences including American soul reggae and Afrobeat all staples of her fatherЎЇs extensive record collection. Ayo first studied violin before moving to piano and guitar. At 21 she relocated to London later dividing her time between Paris and New York City and earning attention while opening for neo-soul kindred spirits including Omar and Cody Chestnutt. After recording a five-song demo reel Ayo briefly receded from the live circuit in late 2005 to give birth to her first child. Early the following year she signed to Polydor and with producer Jay Newland completed Joyful (the English translation of her Yoruba name) in just five days. Buoyed by the lead single Down on My Knees the album fell just shy of the German Top Ten. In 2008 Ayo opted for the Bahamas to record her sophomore album Gravity at Last. Produced once again by Jay Newland and again recorded in just five days the album went on to reach the number one spot on the French album charts 2011 saw the release of her third album. Named after her daughter Billie-Eve was once again recorded in five days with the help of rapper Saul Williams and Lenny Kravitz collaborator Craig Ross.

Her label originally suggested an album of covers, but Ayo has too many personal things to express to accept such an offer. Perhaps relics of this original idea, three pre-existing songs are nevertheless present on the track list of this fifth album from the German-Nigerian singer: Né quelque part by Maxime Le Forestier, Throw It Away by Abbey Lincoln and Fool’s Gold by the late Lhasa. The artist who made a name for herself in 2007 with her hit Down On My Knees casts aside the folk guitar that she seemed so inseparable from previously, in order to focus on her voice, which is lit up by Freddy Koella’s stripped back arrangements. Ayo transports her clear vocals and warm interpretations to the core these infinitely delicate songs (Rest Assured, with its hesitant piano), tender and sensitive (Fix Me Up and its bluesy guitars), but also sometimes groovy (Afro Blue, which only features a cymbal and a pizzicato double bass). Among some other gems of the album are some slower retro tracks (Just Like I Can’t) and a surprising piece which blends rhythmic reggae and nostalgic jazz (I’m in Love). At the crossroads between soul and folk, Ayo’s graceful, sensitive and intimate melodies make you glad she chose to offer up some original tracks.

Blending equal amounts of Sade’s cocktail-lounge take on world music, Jill Scott’s dignified neo-soul and Corinne Bailey Rae’s sunny AAA pop, the debut album by German singer/songwriter Ayo sounds like it will be a mainstay in middle-of-the-road coffee houses for years to come. The daughter of a Roma gypsy mother and Nigerian father, Ayo Ogunmakin makes exactly the sort of polite, low-key, largely acoustic pop-soul that’s a mainstay of a certain mature, well-heeled demographic; indeed, a live Ayo performance recorded in Monte Carlo was a popular PBS special in late 2007. But while all that implies a certain inoffensive blandness, Ayo’s a genuinely talented singer/songwriter, with a malleable voice that swings easily from the helium-pitched wispiness of the gentle bossa nova “And It’s Supposed to Be Love” through the Tracy Chapman-like murmur of “What Is Love?” to the assertive, soulful strength of “Letter by Letter.” While there are occasional missteps like the utterly forgettable reggae cop “Only You,” Ayo’s songwriting is refreshingly free of the earnest self-importance of many similar artists, trafficking neither in exhibitionist emo-porn nor the sort of vague sub-Bob Marley moralizing that’s the usual province of dreadlocked white guys in hemp shorts. Joyful may not be the most exciting debut of 2006, but it’s a satisfying example of a subgenre that all too often goes wrong.

The self-titled fifth album from Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter Ayo is a collection of soulful, sometimes reggae-tinged folk songs. On Ayo, the musician stepped up in the writing and production departments to take on more responsibility than on her past efforts, such as Joyful and Gravity at Last. The result is an album derived from an eclectic musical background that touches on a wide range of themes, such as her call for justice on the Ferguson-inspired “Boom Boom”, or casting aside material things and figuring out what really matters on the album’s opening track, “Nothing”.
