Rock and Roll Over is the fifth studio album by American rock band Kiss, released in 1976. It was recorded at the Star Theatre, and in order to get the proper drum sound, Peter Criss recorded the drum tracks in a bathroom, communicating via video-link with the rest of the band. Criss’ vocals are featured on the tracks “Baby Driver” and “Hard Luck Woman”. Paul Stanley, who originally wanted the latter song to be sung by Rod Stewart, gave it to Criss, after Gene Simmons insisted Criss sing the song instead.
Although “Hard Luck Woman” did not equal the success of “Beth”, it did become another top 20 single for Kiss. “Calling Dr. Love” would go on to become a concert staple, being played on just about every tour since the album’s release. The cover artwork was created by artist Michael Doret, who worked with Kiss again on their 2009 album Sonic Boom.

Crazy Nights became a worldwide hit for Kiss and a platinum album in the United States. Gene Simmons’ participation on the record was limited by his pursit of outside interests, such as acting and producing other groups. The bulk of the work on Crazy Nights fell to Paul Stanley, whose pop instincts dominated the record. Stanley brought in producer Ron Nevison, who had lately demonstrated a penchant for rejuvenating the careers of aging rock acts like Heart and Ozzy Osbourne by getting them to work with outside pop writers on crossover material. He employed that approach withCrazy Nights, and although it yielded commercial singles like “Crazy Crazy Nights” and the power ballad “Reason to Live,” it also resulted in a synth-drenched record that to some sounded like Kiss was unsuccessfully chasing the styles of much younger bands.
