Legendary drummer Kenny Clarke compared Jean-Luc Ponty to Dizzy Gillespie. Fellow violinist Stuff Smith marveled, “He plays violin like Coltrane plays saxophone.” Born in 1942, the French violinist Jean-Luc Ponty transported jazz violin playing into the world of modern jazz. On Frank Zappa’s urging, Ponty moved to the States in 1970. Over the next years he toured with Zappa, the Mahavishnu Orchestra, and Chick Corea’s “Return to Forever”.

By 1982, jazz violinist Jean-Luc Ponty had established an enviable reputation as a pioneer in jazz-rock and jazz fusion. He began as a young bebop player in the late 1950s with little interest in becoming another swing or gypsy style violinist. It was the “sheets of sound” music of John Coltrane that spoke loudest to him. By the early 1970s Ponty was recording and touring with rock composer Frank Zappa, and playing with John McLaughlin’s Mahavishnu Orchestra, as well as releasing his own music on Atlantic Records. He bought himself a sequencer and synthesizer and carried them around while traveling so he could record new ideas. As ever, he was ready to experiment with new techniques to capture ideas for projects he was planning. The end result surprised and intrigued him.

For his technique alone Jean-Luc Ponty would be acclaimed as one of the greatest violinists in jazz history, but his recordings reveal additional dimensions to his talent. Released 35 years ago this month, OPEN MIND is a perfect example; the self-produced set presents the man’s virtuoso string work with adventurous electric backing including some hypnotic synthesizer arrangements. Though guitarist George Benson and keyboardist Chick Corea appear on a couple of tracks, Ponty himself is responsible for most of what you hear, playing several instruments and programming rhythm tracks. For all the electronics involved, the feel is warm, upbeat and melodic across these six originals from the titular opener to the closing “Intuition.” Fusion fans with an OPEN MIND will find this 1984 Atlantic collection irresistible.

The Montreux Jazz Festival is notorious for bringing out the best performances from even the most seasoned pros, but the 1994 performance of Al DiMeola (guitars), Jean-Luc Ponty (violin), and Stanley Clarke (bass), is by far one for the ages.

An impressive performance is made even more so upon the confession of DiMeola, who states these 3 virtuosos have not performed the material together yet. The trio performs 7 songs together and each has their own solo in the middle, making this performance a must-have for any jazz aficionado.

Legendary drummer Kenny Clarke compared Jean-Luc Ponty to Dizzy Gillespie. Fellow violinist Stuff Smith marveled, “He plays violin like Coltrane plays saxophone.” Born in 1942, the French violinist transported jazz violin playing into the world of modern jazz. On Frank Zappa’s urging, Ponty moved to the States in 1970. Over the next years he toured with Zappa, the Mahavishnu Orchestra, and Chick Corea’s “Return to Forever”. On the 1967 Sunday Walk the band saunters through two blues, a waltz, and a standard before reaching Suite for Claudia which begins at a blistering pace with Ponty’s saxophone-like “brilliance and fire” playing. It then settles into a medium swing groove with Wolfgang Dauner’s infectious piano play followed by a smoldering Ponty. Daniel Humair’s crisp drum solo segues into a heart-felt waltz. After all, this was written for Ponty’s wife. Ponty is here with a group of Europe’s finest at their youthful best. The way they play, it’s all a walk in the park…

Can’t find details about this live album but it’s obviously from Cosmic Messenger Tour 1978 or 1979. Reason I ordered this album is: I wanted to hear how he sounded on concert in that time. I was on Enigmatic Ocean Tour (with Allan Holdsworth) concert in Zagreb Lisinski Hall, a year earlier than this concert, and this was the worst cacophony of sounds I ever heard on concert. To blame was croatian sound team on mixing table. And I adore Ponty in that time who was in his musical prime so you can imagine my disappointment. This one sound ok, not fantastic but ok.

Jean-Luc Ponty ‎- Open Mind (1984) [Original FR Pressing] {Vinyl Rip 24Bit/96khz}

Jean-Luc Ponty ‎- Open Mind
Vinyl | LP Cover (1:1) | FLAC + cue | 24bit/96kHz | 847mb
Mastered At Future Disc Mastering
Label: Polydor/823581-1 | Release: 1984 | Genre: Jazz-Rock

Excellent addition to any prog rock music collection.
Jean-Luc Ponty plays himself some really modern keyboards here, creating very atmospheric textures, rather urban, often flirting with a jazz-New Age style. To enhance the modern aspect of the music, Ponty plays a VERY “bottom” synth bass, which gives very much color, personality and depth to the music. Ponty is so much involved in the keyboards that it seems his electric violin almost becomes a secondary instrument here: his electric violin is however still very present, but it seems to be less monolithic and to merge more with the rest of the music: sometimes, it participates to the rhythm itself, or it is just simply played with less speed, focusing more on the sound or on the ambience itself. Chick Corea plays some good & nervous keyboards solos! The overall sound is very clean, fresh and modern. The complex keyboards exploration on “Orbital encounters” is absolutely impressive. The echoed atmosphere created with the violin sound on “Intuition” is really breathtaking! Every track is at least very good, so that this record is among his best ones.

Jean-Luc Ponty ‎- Imaginary Voyage (1976) [1977 US Pressing] {Vinyl Rip 24Bit/96khz}

Jean-Luc Ponty ‎- Imaginary Voyage
Vinyl | LP Cover (1:1) | FLAC + cue | 24bit/96kHz | 830mb
Mastered By George Piros
Label: Atlantic/SD 19136 | Release: 1976 | This Issue: 1977 | Genre: Jazz-Rock

Jean-Luc Ponty reaches a musical peak by releasing this excellent fusion record. Looking at the new line-up here, the talent and reliability of the musicians is not questionable: Mark Craney (Jethro Tull’s “A”) plays very fast and EXTREMELY elaborated drums. Tom Fowler (Frank Zappa) plays a restless, complex and very melodic bass. Daryl Stuermer is absolutely majestic, playing a beautiful acoustic guitar in unison with Ponty’s VERY melodic electric violin. Stuermer shows here that he can also be a decent electric guitar player, as reveals his light wah-wah solo on “Tarantula”: however, we feel here his solo sound still not comparable to David Gilmour’s “Money” solo. However, he is an EXCELLENT acoustic guitar player, and he should stay in that department. Allan Zavod, on keyboards, does an honest job, although he rather stays in the background.
On side 2, the high-speed recordings in “Imaginary Voyage Part 1” are absolutely breathtaking: the comparison with Yes’ “Sound Chaser” is inevitable. The epic track “Imaginary Voyage” may be uninterruptedly listened without any problem, although Stuermer’s electric guitar solos have nothing really spectacular.
