Filmed by Grammy-nominated director Paul Dugdale, the Ghost Stories Live 2014 film documents the band’s unique performance of the Ghost Stories album to a small handful of fans in March 2014, two months prior to the album’s release. Shot in a custom-built amphitheatre at Sony Studios, Los Angeles, the ground-breaking production sets the band’s performance against stunning 360-degree and overhead imagery.
Parts of the performance were first broadcast in May 2014 as a Coldplay TV Special by major broadcasters around the world, including NBC in the US and Sky Arts in the UK (where the film has already been nominated for Best Live Coverage at this year’s UK Music Video Awards). But Ghost Stories Live 2014 is the first time that the performance has been sequenced as originally conceived: a visual representation of the Ghost Stories album. (more…)

X&Y is the third studio album by British alternative rock band Coldplay, released 6 June 2005 in the United Kingdom via the record label Parlophone. The album, which features influences of electronic music, was produced by the band and British record producer Danton Supple. Development of the album was often troubled; the album’s original producer, British record producer Ken Nelson, was supposed to produce much of the album, however, many songs written during their sessions were ditched due to the band’s dissatisfaction. The album’s cover art is a combination of colours and blocks, which is a representation of the Baudot code.
The album contains twelve tracks and an additional hidden track, “Til Kingdom Come”. It is omitted from the track listing on the album sleeve, but listed as “+” on the disc label and inside the album booklet. It was originally planned for American singer-songwriter Johnny Cash to record it with lead singer Chris Martin, but Cash died before he was able to do so. The song “Talk” appeared on the main track listing, although it was thought to have been downgraded to a B-side for the album’s subsequent single releases, after it leaked online in early 2005.

When Coldplay sampled Kraftwerk on their third album, X&Y, it was a signifier for the British band, telegraphing their classicist good taste while signaling how they prefer the eternally hip to the truly adventurous; it was stylish window dressing for soft arena rock. Hiring Brian Eno to produce the bulk of their fourth album, Viva la Vida, is another matter entirely. Eno pushes them, not necessarily to experiment but rather to focus and refine, to not leave their comfort zone but to find some tremulous discomfort within it. In his hands, this most staid of bands looks to shake things up, albeit politely, but such good manners are so inherent to Coldplay’s DNA that they remain courteous even when they experiment. With his big-budget production, Eno has a knack for amplifying an artist’s personality, as he allows bands to be just as risky as they want to be — which is quite a lot in the case of U2 and James and even Paul Simon, but not quite so much with Coldplay. And yet this gentle encouragement — he’s almost a kindly uncle giving his nephews permission to rummage through his study — pays great dividends for Coldplay, as it winds up changing the specifics without altering the core. They wind up with the same self-styled grandiosity; they’ve just found a more interesting way to get to the same point.

During pandemic lockdown, some people baked bread, others took up fostering kittens. Chris Martin, apparently, watched Star Wars. The Coldplay frontman has said that the band’s ninth album was partly inspired by the Mos Eisley cantina band and “wonder[ing] what musicians are like across the universe.” And honestly, thank god we have a band big enough to be able to afford to take chances like Music of the Spheres, because the results are thrilling. After the spacy intro “Music of the Spheres,” opener “Higher Power” is a flat-out dance track, powered by a punchy electro beat, and joyously uplifting. Martin has said “the song is about trying to find the astronaut in all of us, the person that can do amazing things.” (Although, at one point, he sings “Drocer nekorb a ekil mi”—”I’m like a broken record” in reverse.) It’s the first example of the album being a family affair, too, as Martin’s daughter Apple delivers the opening lilt. She also has a co-write on “Let Somebody Go,” a lovely piano ballad that finds Martin duetting with Selena Gomez; it takes a surprising turn on the bridge, slipping into smooth jazz. Apple’s brother Moses joins in on the chorus of “Humankind” (with an altered Stephen Fry on the intro), a supercatchy and energetic collection of bleeps and bloops and “alien” voices, ’80s synth and strident acoustic guitar that is going to be awesome to work out to. It’s a bit of a throwback to the dance-pop sounds of bands like MGMT circa 2008. It won’t surprise you here to find out the record is produced by Max Martin, the man behind slick hits from Britney Spears, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift and others. His polished style is a surprising complement to Martin’s unpolished rasp and a major asset on songs like “My Universe,” a collaboration with BTS performed in English and Korean that cruises a funky groove of ’80s FM pop; it’s an earworm we’ll all be stuck with for months. “People of the Pride” pushes Coldplay in a new, edgier direction—complete with ominous garage-rock guitar and an emo-pop stomp. Curiosity “Biutyful” warps the vocals to sound like a cutesy ET crooning a space-lounge melody. Twinkly “Infinity Sign” incorporates the soccer chant “Ole Ole Ole.” The record closes out with one of the most wonderfully grandiose, swing-for-the-stars songs of Coldplay’s career. Clocking in at 10 minutes, “Coloratura” is the band’s The Dark Side of the Moon moment, weaving in a music box melody, fluttering strings, McCartney piano and spacey Gilmour guitars. It name-checks Galileo’s discovery of the Callisto moon and declares,”It’s the end of death and doubt and loneliness is out … Coloratura, the place we dreamed about.” (It will be great for planetarium laser shows.) Martin’s voice cracks in all the right places, and the idea—”In the end it’s all about the love you’re sending out—is so elemental but expressed with such a sense of wonder about and gratitude for the universe, you can’t help but feel a sense of hope. – Shelly Ridenour

You have to be really sure of your concerts to be able to release a fifth live album after only 18 years career time. But stage performances are such a speciality for Coldplay that Chris Martin’s group can allow themselves to release this Live In Buenos Aires album rather an eighth studio album, which is being eagerly awaited their fans… Recorded during the A Head Full of Dreams World Tour, this album captures (with amazing sound quality) the powerful 15th of November (2017) show in the Argentinean capital. As per usual, the four Brits play with the constant participation of a totally devoted crowd. U2 often put on these types of shows, Coldplay being their most obvious successors. From the stadium hymn (Viva La Vida) to the early classics (Yellow, Clocks), Coldplay put on a real electric fiesta.  – Clotilde Maréchal
