John Coltrane recorded his performance at the Village Vanguard in May 1966, however only the three tracks on this album survived. Coltrane himself plays saxes, clarinet and flute, joined on the front line by Pharoah Sanders on tenor saxophone and flute, accompanied by Alice Coltrane’s wife Alice on piano, bassist Jimmy Garrison, drummer Rashied Ali and percussionist Emanuel Rahim.

John Coltrane’s matchup with singer Johnny Hartman, although quite unexpected, works extremely well. Hartman was in prime form on the six ballads, and his versions of “Lush Life” and “My One and Only Love” have never been topped. Coltrane’s playing throughout the session is beautiful, sympathetic, and still exploratory; he sticks exclusively to tenor on the date. At only half an hour, one wishes there were twice as much music, but what is here is classic, essential for all jazz collections. – Scott Yanow

Interplay for 2 Trumpets and 2 Tenors is an album by Idrees Sulieman, Webster Young, John Coltrane and Bobby Jaspar. The album is credited to “The Prestige All Stars,” a title sometimes used by Prestige Records in the late 1950s to refer to a number of its popular jazz musicians. The album also features Mal Waldron, Kenny Burrell, Paul Chambers and Art Taylor.

Impressions contains two studio tracks paired with two live songs left over from the same November 1961 recordings that yielded John Coltrane’s very successful Live At The Village Vanguard. There was too much material for one LP so the music had to be divided up, with this second album coming a year after the first.

Coltrane expanded his usual lineup for the Village Vanguard performances with the addition of Eric Dolphy on alto saxophone and bass clarinet, which opened up new opportunities for the front line. All About Jazz ranked the set of Village Vanguard recordings at number two on its list of the 10 best live jazz albums.

John Coltrane’s Giant Steps is one of the most important albums in American music history. The 1960 release marked the first time Coltrane ever released an album entirely of his own compositions; the title track is considered an essential part of the jazz canon. To celebrate the album’s 60th anniversary, two new reissues have been announced: a deluxe edition (featuring remastered audio and eight alternate takes) and a super deluxe edition (featuring 20 additional outtakes).

The 60th anniversary editions of Giant Steps arrive digitally, as well as on vinyl and CD, on September 18 (via Rhino). Below, watch a trailer for the reissue and hear a remastered version of “Naima.”

Multiple tracks from Giant Steps are considered jazz standards. “People like to talk about Giant Steps as a test for young horn players and how he’s breaking new ground with some of the pieces,” John Coltrane’s son Ravi Coltrane said in a press release. “But it’s the accessibility that stands out for me. The accessibility, despite how challenging some of the material is. It’s still all very listenable and very joyful. John’s music is a joy to study and to play. It’s a joy to listen to.”

Coltrane’s Sound is an album credited to jazz musician John Coltrane, released in 1964 on Atlantic Records. It was recorded at Atlantic Studios during the sessions for My Favorite Things, assembled after Coltrane had stopped recording for the label and was under contract to Impulse Records.

The album features the classic Coltrane quartet members McCoy Tyner on keys and Elvin Jones on drums, with the addition of Steve Davis on bass, who was later replaced by Reggie Workman.

Coltrane Plays the Blues is an album of music by jazz musician John Coltrane, released in July 1962 on Atlantic Records. It was recorded at Atlantic Studios during the sessions for My Favorite Things, assembled after Coltrane had stopped recording for the label and was under contract to Impulse Records. Like Prestige Records before them, as Coltrane’s fame grew during the 1960s, Atlantic used unissued recordings and released them without either Coltrane’s input or approval.

This set documents the four-night stand by John Coltrane (sax) and his quintet at the Village Vanguard in New York City, November 1 — 5, 1961. Although these are not newly discovered tapes — as the majority of the selections have turned up on no less than five separate releases — their restoration is significant in assessing motifs in Coltrane’s [read: multi-show] live appearances. Coltrane is accompanied by an all-star ensemble of Eric Dolphy (alto sax/bass clarinet), Garvin Bushell (oboe/contrabassoon), Ahmed Abdul-Malik (oud), McCoy Tyner (piano), Jimmy Garrison (bass), Reggie Workman (bass), Elvin Jones (drums), and Roy Haynes (drums). Their presence is as equally vital as Coltrane’s — inspiring as well as informing the dimensions of improvisation. With the knowledge that the entire run was being documented to create some sort of retail document, Coltrane chose nine specific compositions to concentrate on. The choice of material likewise had a tremendous impact on the personnel of the band — evidenced by Bushnell’s contributions during “Spiritual” and Abdul-Malik’s within the context of the extended “India.” Each set bears its own distinctive shading and emphasis. Parties wishing to hear the run in its entirety are encouraged to check out the multi-disc Complete 1961 Village Vanguard Recordings (1997) as there are multiple takes of the same songs. This allows even the most unsophisticated jazz consumer the opportunity to note the difference in the various versions, while contrasting the player’s widely diverse performance styles. The highly recommended box set also includes a nine-panel fold out poster, 48-page liner notes booklet — with a complete discography for the included material — and other ephemera, such as rarely published photographs.
