A spirit of cross-cultural camaraderie lights up Brothers in Bamako, a collaborative project from American blues/folk artist Eric Bibb and West African singer/guitarist Habib Koite. Their original tunes embody a sense of shared values, while amiable, laid-back vibes pervade the sessions overall. Bibb’s Delta-rooted playing is complemented by the subtle lines that Koite unreels on guitar, banjo, and ukulele. The wide-eyed expectancy Bibb brings to “On My Way to Bamako” and “Tombouctou” is mirrored by the mood of gratitude infusing Koite’s “L.A.” Prayerful numbers like “Send Us Brighter Days” and “With My Maker I Am One” lend a spiritual tone to the proceedings. The theme of human unity is underscored by the duo’s bilingual interpretation of Bibb’s signature tune “Needed Time.” There are gentle interludes like the traditional African tune “Nani Le,” as well as thoughtful social commentaries like “We Don’t Care.” Fresh interpretations of Bob Dylan’s “Blowin’ in the Wind” and the blues standard “Goin’ Down the Road Feelin’ Bad” bring the album to a life-affirming close.

“Rainbow People” means more than just an LP. It’s Eric Bibb’s debut album, gathering of friends and musical ideas that go together and express one thing above all; the joy of knowing each other. Hearing the sounds of jazz, blues, African, Latin-American and classical music on the same album is a naturally good thing – a kind of rainbow.

As its title implies, this is a spiritually based collaboration from three distinct — even disparate — yet surprisingly harmonious voices. Mostly, but not entirely acoustic, the trio of rootsy singers trade lead vocals on smooth jazz/blues (“Bessie’s Dream”), folk-blues (“Good Stuff”), Delta blues (“Rolling Log”), gospel (an a cappella version of Sister Rosetta Tharpe’s “Rock Daniel”), and combinations of those genres. On paper it sounds scattershot, but in actuality this is a thoughtfully paced combination of styles, united by three affecting voices. Eric Bibb’s smoother Keb’ Mo’ approach meshes surprisingly well with Rory Block’s more penetrating Delta croon and Maria Muldaur’s sassy, sexy, throaty growl. Covers of Jimmy Reed’s “Little Rain” and Bob Dylan’s “Gotta Serve Somebody” with Bibb taking lead, and Bill Withers’ “Lean on Me” (Muldaur and Block) show the disc’s wide stylistic range. A musical seminar in how diverse types of music interbreed and influence each other, all three singers are in the moment with nobody commanding the spotlight for long. The barrelhouse honky tonk piano blues of Block’s “Travelin’ Woman Blues” incorporates both Muldaur’s and Block’s singing in the album’s most convincing duet. Only a few songs such as the closing title track feature all three voices, and the album might have benefited from more instances where they all contribute. But the vocalist’s exuberance soars from the grooves and creates a lively yet relaxed vibe that’s contagious and often thrilling. The result is a cohesive, soulful, and powerful disc that will hopefully inspire listeners to find more material from each of its headliners.

With Migration Blues eric Bibb reminds us that if we look at the history of the world we discover that we all have migrants among our ancestors. Eric also draws a parallel between the former African American sharecroppers leavind the brutal segregation and economic misery of the rural South for the industrial cities of the North and the current migratory movement to Europe of the refugees from the war-torn countries of the Middle East and Africa World.

Migration Blues will certainly be considered one of Eric Bibb’s major albums due to the high quality of the songwriting, the raw emotion delivered by Eric’s voice, the richness of the orchestration (despite the sobriety) and the seriousness and topicality of its main theme.

This album took shape when the producer Philippe Langlois, the guitarist Eric Bibb, and the harmonica player Jean-Jacques Milteau joined forces to record a tribute to the legendary Lead Belly. The latter, still too little known by the public at large, is the source for a multitude of timeless covers and compositions from the likes of Nirvana, The Animals, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Bob Dylan… and many more! Many of the songs here are from live interpretations, performed both with and without and audience, which adds a palpable freshness to the disc. Accompanied by a strong battery attack and an acoustic bass, indulge in the singing and snapping guitars of Eric Bibb and the delicate harmonica lines of Milteau; they chime in perfect cohesion. The result is a joyous album of concentrated blues and high-quality folk.

With this new effort, Eric Bibb gives a personal vision of today’s world in his own poetic and contemporary way. Born and raised in New York, Bibb has traveled the planet extensively. He describes the people of this earth at length here, conjuring their conflicts and hardships, as well as their compassion, tolerance and empathy. “Jericho Road” was produced by Glen Scott, a young Englishman originally from Jamaica endowed with outstanding talent and creativity. Scott’s lavish musical arrangements and attention to sound make this new recording an exceptionally fine production. Eric gives a whole new meaning to the blues of the 21st Century, proving that the genre remains as lively and relevant as ever. Jericho Road is an event in itself, and a superlative album.

Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Dixiefrog

Bringing groovy blues with an African flavour, Eric Bibb returns to soothe our souls with his deep, smooth voice on this colourful record, Global Griot. Alongside the Malian Habib Koité and the Senegalese Solo Cissokho, he brings us 25 songs from the borders of gospel and reggae (Wherza Money At). This is an album that takes you on a journey, and the destination is clear: Africa. The word “Griot” in the title refers to African musicians, and more precisely to the “traditional communicators”. The word is rich with history and Eric Bibb treats it with respect. Be they Americans, Europeans or Jamaicans, the artists brought together on this album manage to include all manner of influences. The album also has a folky side and many of the themes of the album focus on human beings. Global Griot echoes the sound of the album he recorded in collaboration with his wife Ulrika, Pray Sing Love. The New Yorker never tires of musical declarations of love, or indeed of political songs, here he covers Big Bill Broonzy, Black Brown and White. He performs this alongside Harrison Kennedy and the pair give a terrifically lively rendition of the track.  – Clara Bismuth

Eric Bibb – Dear America (2021) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

Eric Bibb – Dear America (2021)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 52:03 minutes | 981 MB | Genre: Blues
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Provogue

The scion of a musical dynasty (his father was folk-singer Leon Bibb and his uncle was jazzman John Lewis), Eric Bibb released his first album almost 50 years ago. He grew up in the blues, but he has long been much, much more than simply a bluesman. He has travelled and lived extensively outside the United States, sought inspiration in African music, and refined his technique through contact with other styles and musicians. Dear America, released in the year of his 70th birthday, is a kind of return to his roots. This is a historian’s album, which visits some tragic pages of Afro-American history in song. Musically, this is a record rooted in blues, soul and gospel choirs. These are genres so old and well-worn that one wonders how musicians can still draw life from them without falling into clich’es. But Eric Bibb succeeds, and with young-at-heart verve, he transforms this return to the roots into an elixir of youth. He does not handle this old music like an antiques dealer, but like a craftsman or a sculptor who is perpetually dazzled by the forms that emerge from the raw material. The picking is soft, the tempo laid-back, and all the tracks here are bathed in a sober elegance. He moves from blues to acoustic soul or folk with a unique fluidity that he shares with his musicians, including drummer Steve Jordan, bassist Ron Carter, guitarist Eric Gales, singers Shaneeka Simon and Lisa Mills. This is an album of American music by a zen master of the form. – St’ephane Deschamps

Eric Bibb’s new album is both a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, and a homage to the original “blues people,” the Afro-American creators of a style celebrated today as part of the common heritage of mankind. “Blues People” is an album voluntarily bare, haunted by the spirit of the blues. Many good friends managed to join the recording sessions and brought their own contributions. They include The Blind Boys Of Alabama, Taj Mahal, J.J. Milteau, Popa Chubby, Ruthie Foster, Harrison Kennedy, Leyla McCalla, André De Lange and Guy Davis.
