John William Coltrane (September 23, 1926 – July 17, 1967) was an American jazz saxophonist, bandleader and composer. He is among the most influential and acclaimed figures in the history of jazz and 20th-century music.

Born and raised in North Carolina, Coltrane moved to Philadelphia after graduating from high school, where he studied music. Working in the bebop and hard bop idioms early in his career, Coltrane helped pioneer the use of modes and was one of the players at the forefront of free jazz. He led at least fifty recording sessions and appeared on many albums by other musicians, including trumpeter Miles Davis and pianist Thelonious Monk. Over the course of his career, Coltrane’s music took on an increasingly spiritual dimension, as exemplified on his most acclaimed album A Love Supreme (1965) and others.Decades after his death, Coltrane remains influential, and he has received numerous posthumous awards, including a special Pulitzer Prize, and was canonized by the African Orthodox Church.

Whenever previously unreleased material by John Coltrane is discovered, it’s an event. On Evenings at the Village Gate, Coltrane and his superb band are joined by Eric Dolphy, which makes for essential listening.

The album was recorded at the famous Greenwich Village club in 1961 on a single microphone; producer and sound engineer Rich Alderson was checking out the sound system and testing a new mic, not intentionally recording an LP. The instrumental balance on the unearthed tapes isn’t flawless, but that’s a quibble: the overall sound and room tone are good, and the music stuns.

“My Favorite Things” was released in March 1961 and was the first album on which John Coltrane played soprano saxophone in addition to his tenor saxophone. His soprano stars on two of the album’s four songs, including his unforgettable rendition of the title track, written by Rodgers and Hammerstein for the musical The Sound of Music.

An edited version of the 14-minute original was a radio hit that spring. The song’s success helped introduce Coltrane to a wider audience, while the album would inspire later generations of fans. In recognition of the album’s enduring artistic and historical significance, “My Favorite Things” was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998 and awarded gold in 2018.

Rhino celebrates the 60th anniversary of My Favorite Things with Deluxe Editions on vinyl and CD. Each release features new stereo and mono mixes remastered from the original tapes. The mono mix, thought lost, was recently rediscovered and is included here The LPs come in a replica of the original record sleeve with a booklet containing rare photos, ephemera from the era and new liner notes by renowned music journalist/author Ben Ratliff.

In the notes, Ratliff offers his take on “My Favorite Things”: “For a record that so many people have heard, the LP version of ‘My Favorite Things’ goes impressively far; it demonstrably goes somewhere. The juxtaposition of E major and E minor also keeps it ambivalent. It swirls you around; it sometimes gives you the pleasant impression that you don’t know where you are or what song you’re in. It’s a remarkable blend of extremism and tact.

Seldom does a “cash in” turn into a “classic,” but in the case of this 1961 album of outtakes and leftovers by Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane recorded four years prior, that’s exactly what happened. Monk and Coltrane only played together briefly, during the last half of 1957 when Monk’s quartet was in transition and Coltrane himself was juggling a busy solo recording schedule after being booted from Miles’ first great quintet due to his heroin addiction. While Coltrane may have been struggling a bit at the time, Monk was at the height of his powers; over the course of 1957 the pianist would record and release four albums, at least two of which—Monk’s Music and Brilliant Corners—are classics. Of those four, Coltrane was only featured prominently Monk’s Music (his playing on the otherwise solo Thelonious Himself was limited to a single cut), the only album for which they had an official recording session.

This is a prime example of an informal studio jam session in the critical period when John Coltrane was perfecting his ‘sheets of sound’ approach. The emerging tenor star is the focal point in a quintet filled with serendipitous connections. Kenny Burrell, Tommy Flanagan, and Paul Chambers were at the forefront of an emerging generation of young Detroit modernists; Burrell, Coltrane, and Flanagan had proved their compatibility a year earlier on The Cats (OJC-079); and Jimmy Cobb was poised to become a regular partner of Coltrane and Chambers in the Miles Davis sextet. The tenor/guitar duet ‘Why Was I Born?’ is a unique gem in an album filled with assured and eloquent blowing.

Coltrane’s Sun Ship was one of the final and finest chapters in the story of his classic quartet. It features pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Jimmy Garrison and drummer Elvin Jones. The work highlights the saxophonist in transition from the secular (“Dearly Beloved”) to the sacred (“Amen”). Sun Ship: The Complete Session includes every recorded moment from this historic session including alternate takes, conversations between the musicians, their leader and their producer and more than one hour of unreleased music.
