It’s hard to imagine Bruce Springsteen describing a project of his as a concept album—too much prog baggage, too much expectation of some big, grand, overarching story. But nothing he’s done across five decades as one of rock’s most accomplished storytellers has had the singular, specific focus and locus, lyrically and musically, as this long-gestating solo effort—a lush meditation on the landscape of the western United States and the people who are drawn there, or got stuck there.

The premise was simple. Bruce Springsteen invites a dozen or so New York City musicians–packing banjos, fiddles, accordions and the like–to his New Jersey farmhouse for a three-day hootenanny, and tape is rolling. The results are sublime, his 21st album featuring their versions of songs harvested from Springsteen’s dog-eared LPs by Pete Seeger. Not all written by Seeger, the songs are how the American folk icon interpreted them, and these organic recordings, with no rehearsals or overdubs, pay tribute with the simplicity and spontaneity he intended. It’s not hard to link Springsteen’s dissatisfaction with American politics to the protest song “We Shall Overcome” or even the Irish ballad “Mrs. McGrath,” where he alters the lyrics to read, “I’d rather have my son as he used to be/Than the King of America and his whole navy.” But the beauty of these Seeger Sessions are pieces that underscore the mood of the bandleader, which borders on down-home amusement: the bluegrass outlaw ballad “Jesse James,” the Dylanesque “Pay Me My Money Down” and the euphoric “Jacob’s Ladder,” a gumbo-and-whiskey-fueled romp that could pass for the closing hymn at the Church of Asbury Park. –Scott Holter

“Tracks” is a four-disc box set by Bruce Springsteen, released in 1998 containing 66 songs. This box set mostly consists of never-before-released songs recorded during the sessions for his many albums, but also includes a number of single B-sides, as well as demos and alternate versions of already-released material. A treasure trove of material mostly left on the cutting-room floor from his early auditions for John Hammond through his work in the 1990s. Not a retrospective but an “alternate road map” and a glimpse at the ambition, development, and prolific creativity of a Rock icon.

American singer-songwriter Bruce Springsteen’s second studio album. The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle was recorded with the E Street Band and features their popular set-closing single “Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)”. After it’s initial release the record didn’t gather much attention, however after Springsteen released his third album, Born To Run, and his popularity grew, The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle was more appreciated by his fans.

The Rising is the twelfth studio album by American recording artist Bruce Springsteen, released in 2002 on Columbia Records. In addition to being Springsteen’s first studio album in seven years, it was also his first with the E Street Band in 18 years.[1] Widely believed to have been based on Springsteen’s reflections during the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks, the album is predominantly centered upon themes of relationship struggles, existential crisis and social uplift.

Upon its release, The Rising was a critical and commercial success, and hailed as the triumphant return for Springsteen. It debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart, with first-week sales of over 520,000 copies. With this, Springsteen became the oldest person to achieve a first-week sales of over a half of a million copies in the United States.[citation needed] The album also garnered a Grammy Award for Best Rock Album in 2003; although nominated for the Album of the Year award as well, it was beaten by Norah Jones’ debut album Come Away with Me. Title song “The Rising” was also a Grammy recipient.

The many voices that come out of the ether on Bruce Springsteen’s The Rising all seem to have two things in common: the first is that they are writing from the other side, from the day after September 11, 2001, the day when life began anew, more uncertain than ever before. The other commonality that these voices share is the determination that life, however fraught with tragedy and confusion, is precious and should be lived as such. On this reunion with the E Street Band, Bruce Springsteen offers 15 meditations — in grand rock & roll style — on his own way of making sense of the senseless. The band is in fine form, though with Brendan O’Brien’s uncanny production, they play with an urgency and rawness they’ve seldom shown. This may not have been the ideal occasion for a reunion after 15 years, but it’s one they got, and they go for broke. The individual tracks offer various glimpses of loss, confusion, hope, faith, resolve, and a good will that can only be shown by those who have been tested by fire. The music and production is messy, greasy; a lot of the mixes bleed tracks onto one another, giving it a more homemade feel than any previous E Street Band outing. And yes, that’s a very good thing.

The Promise is a compilation album by the American rock singer Bruce Springsteen, released November 16, 2010 on Columbia Records. It is both a triple vinyl and a double CD compilation of previously unreleased songs drawing from the Darkness on the Edge of Town sessions. The album is also available as part of the box set The Promise: The Darkness on the Edge of Town Story. The two-CD version of the release entered the UK Albums Chart at number 7. It had been in production for many years and was originally scheduled to be released for the 30th anniversary in 2008. The Promise debuted at #16 on the Billboard 200, while the box set, The Promise: The Darkness on the Edge of Town Story, debuted at #27. Upon its release, The Promise received acclaim from most music critics. “Ain’t Good Enough for You”, a track from the album, was added to BBC Radio 2 and 96.2 The Revolution’s playlists at the end of 2010.
The album features one of the last appearances of Clarence Clemons before his death in June 2011. Clemons is featured on the song “Save My Love”, which was the only song on the album completely re-recorded by Springsteen and the E Street Band for the project.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band will release the film “The Legendary 1979 No Nukes Concerts” in mid-November. The concert at the MUSE Benefit Concerts in New York’s Madison Square Garden will be shown for the first time with edited full-length film recordings. Three release dates have been set for the concert film.

“Hit! I wrote a hit last night!” –Bruce Springsteen to Roy Bittan, as told by Peter Ames Carlin

Well, not really, as it turns out.

Accounts vary as to the precise origin of “Roll of the Dice.” According to Peter Ames Carlin’s excellent biography, Roy Bittan recalls the inspiration stemming from a casual catch-up session between he and Bruce a few weeks after Bruce broke up the E Street Band. Roy demoed his new state-of-the-art synthesizer setup for Bruce and showed him how his rig could capture the classic E Street Band sound all on its own via an instrumental track he’d whipped up. Bruce was astounded at both the versatility of Roy’s setup and the track itself, and he insisted that Roy make him a tape of the track to take home with him.
