The latest chapter in Columbia/Legacy’s highly acclaimed Bob Dylan Bootleg Series takes a fresh look at ‘Time Out of Mind’, Dylan’s mid-career masterpiece, celebrating the album and its enduring impact 25 years after its original release on September 30, 1997. ‘Fragments – Time Out of Mind Sessions (1996-1997): The Bootleg Series Vol. 17’ follows the evolution of songs written for the album, from intimate early incarnations in the previously unreleased 1996 Teatro sessions featuring Dylan (vocals, guitar, and piano), Daniel Lanois (guitar and organ), Tony Garnier (bass) and Tony Mangurian (drums and percussion) through incandescent live renditions (also previously unreleased) showcasing Dylan and his touring ensemble channeling the songs on-stage from 1998-2001.

Comebacks are Bob Dylan’s thing. Call him irrelevant and he’ll summon his demons and write another masterpiece. In the 1990s, one of America’s greatest creative engines was drifting. The Don Was-produced Under The Red Sky, Dylan’s only collection of new songs in the decade, was met with a collective shrug. In 1995, there was the death of Grateful Dead’s Jerry Garcia—a “big brother” Dylan would call him in a eulogy he wrote for Rolling Stone. But starting in late 1996, Dylan began writing a record’s worth of tunes in his home state of Minnesota that, after an extended recording process in California and Florida, would become Time Out of Mind. Critics and fans who’d consigned him to the scrap heap once again were effusive in their astonishment: Maybe Bobby wasn’t done after all! Although the lyrics are often bitter and tinged with mortality, the love song melodies on Time Out of Mind are tender and his delivery often more pleading than angry or accusatory. The album also marked a return to writing and performing original materia, producing some of the best songs of his later career including “Make You Feel My Love,” “Love Sick” and “Tryin’ to Get To Heaven.”

Where Dylan’s first Greatest Hits took its title literally, Greatest Hits, Vol. 2 is a greatest-hits album only in the loosest sense of the term. While the double album does contain several genuine hits — “Lay Lady Lay,” “Tonight I’ll Be Staying Here with You,” the non-LP “Watching the River Flow” — it is largely comprised of album tracks that became classics, either through Dylan’s own version or through covers. These include “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right,” “All I Really Want to Do,” “My Back Pages,” “Maggie’s Farm,” “She Belongs to Me,” “If Not for You,” and “Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues,” among many others. There are also various rarities scattered throughout the 21 songs, including a live version of “Tomorrow Is a Long Time” from 1963, a live take of “The Mighty Quinn (Quinn the Eskimo),” and the Basement Tapes songs “I Shall Be Released,” “Down in the Flood,” and “You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere.” While some of the cuts may not be immediately familiar to some listeners, Greatest Hits, Vol. 2 in many ways is a more accurate picture of the depth and breadth of Dylan’s talents, making it an excellent introduction. And it’s not just for casual fans, because the rarities and sequencing are revealing for even devoted Dylan fans.

The 1974 tour by Bob Dylan and the Band brought together two of the most-respected acts in rock history for what was one of the biggest concert events of the decade. Recorded at several different venues over the course of the two-month tour, „Before The Flood“ captures Dylan and The Band in fine form. Having backed Dylan on and off since 1966, The Band were very comfortable with his music, and on this album they provide Dylan with some of the finest accompaniment of his career.

Dylan opens the show with spirited versions of hits like “It Ain’t Me Babe” and “Lay Lady Lay,” as well as the acidic “Ballad of a Thin Man.” Having fired up the crowd, Dylan steps away from the mike to let the Band perform barnstorming versions of “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” and other classics from their repertoire. After The Band nearly brings down the house with their intense rendition of “The Weight,” Dylan returns to bring it all back home with powerful performances of “Like A Rolling Stone” and “Blowin’ In The Wind,” providing a spectacular finale to one of the finest live rock albums of the ’70s.

Quite possibly the worst album by either Bob Dylan or the Grateful Dead, the live Dylan & the Dead completely squanders its promise. Working from an intriguing selection of songs it includes staples like “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” and more obscure gems like “Joey” the Dead and Dylan contribute listless, meandering versions that are simply boring. Both artists have done much better reportedly they have done better together, according to various bootleg fans but Dylan & the Dead is a sad, disheartening document.

On this 15th volume, Bob Dylan’s Bootleg Series contains a treasure which, until now, only listeners of pirated CDs were privy to. With 50 tracks, Travelin’ Thru 1967-1969: The Bootleg Series vol. 15 gives an inside look on the different stops Dylan made in Nashville, the Mecca of country music, between 1967 and 1969, and especially on the legendary recording sessions done with Johnny Cash as well as those for his albums John Wesley Harding, Nashville Skyline and Self Portrait. The meeting of these two figureheads of twentieth century music happens at a key moment. Rock’n’roll reigned supreme all over the world during the late 60s, as everyone tried to outdo each other’s decibel levels over a backdrop of the Vietnam War which had been raging since 1965. After his flamboyant trilogy Bringing It All Back Home/Highway 61 Revisited/Blonde On Blonde, Bob Dylan takes things down a notch with simpler sounds accompanied by a smaller ensemble. Here, he is celebrating classic rock’n’roll and country music by emphasising its singularity and reminding us of its links to the roots of North American pop music. Ever the elusive icon of counterculture, a label he always hated, Dylan tackles an almost historical repertoire, distancing himself from any hippie connotations which were so in style at the time. His voice is fundamentally opposite to Johnny Cash’s, yet here they both engage in a pulsing, no-frills paso doble which is as symbolic as it is forthright.
