‘The Ring – An Orchestral Adventure’ is a symphonic version of Wagner’s ‘The Ring of the Nibelung’, arranged by Dutch composer Henk de Vlieger (1953).

De Vlieger chose the most important orchestral excerpts from the cycle and managed to link them together in such a way as to create an unified, single symphonic work.

This recording is the first album of the newly founded orchestra Baltic Sea Philharmonic, made up of current Baltic Sea Youth Philharmonic members and selected alumni.

Kristjan Järvi has ‘earned a reputation as one of the ‘canniest, and most innovative, programmers on the classical scene’ [Reuters]. Curating and conducting his original, genre-fusing projects and festivals with an individual approach and style, his concerts have been proclaimed a ‘life-enhancing experience’ [Herald Scotland].

He realizes his pioneering ideas with his four ensembles: as Music Director of the MDR Leipzig Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Gstaad Festival Orchestra, as creator of his New York-based classical-hip-hop-jazz band Absolute Ensemble, and as Founding Conductor and Music Director of the Baltic Sea Philharmonic.

Kristjan Järvi’s works with some of today’s brightest creative minds, from film directors Tom Tykwer and the Wachowskis, to composers and artists Arvo Pärt, Steve Reich, Tan Dun, Giya Kancheli, Hauschka, Dhafer Youssef, Anoushka Shankar, Max Richter and Esa-Pekka Salonen.

The Baltic Sea Philharmonic is a new force in music and culture. Taking the traditional orchestral model further than it’s gone before, it is creating a social movement, with a vision for the Baltic Sea region that encompasses the environment, culture and society. Baltic Sea Philharmonic brings together leading musicians from the ten countries of the Baltic Sea region – Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Russia and Sweden. Under the direction of Founding Conductor and Music Director Kristjan Järvi, the ensemble performs wide-ranging repertoire from across the region, in celebration of the area’s cultural diversity.

The Baltic Sea Philharmonic’s latest album Sleeping Beauty will be released on 13 November. The new Sony Classical recording sees Kristjan Järvi conducting the orchestra in his own arrangement of Tchaikovksy’s fairytale ballet Sleeping Beauty. Condensing and transforming the near three-hour score into a dramatic symphony of around 70 minutes, Järvi gives new life to this most iconic of theatre music compositions. The musicians of the Baltic Sea Philharmonic performed this version of Sleeping Beauty entirely from memory during their March 2019 ‘Nordic Pulse’ tour of Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Finland and Russia, and the album was recorded in St. Petersburg at the end of the tour. Playing the score by heart transformed the musicians into storytellers who felt like they were telling the fairytale for the first time.

Fashioned from Russian folk tales, the ballet tells the story of Odette, a princess turned into a swan by the curse of evil sorcerer, Odile, the Black Swan. In this new version by conductor Kristjan Järvi, the chronological order of the pieces has been newly arranged to achieve a dramatic arc of tension. The arrangement also brings some new transitions and some new musical endings.

Tchaikovsky’s incidental music to the play “The Snow Maiden” by Alexander Ostrovsky is undoubtedly his principal contribution to this genre. The composer and the poet were jointly commissioned to write the piece by the famous Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, which led to a close and very productive cooperation. In fact, Tchaikovsky completed the lavishly scored work within a matter of only three weeks. At the heart of the play is a popular Russian folk tale with a familiar fairytale motif: a mythical creature longs for a human soul and for the ability to feel love but is tragically destroyed by the irreconcilable differences between the human world and its mythical counterpart. Kristjan Järvi has been the principal conductor of the MDR Radio Symphony Orchestra since the 2012 season. He is a unique musical personality pushing the classical music borders with new ideas, his charisma and extraordinary technical prowess. He has been hailed by The New York Times as “a kinetic force on the podium, like Leonard Bernstein reborn.” Järvi combines his classical music origins and his love for traditional repertoire with a powerful passion for original concert programs, that catapults concert halls and audiences around the world into the 21st century. Järvi has more than 30 albums to his credit and has received various awards, including the Swedish Grammy for Best Opera Performance, the German Record Critics Prize for Best Album and is a Grammy nominee.

Ms. Meyers traveled to Finland and worked with the composer on it shortly before he died. Karol Szymanowski’s sensuous Violin Concerto No. 1, dedicated to Polish virtuoso violinist, Paul Kochanski, is a dazzling display of exotic melodies, and Ravel’s iconic Tzigane is a virtuoso showpiece that conjures Hungarian gypsy music, and premiered almost a century ago.
