Popularity George Michael is phenomenal for a quarter century. Suffice it to say that seven of his albums have reached the first place in England, and the total circulation records exceeded 100 million copies. Tour 2008, which was held in support of the collection of “25” was the first singer’s world tour in 15 years, and the tickets were dispersed in a few days. During the tour, Michael spoke to more than 2 million viewers, but it was not enough. Summer of 2008 was appointed two additional concerts in London, held in «Earls Court» August 24 and 25. Material from these presentations and formed the basis of publications released in 2009 on DVD and Blu-ray.

Gestating for a long time — at least two years, although George Michael hasn’t released an album for a decade — Symphonica is a curious way for the pop singer to return to action. A live album recorded on his 2011-2012 tour, Symphonica showcases a singer on the supper club circuit, trading in a few of his big hits, all middle-brow favorites (“Praying for Time,” “One More Try,” “A Different Corner”) and spending a lot of time on songs the audience knows and love, whether it’s Ewan MacColl’s “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face,” Anthony Newley’s “Feeling Good,” or the American Popular Songbook standard “My Baby Just Cares for Me.” Michael does indulge in some personal favorites — —he tackles Terence Trent D’Arby’s “Let Her Down Easy” and the deep Elton John track “Idol” — but the context is something familiar: a popular singer luxuriating in a symphonic setting. He doesn’t push the limits of this template, choosing to enjoy the lush surroundings, so this winds up slightly anti-climactic: Michael is in good form but he’s coasting, doing no more than he needs to, satisfying fans without surprising.

Listen Without Prejudice is an intimate and beautiful album that employs aching balladry to despair for a conflict-torn world (“Praying for Time”, “Mothers Pride”) and fuses hushed folk with James Brown to mourn lost love (“Waiting for That Day”). Even the gloriously uplifting gospel-dance sound of “Freedom! ’90” houses a cautionary tale about fame’s soul-sapping effects. Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1 is the second solo studio album by the English singer-songwriter George Michael, released on 3 September 1990 by Columbia Records (Epic Records in the UK). The album was Michael’s final album of all-new material on Columbia until 2004’s Patience. Listen Without Prejudice was a stark departure from Michael’s previous album, 1987’s Faith, with largely acoustic instrumentation and a sombre intensity in many of the lyrics and melodies. While the album topped the UK Albums Chart, disappointing sales in the United States led to Michael’s legal battles against Sony Music, in which he accused the corporation of not fully supporting him as an artist.
Listen Without Prejudice was reissued across a number of formats on 20 October 2017 and again topped the UK Albums Chart, 27 years after it first reached number one on the chart.
