The Keith Jarrett Trio, playing live at NDR Funkhaus, Hamburg in July 1972. The trio with Haden and Motian was Jarrett’s first great band, his choice of players a masterstroke. Charlie and Paul hadn’t worked together until Jarrett brought them into each other’s orbit in 1966. With the bassist who had learned his craft in Ornette Coleman’s band, and the drummer from Bill Evans’s ground-breaking trio, Jarrett was able to explore the broadest scope of modern jazz, from poetic balladry to hard-swinging time-playing to ferocious and fiery free music. The improvisation heard in the Hamburg concert includes episodes with Keith on soprano sax and flute as well as piano, while Motian expands the role of percussion in the music, developing the supple, elastic, supremely unpredictable vocabulary that would subsequently become such a crucial part of both Jarrett’s groups and Paul’s own.

Keith Jarrett and Charlie Haden broaden the scope of their duo project to showcase jazz classics like Thelonious Monk’s “Round Midnight” and Bud Powell’s spritely “Dance Of The Infidels”. Love songs, however, are to the fore in this selection, with tender versions of “My Old Flame”, “My Ship”, “It Might As Well Be Spring”, “Everything Happens To Me”, and “Every Time We Say Goodbye” as well as alternate takes of “Where Can I Go Without You” and “Goodbye”, every bit as touching as the Jasmine renditions. “When we play together it’s like two people singing”, said Jarrett of his reunion with Haden. The intentions of the song are honored, the shades of meaning in a melody or a lyric explored instrumentally. As Charlie Haden put it, “Keith really listens, and I listen. That’s the secret. It’s about listening”.

Time/Life centers around two live recordings—the final recordings with Charlie Haden and his Liberation Music Orchestra–from the 2011 Middelheim Festival: Haden’s 1979 composition Song for the Whales and Miles Davis’ Blue In Green, both arranged for orchestra by Carla Bley. After Haden’s death in 2014, the LMO, with the help of Carla Bley, Steve Swallow, and Ruth Cameron, recorded three works by Bley to create an album that honored Haden and his concern for the environment. This is that tribute.

„This latest one, poetically titled as Tokyo Adagio, is more recent, Haden duetting with the Cuban pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba and draws from a March 2005 Blue Note Tokyo club four-night residency. The polite audience reaction and applause is respectful and the sound of a few knives and forks neither here nor there in the background not distracting: the album feels lived in, which is far better than clinical.

Throughout, the duo operates in a comfort zone that values felicitous melody and openhearted sentiment over displays of bravado. Jasmine is as unashamedly expressive a recording as either man has ever made. – Steve Futterman, The New Yorker

This recorded, intimate document was recorded at Jazz Beat during the Montreal Jazz Festival in 1990 and sees its first official release on this Impulse! volume. Bassist Charlie Haden and guitarist Jim Hall played a number of duet concerts together over the years, but this was certainly among the very earliest. Given their respective careers up to this point, both men had nearly perfected the artistry of playing in this particular chamber jazz setting. That all said, it does not prepare the listener for the canny, intimate, yet absolutely electric interplay on offer here. From readings of standards such as “Bemsha Swing,” “Body and Soul,” and Skylark” through to Ornette Coleman’s “Turnaround” and excellent originals by both men — including Haden’s bookends, the tenderly dissonant “First Song” and the knotty “In the Moment,” and Hall’s sprightly melodic Latin waltz “Down from Antigua” and his fingerpopping “Big Man Blues” — this music is an adventure top to bottom. It unfolds gradually and cannily over 76 minutes. Ethan Iverson’s liner essay is spirited, insightful, and illuminating to boot. This set is not only impossible to criticize, but adds an immeasurable depth to the catalogs of both artists. ~ Thom Jurek

The duo performs with soulful inventiveness while maintaining the songs’ emotional essence on this album of familiar gospel and Americana tunes from their childhood. Included is a swinging rendition of “Give Me That Old Time Religion,” a breathtaking cover of Ellington’s “Come Sunday” and countless others. Experience this seminal jazz album as a pristine high resolution recording.

This recording marks a very important occasion for the two musicians, and is the result of three days of intensive rehearsal and recording. The venue was Cami Hall in New York, chosen for its location, acoustic properties, character and charm. This album is a feat of improvisation and none of the spontaneity is lost through the recording of their music on to tape. Once again, Naim sought the expertise of sound engineer Ken Christianson from Pro Musica, Chicago, who was there to capture this musical milestone.

A really great meeting of jazz giants – both very familiar names, with very familiar styles – but somehow also quite fresh and surprising in this setting! Haden’s the especially strong charmer – because with just the piano of Brad Mehldau alongside him, there’s lots of room to hear his more subtle touches on the bass – especially as the album features all long tracks, most past the 10 minute mark – which really lets both players open up! Mehldau is pretty great, too – past his successful sound, with some surprisingly modern touches as he makes his way over extended performances of “Au Privave”, “My Old Flame”, “Long Ago & Far Away”, “My Love & I”, and “What’ll I Do”

Heartplay is a subtle and sublime collaboration. Charlie and Antonio play a combination of compositions by each other, and a beautifully sparkling track called Child’s Play by Fred Hersch. Charlie’s bass sounds beautifully deep and rounded, an incredibly satisfying and symbiotic partner with Antonio’s guitar. These elegant and eloquent duets are totally atmospheric and an absolute joy to listen to.
