Fazıl Say is one of the world’s most prominent pianists but he is also a much-admired composer with a substantial catalogue of works. He combines both these accomplishments in his two Violin Sonatas, the first of which is suffused with Turkish motifs and dances, such as the horon. The Second Sonata takes as its theme the abuse of nature and the need to resist despoliation. His Violin Concerto is subtitled ‘1001 Nights in the Harem’ and is full of rich melodies and atmosphere, and features an array of Turkish percussion instruments.

Matthias Goerne continues a Schubert survey that has already established him as one of the most fantastically gifted exponents of the song repertoire; Goerne does not ‘interpret’ Schubert, he lives each lied from the inside and invites the listener to share this poetic and musical intimacy without ever falling into the trap of overstatement. This sixth volume in the series also features an unforgettable performance of Schubert’s last piano sonata by one of the baritone’s favourite partners, Christoph Eschenbach. Offered on a free bonus CD, this ‘second swansong’ reveals hitherto unexplored resonances under his expert fingers.

This is Alexander Zemlinsky’s high romantic masterpiece, a symphonic drama-cum-orchestral song cycle that owes something both to his Viennese fellow conductor Gustav Mahler’s ‘Song of the Earth’, and to his pupil Schoenberg’s ‘Gurrelieder’…yet while Schoenberg was looking to atonality and his 12-tone system to design his way out of a 20th century tonal crisis, his teacher went another way, as we hear so clearly in this lushly orchestrated work.

Matthias Goerne’s 2014 release of Winterreise concludes his series of Franz Schubert’s lieder on Harmonia Mundi. This is the third recording Goerne has made of the song cycle, following his 1997 album with Graham Johnson on Hyperion, and a live recording released in 2004 on Decca, where he was joined by Alfred Brendel in a recital at Wigmore Hall. Here, Goerne and his accompanist, Christoph Eschenbach, deliver a subtle version that is full of intense darkness. The gloom and despair of the wanderer is increasingly conveyed in Goerne’s singing, so by the end of the journey, the feeling of exhaustion in Der Wegweiser (track 20) and Der Leiermann (track 24) brings the point of the cycle across. The recording is reasonably close to the performers and they have credible presence, which enhances the songs’ deeply personal expression. This recording attests to the continuing popularity of Winterreise, and it is one of the best of several versions to be released in 2014.

Christoph Eschenbach goes into raptures when he speaks about recording Brahms with his Konzerthaus Orchestra Berlin:” They were the ideal partner for the Brahms cycle! A lot of ideas, which I was happy to incorporate into my overall concept, derived from the musicians themselves. And they in turn were interested in my approach.” Eschenbach sees the musicians of the orchestra as the perfect counterpart to his love of Brahms. “The Konzerthaus Orchestra has fabulous soloists, especially in the woodwinds and the horn department. Furthermore, their string sound is very ‘Brahmsian’. We very quickly came to an agreement as to how Brahms should sound.”

You probably didn’t think you’d ever hear the venerable Vienna Philharmonic play music from the Harry Potter films. However, they make a fine job of “Hedwig’s Theme” as part of a let-your-hair-down summer program under the baton of Christoph Eschenbach and themed around figures from the world of fairy-tale and fantasy. Renée Fleming, in voluptuous voice, is luxury casting for a sequence of songs and arias—with one of her party pieces, Rusalka’s “Song to the Moon”, making a welcome appearance.

Brahms wrote a vast number of lieder over a period of 40 years. The 200 or so he permitted to survive show just how important the genre was to his compositional process. The selection presented here illustrates the diversity of a corpus that features Heine (as with so many other composers), but also a wide variety of other poets whom he set to music with the same consummate skill as the ‘Four Serious Songs’ Op.121, the peak of his magnificent and highly individual output.

With this new album devoted to Prokofiev, cellist Bruno Philippe continues his exploration of Russian music.
