A year after Thad Jones’ decision to end his musical partnership with drummer Mel Lewis, Lewis’ jazz orchestra was changing its sound. Valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer became the big band’s chief arranger for a time, and his charts show the influence of modern classical music while usually still swinging. This hard to find album features the orchestra playing live at their home base (the Village Vanguard), and such soloists as pianist Jim McNeely and Dick Oatts on alto and soprano; flugelhornist Clark Terry, and Brookmeyer himself are featured on the nearly 16-minute “El Co” and “The Fan Club.” Worthwhile if not essential music.

Friendship is a very special album Clark Terry and Max Roach recorded together in 2002. At that time, Terry was 82 years old and Roach 78, and as it turned out to be one of the last recordings Roach made before passing in 2007. The bulk of this unique album consists of six duo performances by the two principals, two solo performance by Terry, one solo performance by Roach, and the remaining four are trio and quartet performances with pianist Don Friedman and bassist Marcus McLaurine.

Flugelhornist Clark Terry recorded quite frequently in the 1980s, and his consistency was very impressive. A DR winner in its genre!

Terry’s good humor, joyful and immediately distinctive sound, and creative, bop-oriented ideas combined to form a very accessible style. This Chesky CD finds C.T. joined by pianist Don Friedman, bassist Victor Gaskin and drummer Lewis Nash for a variety of superior standards and Terry’s lone original “Finger Filibuster.” The songs all pay tribute to various trumpeters, and some, such as “Pennies from Heaven,” “Little Jazz” and “I Don’t Wanna Be Kissed,” were not performed by the flugelhornist all that often; the resulting music is fresher than usual and often quite inspired. Recommended.

Dizzy Gillespie called him “the greatest trumpet player on earth”; he was a major influence on the young Miles Davis (they’re both from St. Louis), and with over 900 recording sessions to his credit, Trumpeter-Flugelhornist Clark Terry is one of the most recorded jazz artists. Recording live at the Jazzhouse in Hamburg, Germany, Terry is spurred on by a world-class rhythm section that includes bassist Larry Gales of Thelonious Monk fame. Terry’s warm, personable tone, technical mastery and inventiveness sizzles throughout as he takes on an up-tempo Ellington “Perdido” and exhibits his famous “mumbles” scat singing style on “Jazzhouse Blues”. Wham! With quotes and asides galore, it’s a merry musical go ‘round.

Color Changes is an album by trumpeter Clark Terry featuring performances recorded in late 1960 and originally released on the Candid label.

Scott Yanow of Allmusic says, “This is one of flügelhornist Clark Terry’s finest albums. Terry had complete control over the music and, rather than have the usual jam session, he utilized an octet and arrangements by Yusef Lateef, Budd Johnson, and Al Cohn. …The material, which consists of originals by Terry, Duke Jordan, Lateef, and Bob Wilber, is both rare and fresh, and the interpretations always swing. Highly recommended”. Describing it as the leader’s best album, The Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings says that the variety of tones provided by the arrangement of the various horn players is particularly striking.
