A child prodigy-turned-visionary keyboard artist, Japanese pianist Hiromi returns a decade after her solo debut with Spectrum, a diverse and satisfying collection signalling how much she has spread her artistic wings during the past ten years. With blazing technique the opening track “Kaleidoscope” is a pyrotechnical display of the pianist’s stunningly nimble meld of mind and digits. The world’s multi-year experience with COVID has wrought profound changes in the worlds of music. Touring ceased, venues shuttered, and musicians were financially ruined. For those who survived it has not surprisingly become a time and a tangle of emotions to be parsed, worked through and ultimately expressed in music. Written to represent her “emotional journey” through the continuing pandemic, the four-part Silver Lining Suite amply shows that being indoors only inspired a deeper ambition in incredibly gifted pianist Hiromi Uehara. Never easy to pin down or explain, Hiromi’s restless inventiveness, dynamic sense that musical boundaries are artificial, and almost limitless gifts on piano have led her to create music that mixes classical, jazz, rock and anything else that she can think of into an original whole—always led by her vast mastery on the keyboard. Best of all, she is also a prolific composer. Here she leads a string quartet organized by Tatsuo Nishie, concertmaster of the New Japan Philharmonic in a performance of an extended piece she composed while under lockdown. Nishie is joined by violinist Sohei Birmann, violist Meguna Naka, and cellist Wataru Mukai—the latter given the task of playing pizzicato walking bass lines.

Time seems pretty well tamed by clocks, calendars, and history books. But what do we really know about time?

The elusive nature of time figures prominently in Japanese keyboardist Hiromi Uehara’s March 27, 2007, release, Time Control. Collectively praised by critics and embraced by fans on both sides of the Pacific, it’s clear that Hiromi’s undeniable talents continue to grow and evolve. “I was inspired to write these pieces because my life is so hectic,” she says. “I regularly feel jet- lagged and always seem to be in a different time zone. I find myself at airports with more time to think about time, and I often wonder, ‘Am I controlling time or is time controlling me? Why do some days feel shorter than others?’”

Her ninth CD as a leader, Alive, heralds the return of Hiromi’s Trio Project, featuring contrabass guitarist Anthony Jackson (Steely Dan, Paul Simon, Michel Camilo, The O’Jays and Chick Corea) and drummer Simon Phillips (Toto, The Who, Judas Priest, David Gilmour and Jack Bruce). This terrific triad, which DownBeat magazine proclaimed as “one of the most exciting groups working in any genre today,” first formed in 2011 and recorded their first CD, Voice, that year, followed by Move in 2013. On Alive, Phillips’ powerful, yet poetic percussion and Jackson’s flowing, glow-in-the-dark basslines beautifully buoy and support Hiromi’s ingenious and impassioned improvisations. Her evocative and expansive compositions evoke the myriad moods and mysteries of life and reveal the soulful, syncopated simpatico of her thrilling threesome.
