Mondo Mando is an all-instrumental album by American musician David Grisman, released in 1981.
David Grisman’s desire to break or extend the boundaries of string music, folk, and bluegrass resulted in recordings that are also of interest to jazz listeners. The mandolinist performs seven colorful originals (including “Dawg Funk”), plus Django Reinhardt’s lesser-known “Anouman” with various string players, including Mike Marshall on mandolin, violinists Darol Anger and Mark O’Connor, guitarist Tony Rice, and bassist Rob Wasserman; the Kronos String Quartet helps out on “Mando Mando.” Unpredictable and fairly unique music. – Scott Yanow

Picking up where they left off with 1995’s duet recording Tone Poems II, mandolin master David Grisman and guitar great Martin Taylor blithely saunter through a dozen jazz staples. Taylor’s playing boasts a blues-soaked intensity and insouciant fire that isn’t normally associated with the willowy and refined soloist, while Grisman showcases a wide variety of adventurous ideas, but at no time do the issues seem forced. The sympathetic and delicate rhythmic support of bassist Jim Kerwin and drummer George Marsh contributes to the air of easygoing delight. Taylor even picks up the mandolin himself on a hidden “keepsake”.

Their musical history dates back to college days at New York University circa 1963 when the Greenwich Village folk revival was in its’ heyday. They made their first recording together as members of the Even Dozen Jug Band with future luminaries Maria Muldaur, Stefan Grossman and others. The rest, of course is musical history. John Sebastian became lead singer and songwriter of one of America’s most popular bands – the Lovin’ Spoonful and David Grisman spearheaded an acoustic music revolution with his genre-defying “Dawg” music.
Finally, after a 40+ year hiatus, their paths crossed again at a benefit concert in Mill Valley, California. After this mutually enjoyable evening of spontaneous music, it became obvious that they would continue collaborating and the result is Satisfied – a stunning collection of acoustic duets featuring traditional folk tunes, blues, classy instrumentals and originals by these two legendary masters.

This Grammy-nominated disc heralds the origins of the highly acclaimed acoustic duo of Jerry Garcia (guitar/vocals) and David “Dawg” Grisman (mandolin). They had been chums for years by the time they began their direct partnership in earnest on December 7, 1990, with a nine-song set at the Sweetwater in Mill Valley, CA. Over half of that material would be reworked the following spring — for inclusion on this disc — at Grisman’s newly appointed, plush, and well-lit Dawg Studios. Along with David Grisman Quintet members Jim Kerwin (bass) and Joe Craven (percussion/fiddle), Garcia and Grisman revive a few familiar tunes covering every dimension of popular music, ranging from the blues (“The Thrill Is Gone”) to folk-rock (“Friend of the Devil”), as well as pop music standards such as Irving Berlin’s “Russian Lullaby” — which Garcia had previously covered on his 1974 Garcia (Compliments) album — and Hoagy Carmichael’s “Rockin’ Chair.” They also examined the origins of authentic traditional folk (“Walkin’ Boss”/”Two Soldiers”). Additionally, the pair collaborated on the original instrumental “Grateful Dawg,” which coalesces the distinct styles of Grisman’s “Dawg Music” with Garcia’s Grateful Dead intonations. The results are categorically brilliant and undoubtedly helped usher in the contemporary bluegrass and progressive bluegrass movements. Grisman’s sonically perfected studio coupled with his decades of hands-on engineering and producing expertise helped immensely in capturing and accurately reproducing their unaffected acoustic intimacy. Nowhere is this more evident than the 16-plus minute “Arabia” — which would become a showstopper once they hit the road in the early ’90s. The sound quite literally envelopes the listener, who autonomically becomes drawn into the track as it twists and slithers through several different movements — including the central theme, credited in the liner notes as being based on the traditional Cuban melody “Hasta Siempre.” All dimensions of “unplugged” enthusiasts who have not already made Jerry Garcia/David Grisman a top priority are strongly encouraged to do so.

Legend has it that a pizza delivery boy lifted Jerry Garcia’s cassette tape of two evenings worth of very special music from his kitchen counter, thus paving its way into underground tape trading circles and giving a handle to these incredible performances. Now at last, from the vaults of Dawg Studios comes the sonically superb official release of this historic jam session, the only meeting of guitar greats Jerry Garcia and Tony Rice, introduced to each other by their mutual friend and musical associate, mandolinist/ producer David Grisman. The Pizza Tapes capture these virtuosos at a rare moment in time, free of pressure, hassles or any given agenda other than making music and having plenty of fun.
