Red Norvo was one of jazz’s early vibraphonists. An unusual star during the swing era, he helped establish the xylophone, marimba and vibraphone as jazz instruments. His career began in Chicago in 1925 with a band called “The Collegians”. He subsequently played with many other bands, including, Benny Goodman, Charlie Barnet, and Woody Herman. Norvo had a quieter yet no-less fluent style than Lionel Hampton. He recorded with Mildred Bailey (his wife), Billie Holiday, Dinah Shore and Frank Sinatra. Norvo and his wife were known as “Mr. and Mrs. Swing.”

This 2xHD remastered album contains recordings from two sessions made in New York, NY and Hollywood, CA

Veteran pianist Hank Jones is hardly slowing down at the age of 87, as heard on this beautifully recorded session in early 2006. With drummer Jimmy Cobb (who sticks to brushes) and Christian McBride rounding out his potent trio, Jones keeps old warhorses like “On Green Dolphin Street” fresh, giving ample space to his partner and adding a humorous detour into Billy Strayhorn’s “Rain Check.” Other highlights include his elegant treatment of his late brother Thad’s timeless ballad “A Child Is Born” and a hard driving take of Charlie Parker’s “Confirmation.” McBride shows depth beyond his years with strong accompaniment and swinging solos. This Hybrid Super Audio CD, recorded without any gimmickry such as remixing or compression, enables the listener to enjoy these intimate performances as if sitting in the studio with the players.

„Although Tommy Flanagan tended to refer to two-piano dates as a gimmick, that’s hardly the case during this superb 1983 concert in Germany with Hank Jones. The two pianists have the kind of feel for one another’s playing that avoids the crash of egos and instead inspires the give and take necessary for each performance to reach its full potential. Immediately, the two veterans captivate their audience with a stunning aggressive improvisation upon Charlie Parker’s ‘Relaxin’ at Camarillo,’ then immediately quiet them with a soft, lyrical interpretation of the gorgeous ballad ‘In a Sentimental Mood.’ They’re clearly having a lot of fun during their upbeat waltz through the popular ballad ‘Someday My Prince Will Come.’ The rest of the concert is every bit as fulfilling, with an inspired treatment of ‘Rockin’ in Rhythm’ getting the nod as the highlight of a memorable evening.“ (Ken Dryden, AMG)

George Shearing and Hank Jones have always been very well-rounded pianists fully capable of playing unaccompanied solos. Their unique matchup as a two-piano duo on this Concord release works surprisingly well for the two pianists manage to stay out of each other’s way and the ensembles are not overcrowded. The pianists tackle colorful material including “Angel Eyes,” and Thelonious Monk’s “I Mean You,” an original apiece, Mary Lou Williams’s “Lonely Moments,” “Star Eyes” and “Confirmation,” and the results are swinging and tasteful. This somewhat obscure Concord release is worth investigating.

This is a superb Hank Jones date; highly recommended for fans of piano trio music. In 1955, most jazz pianists were immersed in the school of Bud Powell. Jones is unique in that he developed his harmonic concept prior to Powell’s ascendancy and the bebop revolution, but went on to fully assimilate the melodic vocabulary of bop. He has synthesized important elements from many great players into his own recognizable style. His versatility is evident on these eight selections. Jones plays swinging bop lines on his original “We’re All Together” and his blues head, “Odd Number,” displays the Powell influence most clearly. Upon hearing the delicate touch and harmonic subtlety with which Jones plays ballads – including “We Could Make Such Beautiful Music Together,” “Cyrano,” “There’s a Small Hotel,” and “My Funny Valentine” – one can imagine that a young Bill Evans was quite familiar with this recording. Jones’ mastery of block chords is particularly impressive. Occasionally reissued under drummer Kenny Clarke’s name, this important Savoy session also includes bassist Wendell Marshall, who had spent the previous seven years with Duke Ellington’s band.
