At Club Baby Grand is a live album by the American jazz organist Jimmy Smith, recorded at Club “Baby Grand” in Wilmington, Delaware, in 1956 and released in two volumes on the Blue Note label.
The AllMusic review by Steve Leggett states:
“It’s all Jimmy Smith in full flight, bubbling over with cascading notes and breathless detours, and if his studio work is generally more structured and considered (but only a little more so), this set shows him in what was his natural habitat, astounding an audience in a small club. Bailey keeps up with things and Schwartz gets a word in now and then, but this is Smith’s show all the way”.

Compared to his earlier Blue Note recordings, organist Jimmy Smith’s outings for Verve are not as strong from a jazz standpoint. Certainly his renditions of the “Theme from Joy House,” “The Cat” and the “Main Title from The Carpetbaggers” are not all that significant. However, this disc has some tasteful arrangements for the big band by Lalo Schifrin and some good playing by the great organist on a variety of other blues-oriented material. Also the combination of organ with a big band is sometimes quite appealing, making this album worth picking up despite its commercial tracks.

Heres the fabulous Jimmy Smith playing Hammond B3 & driving a top notch band along. The title track is drenched in the blues, & after the theme statement Smith plays a superb 2.5 mins solo. Then of course there is Kenny Burrell on Guitar & Stanley Turrentine on Tenor Sax who are no slouches themselves. On “When I grow too old to dream” Jimmy Smith lets Turrentine take the 1st solo & after a subtle start to his Sax solo he builds up quite a head of steam. After a short Smith solo Turrentine is back for more with another solo. Its that sort of album. I’m guessing that they were having great fun in the studio when they recorded this. The rest of the album maintains the same high standard of the 1st 2 tracks. The album was recorded in 1960 &, of course, has another of those classic Blue Note album covers. The original sleeve notes by Ira Gitler give plenty of background information on the album including how the album cover came about. This great recording was cited in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.

Midnight Special is a perfect complement to Back at the Chicken Shack, which was recorded the same day. Organist Jimmy Smith, tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine, and guitarist Kenny Burrell always make for a potent team, and with drummer Donald Bailey completing the group, the quartet digs soulfully into such numbers as the groovin’ “Midnight Special,” “Jumpin’ the Blues,” and “One O’Clock Jump.” Highly recommended.

The Sermon is one of Jimmy Smith’s classics which revolutionized the organ and popularized the instrument in a jazz context. Smith turns the organ into almost an ensemble itself. He plays walking bass lines and chordal accompaniment with his left hand, solos with his right hand. Smith fuses R&B, blues and gospel influences with bebop references and devices into a jubilant, attractive sound that many others immediately absorbed before following in his footsteps. These sessions, recorded in 1957 and 1958 with two different all-star bands, include trumpeter Lee Morgan, alto saxophonists George Coleman and Lou Donaldson, guitarists Kenny Burrell and Eddie McFadden and drummer Art Blakey.

Jimmy Smith wasn’t the first organ player in jazz, but no one had a greater influence with the instrument than he did; Smith coaxed a rich, grooving tone from the Hammond B-3, and his sound and style made him a top instrumentalist in the 1950s and ’60s, while a number of rock and R&B keyboardists would learn valuable lessons from Smith’s example.

In his years with Verve, Jimmy Smith and his jaunty jazz organ made four appearances on Billboard’s hit-singles charts with his recordings of contemporary movie themes. This album, arranged by Lalo Schifrin, features selections from two film scores (including “The Cat,” for which composer Schifrin won a Grammy), some big-band style orchestrations, and plenty of blues. In 1964 this release defied the boundaries of idiom, appealing to a huge audience of jazz, r&b, and pop fans. Screaming film noir horns frame Smith’s jaw-dropping organ runs that practically sweat emotion.
