The Karajan Official Remastered Edition contains official remastering of the finest recordings the Austrian conductor made for EMI between 1946 and 1984, which are now a jewel of the Warner Classics catalog.

For many, Herbert von Karajan (1908-1989) hailed early in his career as Das Wunder Karajan (The Karajan Miracle) and known in the early 1960s as the music director of Europe remains the ultimate embodiment of the maestro. The release of the Karajan Official Remastered Edition over the first half of 2014 marks the 25th anniversary of the conductors death in July 1989 at the age of 81.

He was closely associated with EMI for the majority of his recording career (specifically from 1946 to 1960 and then again from 1969 to 1984). EMIs legendary producer Walter Legge sought him out in Vienna just after World War II and the long relationship that ensued embraced recordings with the Vienna Philharmonic, the Philharmonia (the orchestra founded by Legge), the Berlin Philharmonic (of which Karajan became conductor for life in 1955), La Scala, Milan, and the Orchestre de Paris.

Herbert von Karajan (German: [‘hbt fn ‘karajan] (About this soundlisten); born Heribert Ritter[a] von Karajan; 5 April 1908 – 16 July 1989) was an Austrian conductor. He was principal conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic for 34 years. During the Nazi era, he debuted at the Salzburg festival, with the Vienna Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic, and during the Second World War he conducted at the Berlin State Opera. Generally regarded as one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century, he was a controversial but dominant figure in European classical music from the mid-1950s until his death. Part of the reason for this was the large number of recordings he made and their prominence during his lifetime. By one estimate, he was the top-selling classical music recording artist of all time, having sold an estimated 200 million records.

The best recording of Don Quixote I’ve ever heard, and this work has had some fine recordings. Karajan, always a superb Strauss conductor, shapes a coherent narrative such that one’s attention never flags. The conductor, orchestra, and recording combine to make the contributions of various instruments clear and telling. Indeed, the sound must be close to peerless. Especially noteworthy is the clear separation between orchestra and the two solo instruments, cello and violin. Often despite the best efforts of performers and engineers, those solos get lost in the orchestral sound. Not here. Such splendid perfomances as Kempe and Previn remain joys to listen to, Previn’s especially with rich, luscious sound. But no recording I’ve heard gets everything so right as this magnificent recording.

(FonoForum)

Karajan takes real care to bring clarity and definition to music that in the wrong hands can leave you wallowing in emotional treacle . . . His graphic handling of orchestral texture brings the world of “Cavalleria” to life, with every nuance of light and colour brought into focus in the playing of La Scala’s orchestra. Cossotto is quite outstanding, surely one of the finest mezzos on record. Here she sings with exquisite pathos and dramatic intensity . . . [Bergonzi] brings instead an elegance that captures something of Turiddu’s duplicitous charm . . . Record Review / Ashutosh Khandekar, BBC Music Magazine (London) / 01. April 2011

The Austrian Herbert von Karajan (Salzbourg 1908 – Anif 1989) still embodies the musical conductor like no other. In charge of the Berlin Philharmonic for 35 years (1955-1989), Karajan helped to elevate the orchestra to a level of global prestige. Throughout his career, he methodically diversified his repertoire: from Beethoven, Brahms and Bruckner to Verdi, Wagner and Strauss…
