Janis Joplin is one of the most revered and iconic of all rock & roll singers, a tragic and misunderstood figure who thrilled millions of listeners and blazed new creative trails before her death in 1970 at age 27. With “Janis: Little Girl Blue,” Oscar-nominated director Amy J. Berg (“Deliver Us from Evil,” “West of Memphis”) examines Joplin’s story in depth, presenting an intimate, insightful portrait of a complicated, driven, often beleaguered artist.
Joplin’s own words tell much of the film’s story through a series of letters she wrote home over the years, many made public here for the first time (and read by Southern-born indie rock star/actor Chan Marshall, aka Cat Power). Joplin was a powerhouse when she sang, and her recordings have never left the radio or the hearts of rock fans. Berg’s “Janis: Little Girl Blue” offers new understanding of a bright, complex woman whose meteoric rise and sudden demise changed music forever and continues to influence female musicians.

Janis Joplin’s second masterpiece (after Cheap Thrills), Pearl was designed as a showcase for her powerhouse vocals, stripping down the arrangements that had often previously cluttered her music or threatened to drown her out. Thanks also to a more consistent set of songs, the results are magnificent – given room to breathe, Joplin’s trademark rasp conveys an aching, desperate passion on funked-up, bluesy rockers, ballads both dramatic and tender, and her signature song, the posthumous number one hit “Me and Bobby McGee.” The unfinished “Buried Alive in the Blues” features no Joplin vocals – she was scheduled to record them on the day after she was found dead. Its incompleteness mirrors Joplin’s career; Pearl’s power leaves the listener to wonder what else Joplin could have accomplished, but few artists could ask for a better final statement.

The legendary 1964 rehearsal collaboration receives its first official issue . Restoration and Mastering by Grammy?-winning engineer Michael Graves . Packaging contains rare photos plus liner notes from Jorma Kaukonen Jorma Kaukonen (later of Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna) met a singer named Janis Joplin at a hootenanny in San Jose, California, in the fall of 1962. Over the following years, Janis would call on Jorma to accompany her at gigs. As they continued to play together, the Bay Area was changing musically and developing into the legendary San Francisco scene to which both Janis and Jorma would be integral. During a rehearsal for a show in North Beach, Jorma started his reel-to-reel machine to capture what they were working on. For decades, this recording was the stuff of legend, with inferior, multi-generational transfers making their way through select collector’s circles. Now, for the very first time, it is available officially, with the blessing and cooperation of both the Janis Joplin Estate and Jorma Kaukonen. The Legendary Typewriter Tape: 6/25/64 Jorma’s House contains this legendary recording, featuring Restoration and Mastering from acclaimed, Grammy?-winner Michael Graves. The tracks include Joplin on vocals, Kaukonen on guitar, and Jorma’s wife Margareta typing away intermittently in the background. This may have just been a rehearsal, but it is so much more. Featuring Joplin originals, as well as blues classics, The Legendary Typewriter Tape is an intimate glimpse into two major artists at the beginnings of what would become highly influential careers. Cheap Thrills is the band’s sophomore album and the final to feature Janis Joplin as lead vocalist. The band members were pioneers of the psychedelic era and their 1968 classic is widely considered one of the greatest masterpieces of the genre. It features the hits “Piece Of My Heart,” “Summertime” and “Ball And Chain.” It is included on Rolling Stone’s “500 Greatest Albums of All Time” and listed in the book, 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.
