Without making any fuss, Jakob Bro keeps on being a rare and brilliant guitarist. Sound, space, melody, silence… the freshly-forty-year-old Danish musician isn’t a member of ECM for nothing. With Streams, his second album for Manfred Eicher’s Munich label released in 2016 with bass player Thomas Morgan and drummer Joey Baron, he continued to refine the values and playing style that suit him so well. Under the influence of his peer Bill Frisell, Bro knead some stretched textures and overlaid them with impeccable virtuosity. Two years later, the three men met again for this Bay Of Rainbows album recorded live at New York Jazz Standard in July 2017. A new zero gravity adventure which sees the fascinating relationship between Bro and Morgan continue (Bro calls Morgan his “musical soulmate”). The elder of the trio, Baron, isn’t here by chance, as Bro met Morgan when he was playing in Baron’s band… For this live album, their back-and-forths are whispered and the improvisations are almost like innuendos. This soft restraint never leads to monotony, quite the contrary, it’s what gives the album its radical grace.  – Marc Zisman

Robyn Schulkowsky, New Music’s high priestess of percussion, and Joey Baron, one of the liveliest and most creative drummers in New York’s Downtown scene, come from very different avant-garde traditions. Yet in meshing their talents when they play, categories blur – or rather dissolve. What they bring with them is a kind of oceanic experience. Joey Baron is at home in contemporary jazz. He is one of John Zorn’s favorite drummers and can often be heard alongside Bill Frisell; he played with Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz, Jim Hall and Carmen McRae; and has also spanned the Atlantic in his recent work with Jakob Bro as well as made a CD in duet with Irène Schweizer on Intakt Records. Robyn Schulkowsky moved from the USA to Europe, where she collaborated on and brought to life the works of New Music’s greats. There is hardly a high-ranking avant-garde composer missing from the list: she has worked with Karlheinz Stockhausen, Mauricio Kagel, John Cage, Morton Feldman, Iannis Xenakis, Luciano Berio, Christian Wolff. From the very beginning she was a sound innovator.

Now You Hear Me. Invocative, making the presence of a condition felt, appropriating and relinquishing – everyday reality and ritual. Now. from the liner notes by Bert Noglik

2012 release from the Jazz pianist joined by bassist Steve Swallow and drummer Joey Baron. Wisteria takes a fresh look at several pieces last heard on record in Kuhn’s orchestral Promises Kept collection – “Promises Kept” itself, “Adagio”, “Morning Dew” and “Pastorale”. Kuhn’s compositions, few in number but robust and adaptable, have often lent themselves to quite different interpretations. If anything, these small group versions emphasize the emotional core of the material. Counterbalancing the yearning balladry, the album also includes driving, exciting hard bop (on “A Likely Story”, for instance, and Swallow’s “Good Lookin’ Rookie), Carla Bley’s gospel-tinged “Permanent Wave”, and the Brazilian “Romance” by Dori Caymmi… It’s a varied program which the trio seems to sail through effortlessly, musicians secure in their craft, beyond the need to prove anything, creating the agreeable illusion that this demanding music is playing itself.
