Live archive collection. This recording has never before been released or even bootlegged. It captures the Jimi Hendrix Experience at a unique moment in their illustrious career. Before a sold out audience of 17, 000 people, the Experience overwhelmed an unsuspecting audience with a superb show that encompassed his renditions of songs by the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters as well as signature songs such as “Purple Haze” and “The Wind Cries Mary”. Are You Experienced, the group’s debut album, had not yet been released by Jimi’s label Reprise.

One bit of positive fallout from the seemingly endless glut of remastered CD reissues that fill the record store bins each Tuesday is that they sometimes offer an occasion to throw all critical objectivity to the wind. When a recording is an acknowledged classic, a writer generally has but two options — go against the grain to poke holes in its legacy, or celebrate its already known brilliance and hope there’s some piece of previously unavailable insight to be had. Well, The Isley Brothers’ 1973 soul masterpiece 3 + 3, recently cleaned up and put back into circulation by Epic/Legacy, leaves this critic no choice but to follow the path of least resistance and offer three reasons as to why it’s one of the most indisputably amazing R&B records of all time.

Rather than drudging up scandal and outworn hypothesis about his lifestyle and ultimate death, here we look at Hendrix as the master of electric guitar, as told by a selection of the world’s greatest musicians in all new and exclusive interviews. Contributers include Dave Mason (Traffic) Eric Clapton, Mick Taylor, Eric Burdon (The Animals) Paul Rodgers (Bad Company) Ginger Baker (Cream) Bev Bevan (ELO) Stephen Stills (Crosby Stills & Nash) to name but a few. Some were his mentors, some his contemporaries and admirers of his incredible talent, and those who emerged as new talent as a result of his influence. All happy to come forward and explain why Hendrix’s work remains at the zenith of rock music to this day.
• Moving beyond the icon and the myth, this DVD brings alive the images and music that Jimi Hendrix evoked from his very soul, using the instrument as, he put it, his “personal diary” This style evoked a home-grown and raw, uncensored sensuality, which indeed was his nature and that of his music, as if he were his own muse.
• Narrated by Slash (Guns N Roses/Velvet Revolver) a longtime Hendrix acolyte, this film is less a biography than the first film ever to focus on the music itself and the impetus of the master who created it.

After having been released in a couple different configurations (not counting bootlegs), Jimi Hendrix’s performance at the Isle of Wight Festival has been released yet again, and it’s a bit of a mixed bag. Hendrix is plagued by equipment problems and audience expectations, and the entire festival had degenerated into something of a debacle by the time Jimi hit the stage as headliner. There is a loose, at times sloppy, feel to the proceedings, with Hendrix being pretty casual with the lyrics, particularly in “Spanish Castle Magic.” Jimi had long since tired of playing his smash hits, even commenting at one point, “Y’all want to hear all those old songs, man? Damn, man. We’re just trying to get some other things together.” The problem was that much of the new material was under-rehearsed for a live setting, giving some of the newer songs like “Dolly Dagger” more of a jam feel. In addition, Hendrix’s amplifiers are picking up transmissions from radio and security personnel throughout the show, which actually works well on “Machine Gun,” but is distracting elsewhere. That being said, collectors will still be happy with this release. The sound is fantastic, and the packaging and booklet are filled with great photos. Jimi’s guitar playing is superb in spots, and his wonderful sense of humor is on display throughout. The fact is that Hendrix died way too early, so any great-sounding, even mediocre shows will still be celebrated by fans for the moments of brilliance they contain. Band of Gypsys is still the first pick for live Hendrix, but those who crave more will be quite pleased with Blue Wild Angel: Live at the Isle of Wight. –Sean Westergaard

Experience Hendrix announces a brand new collection that couples the brand new feature length documentary Music, Money, Madness . . . Jimi Hendrix In Maui with the accompanying live performances on both audio and video. The film chronicles the Jimi Hendrix Experience s storied visit to Maui, their performance on the dormant lower crater of Haleakala volcano on the island and how the band became ensnared with the ill-fated Rainbow Bridge movie produced by their controversial manager Michael Jeffery. Directed by John McDermott and produced by Janie Hendrix, George Scott and McDermott, the documentary incorporates never before released original footage and new interviews with firsthand participants and key players such as Billy Cox, Eddie Kramer, Warner Bros. executives and several Rainbow Bridge cast members, as well as its director Chuck Wein. The Blu-ray will include the full documentary as well as the 16mm color film shot of the two afternoon performances captured on July 30, 1970 mixed in both stereo and 5.1 surround sound. Also included in the package will be Live In Maui both of the aforementioned sets spread across 2 CDs, newly restored and mixed by longtime Jimi Hendrix engineer Eddie Kramer, and mastered by Bernie Grundman. The 2 sets finds The Experience – Hendrix, Billy Cox on bass, Mitch Mitchell on drums – at the height of its powers playing flawlessly against a stunning natural backdrop. Included are breathtaking renditions of crowd favorites like “Foxey Lady,” “Purple Haze” and Voodoo Child (Slight Return),” as well as then-unreleased songs like “Dolly Dagger” and “Freedom” that showcased the new direction Hendrix was moving toward.

This special DVD presentation of Jimi Hendrix: Electric Church presents the legendary guitarist in full flight at the 1970 Atlanta Pop Festival before the largest US audience of his career.
This critically acclaimed film combines color, 16mm multi-camera footage of Hendrix’s unforgettable July 4, 1970 concert in its original performance sequence together with a new documentary that traces his journey to the festival amidst the dark shadow of civil rights unrest, the unrelenting toll of the Vietnam War and a burgeoning festival culture that drew together young people across the country who were inspired by the Woodstock festival.
The film details Hendrix’s integral role in drawing nearly 500,000 people to his Electric Church- a dusty, scorching hot pecan orchard in Byron, Georgia some 100 miles south of Atlanta. Together with Experience drummer Mitch Mitchell and bassist Billy Cox, Jimi skillfully blended favorites such as “Purple Haze,” “All Along The Watchtower,” and “Voodoo Child (Slight Return)” with confident renditions of new songs such as “Freedom” and “Straight Ahead” that had not yet been released on album. As a colorful fireworks display stretched overhead across the night sky, Jimi performed the “Star Spangled Banner” to the wild delight of the massive audience.
The performance footage of the Experience has been carefully restored from the original negative in high definition. The audio soundtrack includes stereo and 5.1 surround sound mixes by Eddie Kramer directly from the original master tapes.
This expanded DVD features three songs not seen in the television broadcast. This includes, “Red House,” “Freedom” and a special presentation of “Room Full Of Mirrors” that features all of the existing performance footage combined with never before seen photographs of the Atlanta performance.

People, Hell & Angels is a new album of twelve never before released Jimi Hendrix studio recordings. This special album showcases the legendary guitarist working outside of the original Jimi Hendrix Experience trio. Beginning in 1968, Jimi Hendrix grew restless, eager to develop new material with old friends and new ensembles. Outside the view of a massive audience that had established the Experience as rock’s largest grossing concert act and simultaneously placed two of his albums together in the US Top 10 sales chart, Jimi was busy working behind the scenes to craft his next musical statement.

Well, this is something serious Hendrix collectors have been waiting for. Band of Gypsys famously played a total of four shows 12/31/69 and 1/1/70 at the Fillmore East (two shows each night). This is the complete first set from the first night; their debut live show. Although the original Band of Gypsys album was compiled from the second night, it wasn’t because there weren’t amazing performances to choose from on the first night. The first couple songs are a bit rough around the edges, but when Jimi goes deep blues with “Hear My Train a Comin’,” he really starts feeling it and turns in an absolutely amazing version (that’s why it was previously released on Band of Gypsys 2 and Live at the Fillmore East). “Machine Gun” is another stunner. There are significant differences to the lyrics, and the structure of the song is different as well (Billy Cox says both Jimi and Buddy Miles were doing things that weren’t done in rehearsals). “Bleeding Heart” is another amazing blues performance leading into two songs that were almost never performed live: “Earth Blues” and “Burning Desire.” Throughout the set, the band is absolutely locked in. They aren’t just playing; they’re clearly listening to each other and Hendrix turns in some scorching guitar. The most interesting thing might be the realization of how much of these sets and songs was improvised by the band, as shown by the differences in “Machine Gun” from night to night. Eddie Kramer deserves credit for a truly excellent mix (and probably some judicious editing on “Changes”). It’s not really fair to compare Machine Gun to Band of Gypsys since one is a largely unedited complete performance and the other is the best cuts selected from a couple shows. That said, there are performances here that rival those of the original Band of Gypsys album, and hearing Jimi on his game with great sound will always be welcomed.

The 1967 debut full-length studio release by the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Newly remastered by Bernie Grundman from the original analog master tapes, the disc contains the mono and stereo mixes of this historic album. This is pure DSD sound to applaud!

When first released in 1967 in the U.S., this album turned the music world upside down as Hendrix showed everyone exactly what it meant to be “experienced.” This SACD returns to the original 11-song version that was originally released in August 1967. It contains such eternal classics as “Hey Joe,” “Purple Haze,” “The Wind Cries Mary”, “Fire”, and the title song, whose backward drum and guitar tracks and otherworldly guitar work still sound innovative almost a half-century later.

This archival mother lode gathers the four complete sets of music Jimi Hendrix and his then-new Band of Gypsys played at the Fillmore East in New York on December 31, 1969 and January 1, 1970. So…there’s some guitar. Lots and lots of guitar, some of it initially released on the Band of Gypsys album but presented here in clearer fidelity. There are mind expanding, status-quo-smashing guitar ad-libs, machine-gun precise rhythm guitar riffs, and passages that start out in a mood of hazy reflection, only to swell into fits of heavy, snarling agitation.
